Lessons on Life 生命的功課

Received this from a friend, good to remember !

Lessons on Life 生命的功課

There was a man who had four sons.
He wanted his sons to learn not to judge things too quickly.
So he sent them each on a quest, in turn,
to go and look at a pear tree that was a great distance away.

The first son went in the winter, the second in the spring,
the third in summer, and the youngest son in the fall.

When they had all gone and come back,
he called them together to describe what they had seen.
The first son said that the tree was ugly, bent, and twisted.

The second son said no it was covered with green buds
and full of promise.

The third son disagreed; he said it was laden with blossoms
that smelled so sweet and looked so beautiful,
it was the most graceful thing he had ever seen.

The last son disagreed with all of them;
he said it was ripe and drooping with fruit,
full of life and fulfillment.

The man then explained to his sons that they were all right,
because they had each seen but only one season in the tree's life.

He told them that you cannot judge a tree, or a person,
by only one season, and that the essence of who
they are and the pleasure, joy, and love that come from
that life can only be measured at the end,
when all the seasons are up.

If you give up when it's winter,
you will miss the promise of your spring,
the beauty of your summer, fulfillment of your fall.

Don't let the pain of one season destroy the joy of all the rest.

Don't judge life by one difficult season.
Persevere through the difficult patches and better times
are sure to come some time or later.

4 Tips (Trumpisms) from Donald Trump

Trumpism #1: Making It Big

“I like things big. I always have. To me, it’s very simple: if you’re going to be thinking anyway, you might as well think big.”

Trumpism #2: Accentuate the Negative

“It’s been said that I believe in the power of positive thinking. In fact, I believe in the power of negative thinking. I happen to be very conservative in business. I always go into the deal anticipating the worst. If you plan for the worst – if you can live with the worst – the good will always take care of itself.”

Trumpism #3: Hiding Your Light Under A Bushel

"You can have the most wonderful product in the world, but if people don’t know about it, it’s not going to be worth much.”

Trumpism #4: Show Me the Money

“Don’t believe the critics unless they love your work.”

Additional Service and Target Selling

Sunday morning, close to noon time, went to buy fresh pork meat in the wet market; business was slow, as a result of the spring festival holidays, there were still plenty of fresh meat over there.

To my surprise, the assistant was very nice and he offered to help me to cut the meat into small pieces, which usually he did not do this and I need to do it at home, wasting 10-15 minutes.

While I was waiting for the additional service - with his quick cutting skills,he promoted the heart of the pig for me, and he said that it tasted good, in addition, he could help me to cut it into small pieces, all I needed was to wash it and cook it freshly!

Few times, I bought what he recommended. As per his experience, he knew I would consider too.

But this time, I denied as I think I should stick with what I want, not the food that I don't want.

He could not complete the sale of the proposed item, still, I enjoyed the additional service for cutting the meat into small pieces.

Song - Heal the World

Heal The World
Michael Jackson

Think about on the generations
And say we would make better place
for children and childrens children
so that they , they,they,
they know that the world for them
think they can make better place
There's a place in your heart
And I know that it is love
And this place could be
Brighter than tomorrow
And if you really try
Youll find theres no need to cry
In this place youll feel
Theres no hurt or sorrow
There are ways to get there
If you care enough for the living
Make a little space
Make a better place ...
Heal the world
Make it a better place
For you and for me
And the entire human race
There are people dying
If you care enough for the living
Make it a better place
For you and for me
If you want to know why
Theres love that cannot lie
Love is strong
It only cares of joyful giving
If we try we shall see
In this bliss we cannot feel
Fear or dread
We stop existing and start living
The it feels that always
Loves enough for us growing
So make a better world
Make a better world...
Heal the world
Make it a better place
For you and for me
And the entire human race
There are people dying
If you care enough for the living
Make a better place for you and for me
And the dream we were conceived in
Will reveal a joyful face
And the world we once believed in
Will shine again in grace
Then why do we keep strangling life
Wound this earth, crucify its soul
Though its plain to see
This world is heavenly
Be gods glow
We could fly so high
Let our spirits never die
In my heart I feel you are all my brothers
Create a world with no fear
Together we cry happy tears
See the nations turn their swords into plowshares
We could really get there
If you cared enough for the living
Make a little space
To make a better place ...
Heal the world
Make it a better place
For you and for me
And the entire human race
There are people dying
If you care enough for the living
Make a better place for you and for me
Heal the world
Make it a better place
For you and for me
And the entire human race
There are people dying
If you care neough for the living
Make a better place for you and for me
Heal the world
Make it a better place
For you and for me
And the entire human race
There are people dying
If you care enough for the living
Make a better place for you and for me
There are people dying
If you care enough for the living
Make a better place for you and for me
There are people dying
If you care enough for the living
Make a better place for you and for me
You and for me ...
You and for me ...
You and for me ...
You and for me ...
You and for me ...

Song - Smile

Lily Allen

When you first left me
I was wanting more
But you were doing that girl next door,
what ja do that for
When you first left me
I didn’t know what to say
I never been on my own that way,
I was so lost back then
But with a little help from my friends
I found a light in the tunnel at the end
Now you’re calling me up on the phone
So you can have a little whine and a moan
And it’s only because you’re feeling alone
At first when I see you cry,
yeah it makes me smile,
yeah it makes my smile
At worst I feel bad for a while,
but then I just smile I go ahead and smile
Whenever you see me
you say that you want me back
And I tell you it don’t mean jack,
no it don’t mean jack
I couldn’t stop laughing,
no I just could help myself
See you messed up my mentalhealth
I was quite unwell
I was so lost back then
But with a little help from my friends
I found a light in the tunnel at the end
Now you’re calling me up on the phone
So you can have a little whine and a moan
And it’s only because you’re feeling alone
At first when I see you cry,
yeah it makes me smile,
yeah it makes my smile
At worst I feel bad for a while,
but then I just smile
I go ahead and smile
lalalalalalalalala……
At first when I see you cry,
yeah it makes me smile,
yeah it makes my smile
At worst I feel bad for a while,
but then I just smile
I go ahead and smile
lalalalalalalalala……
At first when I see you cry,
yeah it makes me smile,
yeah it makes my smile
At worst I feel bad for a while,
but then I just smile
I go ahead and smile

Song -

I can't give you anything but love, baby
That's the one thing I've got plenty of, baby

Happiness and I guess all those things you always pine for
Gee it's nice to see you looking swell, baby
Diamond bracelets woolworth's doesn't sell, baby
Till the lucky day you know darn well, baby
I can't give you anything but love

Song - Just when I needed you most

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PC6OJOHGmv8

Randy VanWarmer

You packed in the morning and I
Stared out the window and I
Struggled for something to say
You left in the rain
Without closing the door
I didn't stand in your way

But I miss you more than I
Missed you before and now
Where I'll find comfort, God knows
'Cause you left me
Just when I needed you most

(Left me, just when I needed you most)

Now most every morning I
Stare out the window and I
Think about where you might be
I've written you letters
That I'd like to send
If you would just send one to me

'Cause I need you more than I
Needed before and now
Where I'll find comfort, God knows
'Cause you left me
Just when I needed you most

(Left me, just when I needed you most)

[Instrumental Interlude]

You packed in the morning I
Stared out the window and I
Struggled for something to say
You left in the rain
Without closing the door
I didn't stand in your way

Now I love you more than I
Loved you before and now
Where I'll find comfort, God knows
'Cause you left me
Just when I needed you most
Oh, yeah
You left me
Just when I needed you most

You left me
Just when I needed you most

Song - Forever Love

forever love
written by gary barlow

love it has so many beautiful faces
sharing lives and sharing days
my love it has so many empty spaces
i'm sharing a memory now i hope that's how it stays

now i'm deep inside love and still breathing
she is holding my heart in her hand
i'm the closest i've been to believing this could be love forever
all throughout my life the reasons i've demanded
but how can i reason with the reason i'm a man

oh, oh yeah, ummm huh in a minute i'm needing to hold her
in an hour i'm cold, cold as stone
when she leaves it gets harder and harder to face life alone
now my dreams are filled with times when we're together
guess what i need from her is forever love

ooh, ooh yeah oooh umm oh, oh yeah
now i feel forever love oooh oh, i feel

Ming Pou - 2010.3.4

My Special CNY in the Valley of Grand Canyon

I still remember that special CNY in Grand Canyon, though the weather was very cold, by the time we hiked down the valley, it was very warm.

We stayed overnight down the Grand Canyon, we had no cook food, but it was unforgettable trip - not many people travel like this, but the budget college students.

Thanks Dr. L, and I made this wonderful trip - I would organise my thoughts to write down this one month hiking and camping trip in the South-West of United States !!!

Coming soon.

Chinese NY Dinner offered by Mrs. Hutchison

Who was Mrs. Hutchison? I received an invitation card to visit her home and had a Chinese New Year Dinner. Where was her home? How to go there?

I was puzzled by the time I checked out the card through my CPO.

Later on, through another junior Chinese student, I got the answer.

She was the previous college President 's wife - she has been living in China for sometimes and she loved to take care of students from China.

Our library is in name of her husband 's family name.

It was her tradition to invite the Chinese students for CNY dinner during their first year in Berea.

It ended up I, with the other Chinese students, visited her and her grandson Robert for a wonderful Chinese dinner, she cooked very nice food - I still remember the chicken with Chinese mushroom.

Her house was not big, but simple and elegant, she was old at that time, Robert helped her a lot, but she lived alone.

She put all the dished with the nice Chinese porcelain, it made me feel good for celebrating my first CNY in her house - appreciated a lot of her kind offers.

C's Bridal Shower

It was the spring time of my senior year, I received an invitation card from C. It was a Bridal Shower Party. C and J were going to get marry the time around our graduation day.

It was a piece of good news for me, and I was very excited for I never got the chance to experience the US style wedding, as well as the Bridal Shower Party.

After asking, I went down to Old Town Berea, to find out the gift idea, I finally bought a special pan for flying breakfast egg for them!!!!

It was good memory, to share her college romance and the preparation of her wedding.

Because my trip to SF was close to the graduation day, as well as their wedding day, I didn't officially participate the whole wedding and the reception, I did stop by to say hi and took a photo in Fireside room of Draper.

This became my memories - I am the witness of this lucky couples, I still keep in touch with C, and I hope one day, I can see their lovely daughter, not in the photo,

Wiki's definition.

A bridal shower is a gift-giving party held for a bride-to-be in anticipation of her wedding. The custom originated in the 1890s and is today most common in the United States, Canada, and by American influence, in Australia. Showers are usually coordinated by the brides family who invite guests to offer gifts for the upcoming home of the bride and groom as a married couple (or more accurately of the bride, since the groom is very seldom invited to the shower). The history of the custom is rooted not necessarily for the provision of goods for the upcoming matrimonial home, but to provided goods and financial assistance to ensure the wedding may take place.

The Joy from Geology Club Activities

I love collecting rocks, it is kind of natural materials, and from them, we can learn that there were a lot of evolutions in past.

I got the chance to join the College Geology Club, through Angela's introduction, thought I didn't take any course with Dr. L, I got the chance to meet him, and he did encourage me to join the club ( I liked to stop by his office to visit him when I was free, for I worked in the Science Building every afternoon).

There were really plenty wonderful moment with the outings and field trips - I went out a lot of carving, observing different natural rocks and stones. We went out to AK, NY, TN... Lots of good memories.

I remember one trip to Niagara Falls - it made me to meet my high school buddy. It was really mysterious to me, we didn't plan at all, and she was living in Germany at that time. That was Spring Break time, and there was a field trip to NY and Toronto with the Club.

By the time we took photo in front of the Fall in US side, a Chinese girl came forward and said "Could I join?" I was really surprised. It was her!!!! My high school buddy.

Two different people lived in different places and met in one place that nobody knew in advance of the trip.

I told my team members that my school buddy and I didn't know each of us made the trip to NY, and we did meet.

It was unbelievable thing in my life!!!

There were also plenty of things I learned from the Club - Dr. L always told me that I should trust myself, and be attention of every thing around.

It was him that I got the courage to play the game - using the rope and hike down 4 stories height and moving around inside the dirty caves, to explore different scenery.

He told me he always picked up treasuries on the floor - be attentive!

During one trip, several of us teased on him and put a coin somewhere, and tried to observe him to find out and pick it up. It was very funny, he did!!!

At the beginning, he was excited, but later on, he was a little bit mad when we told him the whole story - we did apology.

Well, all these be part of my study life.

Unforgettable Geneva

Geneva is a wonderful place, I love it very much, but I have a little bit unpleasant experience with it.

I went there twice for business trips, the first time was March - with a group of colleagues, the second time was in October, all by myself.

The first time, I fell down from the stairs, it was not a slightly accident, but I did fall down. Luckily, nobody saw me, and I helped myself out, doing things as normal.

The second time, I told myself, I should be careful again, still, unfortunately, I slipped down on the street very hard, but no people came forward to help me, even though the streets were full of people.

Nevertheless, during my last trip, on my way leaving Geneva, I met a Geneva business man who sat next to me, and we chatted a lot, at the end of the journey, he gave me a pack of chocolate.

This is my unforgettable experience in Geneva.I would love to visit again, sometime in future.

I hope next time, I can be safe!

The Joy of Spring Festival

Saturday afternoon, the weather starts to be warmer, with the sunshine, it 's the time for outdoor activity.

I passed by the Lou Lim Ieoc Garden and saw the advertising of the exhibition of Lunar New Year Traditions of Yunnan and Jiangxi Provinces, thus, entered into the Garden to take a look.

It was nice that I stopped by the exhibition, I could see some folk arts from the two Provinces. They are colorful and energetic, and I am amazed that I can be inspired by their unique and creative arts, through their costumes, dyed embroidery, musical instruments, kitchen and dinning ware, Dongba paintings, wooden sculptures, puppets, embroidery, weaved bamboo strips, costumes, instruments and paper cuttings.

Though this is only a small exhibition, it is worth to teach the younger generation to learn the Chinese cultures. The exhibition will be ended on 3 March 2010.

Tiger Woods' apology: Full transcript

Everyone of us is our own play's director and actor. We are responsible persons.

http://www.cnn.com/2010/US/02/19/tiger.woods.transcript/index.html

(CNN) -- Good morning. And thank you for joining me.

Many of you in the room are my friends. Many of you in this room know me. Many of you have cheered for me, or worked with me, or supported me, and now, every one of you has good reason to be critical of me.

I want to say to each of you, simply, and directly, I am deeply sorry for my irresponsible and selfish behavior I engaged in.

I know people want to find out how I could be so selfish and so foolish. People want to know how I could have done these things to my wife, Elin, and to my children. And while I have always tried to be a private person, there are some things I want to say.

Elin and I have started the process of discussing the damage caused by my behavior. As she pointed out to me, my real apology to her will not come in the form of words. It will come from my behavior over time. We have a lot to discuss. However, what we say to each other will remain between the two of us.

I am also aware of the pain my behavior has caused to those of you in this room. I have let you down. I have let down my fans. For many of you, especially my friends, my behavior has been a personal disappointment. To those of you who work for me, I have let you down, personally and professionally. My behavior has caused considerable worry to my business partners.

To everyone involved in my foundation, including my staff, board of directors, sponsors, and most importantly, the young students we reach, our work is more important than ever. Thirteen years ago, my dad and I envisioned helping young people achieve their dreams through education. This work remains unchanged and will continue to grow. From the Learning Center students in Southern California, to the Earl Woods Scholars in Washington, D.C., millions of kids have changed their lives, and I am dedicated to making sure that continues.

But, still, I know I have severely disappointed all of you. I have made you question who I am and how I have done the things I did. I am embarrassed that I have put you in this position. For all that I have done, I am so sorry. I have a lot to atone for.

But there is one issue I really want to discuss. Some people have speculated that Elin somehow hurt or attacked me on Thanksgiving night. It angers me that people would fabricate a story like that. She never hit me that night or any other night. There has never been an episode of domestic violence in our marriage. Ever.

Elin has shown enormous grace and poise throughout this ordeal. Elin deserves praise, not blame. The issue involved here was my repeated irresponsible behavior. I was unfaithful. I had affairs. I cheated. What I did is not acceptable. And I am the only person to blame. I stopped living by the core values that I was taught to believe in.

I knew my actions were wrong. But I convinced myself that normal rules didn't apply. I never thought about who I was hurting. Instead, I thought only about myself. I ran straight through the boundaries that a married couple should live by. I thought I could get away with whatever I wanted to. I felt that I had worked hard my entire life and deserved to enjoy all the temptations around me. I felt I was entitled. Thanks to money and fame, I didn't have far -- didn't have to go far to find them.

I was wrong. I was foolish. I don't get to play by different rules. The same boundaries that apply to everyone apply to me. I brought this shame on myself. I hurt my wife, my kids, my mother, my wife's family, my friends, my foundation, and kids all around the world who admired me.

I've had a lot of time to think about what I have done. My failures have made me look at myself in a way I never wanted to before. It is now up to me to make amends. And that starts by never repeating the mistakes I have made. It is up to me to start living a life of integrity.

I once heard -- and I believe it is true -- it's not what you achieve in life that matters, it is what you overcome. Achievements on the golf course are only part of setting an example. Character and decency are what really count. Parents used to point to me as a role model for their kids. I owe all of those families a special apology. I want to say to them that I am truly sorry.

It is hard to admit that I need help. But I do. For 45 days, from the end of December to early February, I was in inpatient therapy, receiving guidance for the issues I'm facing. I have a long way to go. But I've taken my first steps in the right direction.

As I proceed, I understand people have questions. I understand the press wants me to -- to ask me for the details of the times I was unfaithful. I understand people want to know whether Elin and I will remain together. Please know that as far as I'm concerned, every one of these questions and answers is a matter between Elin and me. These are issues between a husband and a wife.

Some people have made up things that never happened. They said I used performance-enhancing drugs. This is completely and utterly false.

Some have written things about my family. Despite the damage I have done, I still believe it is right to shield my family from the public spotlight. They did not do these things. I did. I have always tried to maintain a private space for my wife and children. They have been kept separate from my sponsors, my commercial endorsements, when my children were born, we only released photographs so they ... so that the paparazzi could not chase them.

However, my behavior doesn't make it right for the media to follow my 2½-year-old daughter to school and report the school's location. They staked out my wife and pursued my mom. Whatever my wrongdoings, for the sake of my family, please leave my wife and kids alone.

I recognize I have brought this on myself. And I know above all I am the one who needs to change. I owe it to my family to become a better person. I owe it to those closest to me to become a better man. That is where my focus will be. I have a lot of work to do. And I intend to dedicate myself to doing it.

Part of following this path for me is Buddhism, which my mother taught me at a young age. People probably don't realize it, but I was raised a Buddhist, and I actively practiced my faith from childhood until I drifted away from it in recent years. Buddhism teaches that a craving for things outside ourselves causes an unhappy and pointless search for security. It teaches me to stop following every impulse and to learn restraint. Obviously, I lost track of what I was taught.

As I move forward, I will continue to receive help because I have learned that is how people really do change. Starting tomorrow, I will leave for more treatment and more therapy.

I would like to thank my friends at Accenture and the players in the field this week for understanding why I am making this -- these remarks today. In therapy, I have learned that looking at -- the importance of looking at my spiritual life and keeping in balance with my professional life. I need to regain my balance and be centered so I can save the things that are most important to me: my marriage and my children.

That also means relying on others for help. I have learned to seek support from my peers in therapy, and I hope someday to return that support to others who are seeking help.

I do plan to return to golf one day. I just don't know when that day will be. I don't rule out that it will be this year. When I do return, I need to make my behavior more respectful of the game.

In recent weeks, I have received many thousands of e-mails, letters and phone calls from people expressing good wishes. To everyone who has reached out to me and my family, thank you. Your encouragement means the world to Elin and me. I want to thank the PGA Tour, Commissioner [Tim] Finchem and the players for their patience and understanding while I work on my private life. I look forward to seeing my fellow players on the course.

Finally, there are many people in this room and there are many people at home who believed in me. Today, I want to ask for your help. I ask you to find room in your hearts to one day believe in me again. Thank you.

Lift in Public Facility

In a public facility, I was in a hurry, I pressed the button up and waited, once the lift opened, I immediately entered, but not the other people who had also been waiting.

When I was in the lift, looking outside, a little boy looked at me curiously.

Then the lift closed, I was sent to the basement.

That means the lift was going down, I understand why the boy was puzzled.

Few seconds later, the lift stopped again on the ground floor, and some other people came in, including the little boy.

I needed to go up, but I wasted the time (not me, I believe all the people waiting to go up too) went downstairs instead - obviously, that was not I wanted - I didn't realise that the lift was operating a task which didn't make sense at all. Only the up button was pressed, and the lift was going down, it still wasted the time to open the lift by the way going down.

From this little story, I think facility controllers did not use the heart to work, nor they did not use the view point of the passengers - save time - as they didn't make the lift intelligent enough to suit the needs of the people.

Most of the lifts can check the signals- either up or down, by the way they go to the direction up, if the signal up is pressed on certain floors, the lift should stop on that floor on the way up, to pick up the passengers.

If the signal of down is received, but the lift is going up, it should not stop on the floor, by doing so, it can save the time of operation, and the time of the people waiting for the lift.

This is only minor thing, but I think by improving minor things, our life can be better!!

Song -

Ted Lo

REPEAT*

Song -

REPEAT *

One of my favorite Economist!!!

I want to acknowledge so many people that made Erin Brockovich. But let me make my dress pretty. Universal, everybody at Universal, Kevin Mischer and Stacey Snider and Stacey Sher and I can't believe I'm remembering everybody's name. Jersey Films, Danny Devito, and everybody over there. Everyone I've ever met in my life.
But let me make my dress pretty一句,令謝辭顯得格外自然。

Chief Justice Rehnquist, President Carter, President Bush, President Clinton, distinguished guests and my fellow citizens, the peaceful transfer of authority is rare in history, yet common in our country. With a simple oath, we affirm old traditions and make new beginnings. As I began, I thank President Clinton for his service to our nation. And I thank Vice President Gore for a contest conducted with spirit and ended with grace.

Following information is from Ming Pou, good suggestion for planning !!!!

2005.3.3

這次課程包括三道菜式﹕Creme de Courgette et Roquette(凍湯)、Sauce Pistache(阿月渾子醬汁)和Fondant au Chocolat(朱古力軟心蛋糕)。

A letter to HK - from Choy So Yuk

Dear Hong Kong,

Hong Kong is really a land of many wonders, a place of endless surprises at the most unexpected moment.

I am talking about the leave of former, yes, "former" by now, Chief Executive Mr CH Tung, and the elevation of Mr Donald Tsang, our new leader at the Executive Branch.

These fast-break changes came at the most unexpected moment when Mr Tung seemed to be riding over the tough tides, heading for a soft sailing after the economy has been obviously bottoming out.

Probably, the Central Government was impressed by the results of the Legislative Council elections last year, which showed that Hong Kong people as a whole are rational and considerate. So, there is no much need in erecting unsurmountable barriers between different political camps with different political history.

Time and again, the Central leadership has been calling on all forces in Hong Kong to forget and forgive past differences, and build a better Hong Kong.

I sincerely hope that our friends at the Democratic Camp will heed the earnest appeal of the Central Government, tear down the barriers and come forward to co-operate with the Central Government and the new SAR administration.

Dear Hong Kong, let us kick off a virtuous cycle. All are welcome! Hong Kong belongs to us all, we are all in the same family, we are all in the same boat. We should not separate us apart from each other.

Donald has been generally ruled out for the top job by many well-informed and well-connected quarters. Certainly, he was always a contender, but was viewed mostly as an also-run included for the sake of comprehensiveness of the list. By virtue of the incumbency position, his only real chance was in case of dire emergency. Surely Hong Kong was in no emergency. In fact, we are returning to normalcy in all fronts, and as a whole.

On the eve of Hong Kong returning to China on 30 June 1997, Donald was knighted by Prince Charles while Mrs. Anson Chan remains a common. It appeared to the general public that Mrs Anson Chan was waiting for her turn to the top while donald realistically counted himself out.

Paradoxes are the order of the day. Exactly because he is ruled out by the public, even by himself that he is picked. Those who were aiming at it with all their minds and hearts, exactly because of their tenacious efforts, were dropped.

After the mass demonstrations in July 1 in 2003 and 2004, Beijing appeared to have completed a comprehensive plan for Hong Kong --accelerating integration with China in all material and spiritual fronts.

Donald Tsang knows the Hong Kong Establishment and government machinery inside out. That is a tremendous help, could even be an indispensable part, to China's new plan for Hong Kong.

In view of this new think, the world has been turned upside down. China forgive and forget. All things seem to be re-defined, re-configurated and re-orientated in the new context of total integration between Hong Kong and the Mainland.

This could be a political landscape shift, of the scale and magnitude of a continental shift, reminiscent of China's Open and Reform Policy in the late 70's.

Previously impossibilities become new possibilities, even necessities; normalcy and abnormalcy were reversed; assets liabilities, and liabilities assets.

In time of landscape shift, Paradoxes reign supreme.

China appears to be departing from China's entrenched position based on ideology of nationalism. Now Effectuality of Governance and economic recovery seem to take precedence over ideology of nationalism and become the core value overriding other concerns.

Loyalty and deference are secondary to competence and performance. After all, Hong Kong is all under control. Loyalty and deference are non-issues, the real issues are competence and performance.

A Hong Kong after 155 years of British rule has become a full-fledged quasi-modern society with world-class cosmopolitan attributes. China may now view Hong Kong as a turn-key project and Donald Tsang and experienced operator and repairer.

Over the decades, China's economic reforms and modernization were guided by a Deng saying- "Be it white cat or black cat, a cat that catches mice is a good cat".

Now, China may be inadvertently taking a page from Deng's pragmatism --"Be it British or Chinese, as far as it works."

Since the new leadership of Hu Jiangtao and Wan Jiaobao took over, China's concept and practice of governance seem to be taking up a CEO Model which will better serve China in shifting to international and internal political contexts as she is playing a greater role in the modern world.

If China's rethink on Hong Kong was completed one year later, Arthur Li even York Chow might have a better chance of replacing CH Tung, given Arthur's and York's need for time to shape up their competence and performance in leadership. If CH Tung stepped down one year earlier, Henry Tang might get the top job.

Donald Tsang's supreme good luck guides him through impossibilities, against all odds. China's rethink on Hong Kong was completed not one year earlier, nor one year later. Paradoxes occur in perfect timing for him.

However, the political reality now does not necessarily mean sure win for Donald Tsang.

Over the decades, Donald was a staunch supporter of the British rule. It is not a matter of policy only, but a matter of personal style and relations. There seems a cultural gap and emotional distance lying between him and the patriotic forces. While policies and official matters could more easily be forgotten and forgiven, personal style and relations, culture and emotions are not. He was viewed by some in the Pro-Beijing camp as arrogant and disrespecting of the patriotic values they cherished and treasured over the decades, and paid dear prices for. His elevation alienated quite a few in this camp.

It is generally held that he enjoys a cultural intimacy with the democratic camp. It is uncertain how much that intimacy, can turn into political support and votes in the Legislative Council.

What is apparent is that the Central Government and both opposite camps in Hong Kong would have different, diagonally opposite expectations of him, and he must deliver.

Chances are that he cannot please all in one stroke. When that situation arises, different camps might join forces against him.

His biggest challenge lies in his rethink on his past 40 years of experience in the government, to see firstly what are the quality differences between the new post and his previous postings, and secondly what are the personal instincts and reflexes that are indispensable and must be kept in the new post, and equally important, if not more important, what must be changed and discarded.

Donald the new Chief Executive faces challenges probably still unknown to him, and us, now. In view of the socio-political landscape changes taking place, we at DAB might also face with new challenges now still unknown to us, too.

Wisdom from a Fruit Vendor

Went to the wet market to buy food this morning.

Saw one of the vendors tried to identify the less quality oranges and separated them from the same box. Obviously, she tried to distinguish the oranges into two types.

For me, all the oranges are in same price, as they came from the same wholesale and in the same box.

This vendor tried to charge higher price for the good quality oranges, the premium may be a compensation to cover the other oranges which turned bad before going to the customers.

Suddenly, I remember the practice of other fruit vendor, I used to buy from him in the early morning.

I realise that he has his wisdom in doing his business.

Early in the morning, at around 8AM, there are plenty of oranges, at this time, the price is the most expensive during the day. Many people would choose and buy the best ones.

By doing so, the vendor needs not to divide the oranges into categories. The customers have already done so!

As time passes, at 10 or 11 AM, he starts to lower the price a little bit, e.g., instead of MOP10 for 4 pieces, he would change the price to MOP11 for 5 pieces.

For sure, after the selection of the previous customers, the oranges in the boxes may be smaller or the outlook may not be as good as the sold ones.

Until noon, he would group the oranges - no matter how they are in bad shape or less attractive, each group may be MOP10 for 5 pieces.

He would sometimes said that I only got the cost, as I earned from the early morning.

Every hour, he is trying to monitor his products, by adjusting the prices, he can finish his work by noon time. He needs not to worry about the stock over night, and he can guarantee the freshness fruit every morning.

As he has been selling for long time, he has plenty of customers, and all the customers know well that his price is fixed in certain hour, no negotiation at all, but one can choose the time to buy, according to the quality of the fruit and the price!!
