Randy Lai - vice-president of McDonald's Restaurants (Hong Kong) Finding the essence of service

John Cremer
http://www.classifiedpost.com/career-centre/leadership-lessons/working-women/finding-essence-service

Moving from a high-powered marketing role to cleaning tables and mopping floors might seem a backward step to most people, but to Randy Lai, it seemed like a smart move. Having worked her way up to the rank of vice-president of McDonald's Restaurants (Hong Kong), she was aware that, compared with other senior colleagues, her resume lacked a crucial element: frontline operational experience.

Billionaires’ Top 10 List for Success | The Big Picture

The Wealth Report: Here is the top 10 list culled from billionaires:
1. Figure out what you’re so passionate about that you’d be happy doing it for 10 years, even if you never made any money from it. That’s what you should be doing
2. Always be true to yourself
3. Figure out what your values are and live by them, in business and in life.

4. Rather than focus on work-life separation, focus on work-life integration.

5. Don’t network. Focus on building real relationships and friendships where the relationship itself is its own reward, instead of trying to get something out of the relationship to benefit your business or yourself.

6. Remember to maximize for happiness, not money or status.

7. Get ready for rejection.

8. Success unshared is failure. Give back — share your wealth.
9. (A secret so powerful, we simply cannot tell you)

10. Successful people do all the things unsuccessful people don’t want to do.

Movie - My Blueberry Nights

A young woman takes a soul-searching journey across America to resolve her questions about love while encountering a series of offbeat characters along the way.

Christmas is coming!

This morning,
few minutes before 9AM,
on my way to work,
passed by the Main Post Office in San Ma Lou,
I saw a long queue with about 10 persons waiting for the opening of the gate,
it reminded me that...................
Christmas is coming,
people would like to go to Post Office to send cards/gifts to their love ones!!

Kaiseki Cuisine

Kaiseki 懷石料理- New Furusato

Approaching to the end of the year, E suggested that we should have a luxury dinner in New Furusato – a very fine Japanese Restaurant in Hotel Lisboa.
He said that Kaiseki is a good choice, as I haven't tried Kaiseki before and am curious of what it is, I checked out over Internet, it seems that I saw the information in TV long time ago, the food is very nice present, but in a very tiny portion, and there are a lot of dishes.

He has my vote, no matter the price is, it is a reward to myself,  but am thinking that the portion is too small for me – for I am a big eater.

Happy Shopping

After Yam Cha today,
I walked slowly along the Central Market area,
this is the place that I pass by almost every day ,
however, as it is holiday,
I started to realise that there are plenty of things to shop in this area.

As I need to buy things for myself,
I started to enjoy the shopping around in this area,
and I discovered I myself  - were among the tourists in this shopping area,
two places I shopped,
one shopper was an Indian,
the other place - the customer was a HK visitor,
I started to think -
Where do the Macau People shop??

Inside the Chinese Restaurant

As usual,
have Sunday morning tea with my family.

I always find out there are a lot of interesting things inside the Chinese Restaurant.
Besides enjoying the Dim Sum,
there are a lot of chatting topics there among the customers that I can listen,
and I can also observe a lot of interesting activities,
as how the waiters/waitress work,
how they please certain old customers,
how they treat some unknown customers.

It is very natural,
it is kind of human beings behaviour,
in such a crowded place.

Last week, when I was in TTK,
I saw one lady who needed not to wait for the table,
but when she arrived,
all the waitresses greeted her and spent a lot of time talking with her,
asking what she wanted.....

I remember this,
as today,
I am in CTU,
and I saw the similar picture,
and at the same time,
I also saw the lady gave 20 patacas to the manager when she arrived the table .

For the same waitress,
one could spend a lot of time chatting with the old lady,
but she could have another face to the other customer -
she blamed a man for he didn't order the food at one time.

From the Chinese restaurant,
one can always observe the personality of different people!

Hongkong Hiker - Dragon's Back

Song - Take me to your heart

Hiding from the rain and snow
Trying to forget but I won't let go
Looking at a crowded street
Listening to my own heart beat
So many people all around the world
Tell me where do I find someone like you gir
Take me to your heart
Take me to your soul
Give me your hand before I'm old
Show me what love is
Haven't got a clue
Show me that wonders can be true
They say nothing lasts forever
We're only here today
Love is now or never
Bring me far away
Take me to your heart
Take me to your soul
Give me your hand and hold me
Show me what love is
Be my guiding star
It's easy
Take me to your heart
...
Standing on a mountain high
Looking at the moon through a clear blue sky
I should go and see some friends
But they don't really comprehend
Don't need too much talking
Without saying anything
All I need is someone
Who makes me want to sing
Take me to your heart
Take me to your soul
Give me your hand before I'm old
Show me what love is
Haven't got a clue
Show me that wonders can be true
They say nothing lasts forever
We're only here today
Love is now or never
Bring me far away
Take me to your heart
Take me to your soul
Give me your hand and hold me
Show me what love is
Be my guiding star
It's easy
Take me to your heart
Take me to your heart
Take me to your soul
Give me your hand and hold me
Show me what love is
Be my guiding star
It's easy
Take me to your heart

Black Friday Sale

Black Friday is the day following Thanksgiving Day in the United States, traditionally the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. On this day, most major retailers open extremely early, often at 4 a.m., or earlier, and offer promotional sales to kick off the shopping season, similar to Boxing Day sales in many Commonwealth Nations. Black Friday is not actually a holiday, but many non-retail employers give their employees the day off, increasing the number of potential shoppers. It has routinely been the busiest shopping day of the year since 2005, although news reports, which at that time were inaccurate, have described it as the busiest shopping day of the year for a much longer period of time.

The day's name originated in Philadelphia, where it originally was used to describe the heavy and disruptive pedestrian and vehicle traffic which would occur on the day after Thanksgiving. Use of the term started before 1966 and began to see broader use outside Philadelphia around 1975. Later an alternative explanation began to be offered: that "Black Friday" indicates the point at which retailers begin to turn a profit, or are "in the black".

For many years, it was common for retailers to open at 6:00, but in the late 2000s, many had crept to 5:00 or even 4:00. This was taken to a new extreme in 2011, when several retailers (including Target, Kohls, Macy's, Best Buy, and Bealls) opened at midnight for the first time. An online petition with more than 200,000 virtual signatures is aimed at asking Target not to open so early. Walmart opened at 10:00 pm on Thanksgiving and Toys 'R' Us at 9:00 pm. In 2010, Sears was open on Thanksgiving day.

I miss the Black Friday Sale, as well as the Boxing Day Sale, because shopping is fun!

Song - Beautiful in White

Movie - The King's Speech

Wedding Readings from the Bible

Corinthians 13

If I speak in the tongues of men and angels,
but have not love,
I have become sounding brass or a tinkling symbol.

And if I have prophecy and know all mysteries and all knowledge,
and if I have all faith so as to remove mountains,
but have not love, I am nothing.

And if I dole out all my goods, and
if I deliver my body that I may boast
but have not love, nothing I am profited.

Love is long suffering,
love is kind,
it is not jealous,
love does not boast,
it is not inflated.

It is not discourteous,
it is not selfish,
it is not irritable,
it does not enumerate the evil.
It does not rejoice over the wrong, but rejoices in the truth

It covers all things,
it has faith for all things,
it hopes in all things,
it endures in all things.

Love never falls in ruins;
but whether prophecies, they will be abolished; or
tongues, they will cease; or
knowledge, it will be superseded.
For we know in part and we prophecy in part.
But when the perfect comes, the imperfect will be superseded.

When I was an infant,
I spoke as an infant,
I reckoned as an infant;
when I became an adult,
I abolished the things of the infant.

For now we see through a mirror in an enigma, but then face to face.
Now I know in part, but then I shall know as also I was fully known.
But now remains
faith, hope, love,
these three;
but the greatest of these is love.

Poem - Eskimo Love Song

You are my husband, you are my wife
My feet shall run because of you
My feet dance because of you
My heart shall beat because of you
My eyes see because of you
My mind thinks because of you
And I shall love, because of you.

For Everything There is a Season

For everything there is a season
And a time for every matter under heaven:
A time to be born, and a time to die;
A time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;
A time to kill, and a time to heal;
A time to break down, and a time to build up;
A time to weep, and a time to laugh;
A time to mourn, and a time to dance;
A time to throw away stones, and a time to gather stones together;
A time to embrace, And a time to refrain from embracing;
A time to seek, and a time to lose;
A time to keep, and a time to throw away;
A time to tear, and a time to sew;
A time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
A time to love, and a time to hate,
A time for war, and a time for peace.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

Poem - BURY MY BODY but don't bury my beliefs

A time will come when my life will cease. But when that time comes, I ask that you remember these things:

BURY MY BODY but don't bury my beliefs
BURY MY HEART but don't bury my love
BURY MY EYES but not my vision
BURY MY FEET but not the path of my life
BURY MY HANDS but don't bury my diligent efforts
BURY MY SHOULDERS but not the concerns I carried
BURY MY VOICE but not my message
BURY MY MIND but don't bury my dreams
BURY ME but don't bury my life.

IF YOU MUST BURY SOMETHING, LET IT BE MY FAULTS AND MY WEAKNESSES. BUT LET MY LIFE CONTINUE ON IN YOU.

Randall Rohr

Poem - Remember Me

To the living, I am gone,
To the sorrowful, I will never return,
To the angry, I was cheated,
But to the happy, I am at peace,
And to the faithful, I have never left.

I cannot speak, but I can listen.
I cannot be seen, but I can be heard.
So as you stand upon a shore gazing at a beautiful sea-
As you look upon a flower and admire its simplicity-
Remember me.

Remember me in your heart:
Your thoughts, and your memories,
Of the times we loved,
The times we cried,
The times we fought,
The times we laughed.
For if you always think of me, I will never have gone.

(Unknown)

Poem - Love

Love means to learn to look at yourself
The way one looks at distant things
For you are only one thing among many.
And whoever sees that way heals his heart,
Without knowing it, from various ills
A bird and a tree say to him: Friend.
Then he wants to use himself and things
So that they stand in the glow of ripeness.
It doesnt matter whether he knows what he serves:
Who serves best doesn't always understand.

Czeslaw Milosz

Poem - To Those Whom I love & Those Who Love Me

When I am gone, release me, let me go.
I have so many things to see and do,
You mustn't tie yourself to me with too many tears,
But be thankful we had so many good years.

I gave you my love, and you can only guess
How much you've given me in happiness.
I thank you for the love that you have shown,
But now it is time I traveled on alone.

So grieve for me a while, if grieve you must,
Then let your grief be comforted by trust.
It is only for a while that we must part,
So treasure the memories within your heart.

I won't be far away for life goes on.
And if you need me, call and I will come.

Though you can't see or touch me, I will be near.
And if you listen with your heart, you'll hear,
All my love around you soft and clear.

And then, when you come this way alone,
I'll greet you with a smile and a 'Welcome Home'.

Anon.

Poem - Remember

Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go, yet turning stay.
Remember me when no more day by day
You tell me of our future that you plann'd:
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.
Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad.

Lunch at Macau Macanese Association

Have lunch with my colleagues at Macau Macanese Assoication today,
I ate there several times before as my ex-colleague was the member,
but not these 2 years.
In the canteen,
I also met several old friends and the cook too!!

The place is a little bit crowded,
and today the menu included:
shrimps with Salad, lamb, and Portuguese stew - with vegetables,
the food is so so,
but I like the desserts -
for desserts - I ate mango pudding, chocolate cake and cafe cake,
with a lot of fresh fruit......

For non-member,
the lunch is MOP75 per person for Friday,
and there are plenty of food-
overall it is a nice lunch -
for meeting friends!

Appalachian Spring - Aaron Copland LIVE

This is one of my favorite music.
When I was studying in Berea,
I learned this master piece in one music course,
and I loved it  immediately!

That bit from 4:46 to 5:20 is probably the most beautiful,
probably I related myself living in such a beautiful and quiet campus,
which is located in the Appalachian area,
and I liked the Spring time there.

The Appalachian Spring is really very special to me !

Cow boy / Cow man/ Ghost

Today,my Portuguese colleague asked us -
what were the meaning of  "cow boy/cow man" 牛仔/牛佬,
and what was the difference.

At the beginning,
we were very surprised,
for a Portuguese who didn't speak Chinese,
he was interested of these two terms.

After the explanation,
he explained that outside the office,
for many times,
he heard the people called him "cow man" !
He caught the pronunciation,
and was curious about the exact meaning.

Yes,
it reminded me that in the old time,
we, the Chinese called the western people as cow boy,
and also -
ghost 鬼佬,
for they look very different with our Chinese.

Got this information from wiki:

Shop Opening Sale

Passed by the Market Street
wanted to buy some almond nuts,
thus stopped by the stop to buy some....
by the time,
two visitors were attracted by the big price list of the groceries,
one asked the assistant,
really so cheap?
what did the 開倉價 mean?
The assistant esplained that it was the shop opening sale pice,
but the poster was three years' ago when the shop opened!

As I have finished my shopping,
I left,
but I started to think,
Is there any business ethics?

I would rather not to be a tourist in a new place/

Clube Militar

Buffet lunch at Clube Militar,
today the main courses are duck rice and baked bacalha,
with appetizer - onion soup, salad and ham,
and various kinds of desserts.

A little bit disappointed of the food today,
can't say what 's wrong with the duck rice,
but it is not as tasty as our previous meals,
the bacalha is like pudding with a lot of milk,
for the dessert,
can't get the types I want....
though I don't drink coffee,
my colleagues tell me that the coffee is warm coffee.

After the lunch,
H told us that the restaurant has changed a new chef,
so,
:(
that means....
they have the margin for improvement!!

New cash handout for 2012

From Macau Business:

The government will keep the cash handout in 2012, chief executive Fernando Chui Sai On announced yesterday during his first day delivering next year’s policy address at the Legislative Assembly.

A poem written by a teenager with cancer.

SLOW DANCE

Have you ever watched kids

On a merry-go-round?

Or listened to the rain
Slapping on the ground?

Ever followed a
butterfly's erratic flight?

Or gazed at the sun into the
fading night?

You better slow down.

Don't dance so fast.

Time is short.

The music won't last.

Do you run through each day

On the fly?

When you ask

How are you?

Do you hear the reply?

When the day is done

Do you lie in your bed

With the next hundred chores

Running through your head?

You'd better slow down

Don't dance so fast.

Time is short.

The music won't last.

Ever told your child,

We'll do it  tomorrow?

And in your haste,

Not see his sorrow?

Ever lost touch,

Let a good friendship die

Cause you never had time

To call and say,'Hi'

You'd better slow down.

Don't dance so fast.

Time is short.

The music won't last..

When you run
so fast to get somewhere

You
miss half the fun of getting
there.

When you worry and hurry
through your day,

It is like an unopened gift....

Thrown away.

Life is not a race.

Do take it slower

Hear the music

Before the song is
over.

Song - Because I Love You

Song - Dog and Butterfly (Heart)

There I was with the old man
Stranded again so off I'd ran
A young world crashing around me
No possibilities of getting what I need
He looked at me and smiled
Said "No, no, no, no, no child.

See the dog and butterfly. Up in the
Air he like to fly." Dog and butterfly
Below she had to try. She roll back down
To the warm soft ground laughing
She don't know why, she don't know why
Dog and butterfly

Well I stumbled upon your secret place
Safe in the trees you had tears on your face
Wrestling with your desires frozen strangers
Stealing your fires. The message hit my mind
Only words that I could find
See the dog and butterfly
Up in the air he like to fly
Dog and butterfly below she had to try
She roll back down to the warm soft ground
Laughing to the sky, up to the sky
Dog and butterfly

We're getting older the world's getting colder
For the life of me I don't know the reason why
Maybe it's livin' making us give in
Hearts rolling in taken back on the tide
We're balanced together ocean upon the sky

Another night in this strange town
Moonlight holding me light as down
Voice of confusion inside of me
No begging to go back where I'm free
Feels like I'm through
Then the old man's words are true
See the dog and butterfly
Up in the air he like to fly
Dog and butterfly, below she had to try
She roll back down to the warm soft
Ground with a little tear in her eye
She had to try, she had to try
Dog and butterfly

Song -

repeat * - *
