Wheat
3 June 3 2005, Friday
After breakfast, we go to co-opt, Liu and Wu discussed the arrangement for library, after that, we go to the school.
However, we notice that the school has announced that school holiday starts today, and two teachers also help to clean up one room which is for setting up the library. While at the same time, we can see students moving their desks and chairs out of the school. It is very interesting, I never saw it before. I ask some students, they say that students need to bring their own desks and chairs to school, while some are going to take the class during holiday, they need not to move the desks and chairs home ( obviously, these are their properties!!!)
Most of the desks and chairs were made by farmers themselves, and usually some students may borrow the desks/chairs from their relatives. With the names on the chairs/desks, all of them were in bad condition.
As the literature teacher, Mr. Chiu suggests us we should go to Kai Feng to shop for books for the library, he can bring us to do the shopping on Sunday. We are quite happy with the suggestion. At the same time, Wu notices that Mr. Chiu is going to collect wheat this afternoon, she offers help as we may occupy his working time for farming on Sunday.
As a result, in the afternoon, after lunch, we make ourselves dressed comfortable and prepare to work under the sun, we also put sun-protection lotion. However, when we check the location with Mrs. C, she is quite surprised that we should not go, as it is very far away, it will take about 2 KM, and close to the highway area. We thank for her kindness, and we decide to go as we have promised.
Along the road, there are plenty of wheat fields, farmers are in busy working, and the collected wheat are everywhere, including the road.
It is a hot afternoon, we drink a lot of water, and we can see beautiful village scenery's, we sing, we talk and we also take pictures, we can also see one new building – a primary school, but don’t know when it will be used.
It has been after a while, we arrive the field of Mr. Chiu.
Mr Chiu teaches us how to use the wheat knife, and we take turn to cut the wheat grass, we also take pictures of collecting the wheat. it is not easy, but the earnings are quite limited.
Not to mentioned our team members, who are familiar with the farm work, they also said that the work is hard.
We can see Mr. Chiu works very fast, however, all of us give up very soon, we apologize that we can’t help much, and after an hour, we leave the field for home.
The walk for returning home is easier, as the sun is going down, and we also buy ice-bar, which is very common here, the prices are range from 20 cents to 50 cents, we can also see the kids eat ice-bar very often.
At the same time, the air around the field (near the high-way) is not good, it is polluted, they explain that it is the by-products of using the old machines to collect wheat, while the air of the area far away from the high-way is much better.
At night, I prepare for tomorrow ‘s lesson plan.
