2005 Dream Vacation Journal - 7

Dream Project
Wheat Holiday Class - Lesson one
June 4 2005, Saturday

Today is Saturday, but according to our plan, our wheat holiday dream school starts.

The first lesson is at 8:20, we have breakfast, then we head for the school. It takes about 3 minutes’ walk from Mr. Cheong ‘s house to the primary school.

I have the 3 and 4 grade kids, however, for those who had signed up, most didn’t shown up, but many came with no registration. I talk with them, and the 3rd grade kids tell me they don’t know anything about English, except alphabet, the girls are very quiet while the boys are very naughty.

They tell me they have English books, but as there is no teacher for English lessons in the school, they have no chance to learn the language.

After that, we have Chinese writing, and music lesson. In the afternoon, we have English again, but this time, we plan to have drilled session, so that the kids have more chance to talk. For the high school kids, we also find out that their standard is very low, some even stay in the basic level.

At night time, we have an interview of R. He comes over to co-opt to see us, we make the interview while the guys give the computer lessons.

Sad stories are alike. He is a Junior 2 students, his father passed away, and his mother re-married and lived in the east northern region, he lives with his uncle, who has eye-sighted problem and also a little bit mentally retarded.

He himself also has heart-diseased problem, and stayed home for one semester. He is very quiet, and a little bit shy, he goes to school but also has to take care of the land of the family; as a result, he is very busy.

He is recommended by Mr. Cheong for the financial aid, and later on he also submits a letter explaining why he needs for the money.

In conclusion, of the first day of our official lesson, it is a very long day, we are very busy, the standard of the children is low, we need to do some more work, but we are curious why the standard is low.

I chat with VP, he explains to me that this is a big China problem, it is a normal problem in the rural area, such as the standard of the teacher is low, teacher to student ratio is high, and it is difficult to take care of all the students at the same time, besides, in villages, the people has dialects, thus making the pronunciation different. However, we do wish there are some good English teacher to raise the level of English of the kids.

Today, stop by Wu’s writing classes, and listen her lesson.

I quite agree with her - writing is an expression of feeling and thoughts, right, I should keep myself involve of writing, so that I can think, and express myself more. 
