À Minha Esposa

黔婁是安守清貧的高士,因妻子賢淑,便不覺度日艱苦;

陶淵明不擅謀求生計,翟氏便親自拾柴炊爨,操持家務;

你的家族留有祖訓,要將清白白淨的家風傳給後代;

To My Wife

Bai Juyi (Tang Dynasty)

Alive, as kin beneath one roof we dwell;

dead, one dust‑grave shall our bodies swell.

Even strangers give each other kindly cheer,

how much more, then, my dearest, you and my dear!

Qianlou bore hardship with unbowed mind,

his virtuous spouse made poverty kind.

Ji Que, a farmer, tilled the earth’s brown loam,

his wife received him as an honoured guest at home.

Tao Qian sought no wealth, no worldly gain to seize,

his Zhai lit fires and gathered fuel with ease.

Liang Hong spurned all official rank and fame,

Meng Guang wore homespun without a shade of shame.

Though learned volumes never met your eye,

these old‑time tales have passed your ear by.

A thousand years from now, what shall men say

of us, when our brief lives have slipped away?

While breath remains, let us our souls attend.

Our wants are simple: warmth, and bread to mend.

Plain herbs may stay the hunger’s sharp demand,

why crave rich feasts of dainty meat and brand?

Thick‑woven cloth may turn the winter’s blast,

why yearn for silks with embroidered cast?

Your house bequeaths one precept, pure and bright:

leave to your heirs an unsoiled, honest light.

I too am one who loves the steadfast way,

and but lately with your hand did mine array.

May we keep plainness, through our days endure,

and grow old side‑by‑side, with spirits glad and pure.

Vivos, habitamos a mesma casa como parentes;

e envelheçamos lado a lado, com almas alegres e serenas.

yet to my spouse my life and death are planned.

Song of Changgan

English

Song of Changgan

Li Bai (Tang Dynasty)

When my hair first draped my forehead,

I plucked blossoms and played before the gate.

You came riding your bamboo‑horse,

round the well‑sill chased green plums in state.

We dwelt in Changgan Lane,

two small hearts, no shadow of doubt remained.

At fourteen I became your wife,

so bashful my face never dared to shine.

I bowed my head toward the shadowed wall;

called a thousand times, I would not turn one sign.

At fifteen my brows at last unbent,

I wished with you to share both dust and ash, content.

I kept the faith of the man who clung to the pillar,

never would I climb the Hill of the Waiting‑Wife.

At sixteen you journeyed far away,

past Yanyu Rock in Qutang Gorge, strife‑rife.

In the fifth moon the reef must not be touched,

apes wail high in heaven, their sorrow much.

Before the gate, your old footprints I trace,

each one now over‑grown with moss’s green veil.

The moss lies deep, not to be swept away,

autumn winds bring fallen leaves too soon to avail.

Eighth moon brings yellow butterflies,

in pairs o’er west‑garden grass they rise.

This sight wounds my heart with pain,

I grieve, while my bright youth fades in vain.

When you descend from Sanba, come what may,

send a letter home before you start your way.

To meet you I shall not grudge the miles I roam,

even to Changfengsha I will journey home.

Canção de Changgan

Li Bai (Dinastia Tang)

Quando o meu cabelo mal cobria a minha testa,

colhia flores e brincava diante do portão.

Tu vinhas montado no teu cavalo de bambu,

à volta da borda do poço perseguias ameixas verdes.

Vivíamos ambos na rua de Changgan,

dois pequenos corações, sem sombra de desconfiança.

Aos catorze anos tornei‑me tua esposa,

Inclinava a cabeça para a parede sombria;

Three Qingping‑tiao Odes

Li Bai (Tang Dynasty)

Clouds remind me of her silken gown, blooms of her face,

spring wind brushes railings, rich with dewy grace.

Were she not seen upon the Jade‑Cluster height,

one would meet her on Jasper Terrace, bathed in moonlight.

One crimson blossom holds dew and fragrant glow;

old tales of Wushan’s cloud‑rain grieve in vain, I know.

Who of Han’s palace ladies could her equal be?

Only Fei‑Yan, adorned with fresh‑wrought vanity.

The peerless flower and realm‑stirring beauty bring delight,

long may the sovereign watch them with eyes alight.

All boundless sorrows born of spring‑wind fade away;

north of Aloeswood Pavilion, she leans on the balustrade.

Um ramo de flor carmesim guarda o brilho do orvalho e um aroma suave;

Todas as mágoas sem fim trazidas pelo vento da primavera se desvanecem;

克制欲望、多聽勸諫,勿急於求成。王朝興亡的關鍵原因:暴君亡國、仁君興邦、藩鎮割據、宦官亂政、外戚專權;

• 用人之道:明君如何辨識忠奸、賢臣輔佐、小人禍國的完整案例;

• 制度與民生:賦稅、兵制、法制改革對百姓與國家的影響;

• 個人修身:君臣、將相的得失抉擇,驕傲、猜忌、縱欲帶來的毀滅;

• 管理者、創業者、企業負責人:借鑒用人、權衡、風險把控邏輯;

• 愛好歷史、想看懂社會運行規律的讀者;

• 希望修煉心性、學習冷靜決策、看懂人性的成年人;

1. 原文為文言文,純原文閱讀難度高,初學者建議搭配白話譯本;

2. 時間線冗長,戰爭、官場細節繁多,節奏偏厚重,不喜歡厚重歷史書籍的人容易讀不下去;

When will heat and cold’s long round be o’er?

Time drifts away like water’s stream.

My life and floating‑clouds both soar,

why chase vain things beyond my dream?

The moon on high, the tower by the tide,

let one good drink reward this hour.

Joyless, carefree, my spirit shall abide,

may my life know but freedom’s power.

《心》(Kokoro)

(Kokoro)

(Natsume Sōseki)

Kokoro (The Heart)

by Natsume Sōseki

Short Book Review (English)

Kokoro is a quiet yet piercing study of human nature. Haunted by a selfish choice that drove his dear friend to suicide, Sensei gains love yet never finds peace. Sōseki paints loneliness, hidden guilt and the shadow of ego that can quietly poison a whole life. A spare, timeless Japanese classic.

Olive Kitteridge

by Elizabeth Strout

Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, 2008

Book Summary

This is not one single‑story novel but a linked collection of thirteen short‑stories set in Crosby, a quiet small town on the coast of Maine. All lives revolve, in one way or another, around Olive Kitteridge — a sharp‑tongued, gruff, unpolished retired maths‑teacher.

Olive is honest to a fault, often tactless, quick to judge, rarely soft‑spoken. She loves her quiet, gentle husband Henry, yet often wounds him with her bluntness. She worries about her son Christopher, but their relationship stays tense for decades.

Through many years we watch ordinary townsfolk: depressed teenagers, lonely spouses, people hiding grief, quiet regrets, small hopes. Olive drifts in and out of their lives, sometimes clumsily offering care, more often just being her difficult self.

Age brings loss: Henry has a stroke and dies. Olive faces old age, loneliness, her own mistakes, and the hard truth that kindness does not always look gentle. By the end she learns to see a little more beauty in small, unremarkable moments. The book says no one is purely good or purely bad; most human beings are messy, complicated, and still worthy of being seen.

Short Book Review

Olive Kitteridge is a quiet, deeply humane masterpiece. There is no big drama, no shocking plot twists. Its power comes from truthful portraits of everyday life, ageing, marriage, parenthood, loneliness and regret.

Elizabeth Strout writes with spare, tender prose. Olive herself is the book’s greatest strength: she is far from a likable heroine. She can be rude, self‑righteous and hurtful. Precisely for that reason she feels real. The author does not romanticise small‑town life, nor does she sneer at it. She simply shows people as they are, with their quiet sorrows and fleeting joys.

Some readers find the pace too slow. If you expect adventure or fast‑moving narrative, this book may disappoint you. But if you appreciate subtle, psychologically‑sharp stories about ordinary men and women, it will stay with you long after finishing.

Quote from the book:

“Love is not something that happens to you. Love is something you do.”

⭐ Rating: 4.5 / 5

Verdict: A wise, sad, comforting book about how complicated, and how precious, an ordinary life can be.

English

West wind blows, yellow leaves fall;

the latticed window stands in quiet.

That one line — back then I took it all for granted —

speaks of all the wistfulness of looking back across the years.

Those plain, ordinary days of old,

only when they are long‑gone do we know how precious they were.

Português Europeu

O vento oeste sopra, caem as folhas amarelas;

Wrong, wrong, wrong!

Spring looks the same, yet you are thin in vain,

tears stained with rouge soak your silken handkerchief through.

Peach blossoms fall, pool and pavilion lie idle.

Mountain‑high oaths still live, yet no letter may reach you.

Mãos suaves e rosadas, vinho com selo amarelo,

a primavera inunda a cidade, os salgueiros balançam junto à muralha do palácio.

O vento leste é cruel, a nossa alegria foi breve.

As flores do pessegueiro caem, a lagoa e o pavilhão jazem vazios.

Though mortal world unfolds a thousand dyes,

Only you gleam, a galaxy before mine eyes.

When starlight wanes and thousand sails have gone,

All earthly radiance for me is withdrawn.

The wind holds peace, the moon in stillness lies,

Old dreams abide where memory resides.

Henceforth, hills and streams are transient guests;

No other soul shall stir my inmost breast.

Embora o mundo revele mil matizes,

O vento repousa em silêncio, a lua imóvel permanece,

os velhos sonhos habitam só na memória.

De agora em diante, montanhas e rios são hóspedes fugazes;

Flow : The Psychology of Optimal Experience

Flow : The Psychology of Optimal Experience

Author:Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi(米哈里·契克森米哈賴)

Brief Book Review: Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience

by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi

A landmark work in positive psychology, Flow challenges the common belief that happiness comes from wealth, comfort or passive leisure. Csikszentmihalyi introduces the concept of “flow”, the immersive mental state that arises when personal skill meets well‑matched challenge. In flow, self‑awareness fades, time distorts, and the activity itself becomes its own reward.

“The best moments in our lives are not the passive, receptive, relaxing times… The best moments usually occur if a person’s body or mind is stretched to its limits in a voluntary effort to accomplish something difficult and worthwhile.”

The author names “psychic entropy” as our inner disorder: scattered attention, wandering thoughts and restless anxiety. Flow counteracts this chaos by building inner mental order. Crucially, flow is not limited to work or special talents. It may happen in reading, writing, hand‑crafts, walking or conversation, yet rarely in mindless passive entertainment.

“Happiness is not something that happens. It is not the result of good fortune or random chance. It is something that must be prepared for, cultivated, defended.”

True fulfilment cannot be chased directly as a goal. It emerges as a by‑product of focused engagement. Csikszentmihalyi offers practical principles: set clear small goals, seek immediate feedback, balance challenge and skill, and value intrinsic satisfaction over external praise or material gain.

Insightful and highly practical, Flow speaks especially to those navigating retirement or life transitions. It reminds us that the quality of our inner experience, far more than outer circumstances, shapes how rich our lives can be.

(Flow)

(Psychic entropy)

英文原文“The best moments in our lives are not the passive, receptive, relaxing times… The best moments usually occur if a person’s body or mind is stretched to its limits in a voluntary effort to accomplish something difficult and worthwhile.”

“Happiness is not something that happens. It is not the result of good fortune or random chance. It is something that must be prepared for, cultivated, defended.”

My Salinger Year (2020)

Genre: Independent drama, coming‑of‑age, literary film, based on true memoir

Short overview

Set in 1990s New York. A young aspiring writer Joanna takes a job as an assistant at a famous literary agency, whose most mysterious client is the reclusive author J. D. Salinger. Her main work is replying to mountains of Salinger’s fan letters. Surrounded by old‑world publishing culture, she struggles between routine office work, personal relationships and finding her own writing voice.

Tone

Quiet, reflective, low‑key, dialogue‑driven. No big conflicts or dramatic twists. It is a gentle story about books, youth and self‑discovery, ideal for book‑lovers.

Brief book‑review style note

My Salinger Year is a warm, thoughtful literary drama. Centred on the world of 1990s New‑York publishing, it explores how great literature shapes ordinary people’s lives, while tracing one young woman’s slow journey to claim her own identity as a writer.

Core Quotes from My Salinger Year (2020)

1. Joanna (narrator, opening line)

I grew up in a quiet suburban town just north of New York. I wanted to write novels and speak five languages and travel. I didn’t want to be ordinary. I wanted to be extraordinary.

2. Margaret (Joanna’s boss, about writing)

It’s important to write every day. You have to love it more than anything in the entire world.

3. Salinger’s advice (voiced in the film)

Write. Even if it’s just 15 minutes in the morning. Protect that sanctuary, okay?

4. Joanna, on Salinger’s agency work

The job of an agent is to open up opportunities for their clients, but with Salinger, the logic was reversed. We had to shield him from the outside world.

5. Joanna, on chasing her own path

There’s just other things I want to do. And I’m afraid that if I don’t do them now, I never will.

6. Margaret, life wisdom

Try not to care too much about how people judge you. It can get overwhelming, but just do your job.

Brief Movie Review: My Salinger Year (with integrated quotes)

My Salinger Year is a quiet, literary independent drama set in 1990s New York, adapted from a true memoir. It follows Joanna, a young aspiring writer who lands an assistant job at a prestigious literary agency, tasked with handling the enormous volume of fan mail for the reclusive author J.D. Salinger. The film unfolds at a gentle, unhurried pace, exploring youth ambition, creative identity, and the quiet magic of old‑world publishing culture.

Joanna opens the film with a bold dream: “I wanted to write novels and speak five languages and travel. I didn’t want to be ordinary. I wanted to be extraordinary.” Her strict yet perceptive boss Margaret, a seasoned literary agent, advises her on the discipline of writing: “It’s important to write every day. You have to love it more than anything in the entire world.” Working closely with Salinger’s correspondence, Joanna learns the agency’s core duty is not promoting the author, but shielding him from public chaos: “The job of an agent is to open up opportunities for their clients, but with Salinger, the logic was reversed. We had to shield him from the outside world.”

Moved by the heartfelt fan letters she reads, Joanna begins replying to them personally, slowly discovering her own voice amid the routines of office life. When she faces crossroads between staying in a stable job and chasing her writing dream, she admits: “There’s just other things I want to do. And I’m afraid that if I don’t do them now, I never will.” Margaret offers gentle wisdom to ground her: “Try not to care too much about how people judge you. It can get overwhelming, but just do your job.”

The film carries a tender nostalgia for a pre‑digital literary era, and Salinger’s distant advice echoes throughout: “Write. Even if it’s just 15 minutes in the morning. Protect that sanctuary, okay?” More than a coming‑of‑age story, it is a thoughtful meditation on how literature shapes ordinary lives, and how young creators learn to balance external expectations with their inner creative truth. Understated and warm, it resonates deeply with anyone who has ever chased a life rooted in words and self‑discovery.

A Moveable Feast by Ernest Hemingway

Brief Book Review: A Moveable Feast by Ernest Hemingway

A Moveable Feast is Hemingway’s nostalgic memoir of his youthful, impoverished years as a struggling writer in 1920s Paris, capturing the bohemian spirit of the Lost Generation. Living simply with his first wife Hadley, he writes in cramped cafés, endures hunger, and mingles with iconic literary figures including Ezra Pound, Gertrude Stein, and F. Scott Fitzgerald. It is a quiet meditation on art, poverty, love, and the lasting magic of a city that shapes an artist forever.

Hemingway anchors the book in its most famous line: “If you are lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young man, then wherever you go for the rest of your life, it stays with you, for Paris is a moveable feast.” This quote sums up the indelible mark Paris left on his creativity and identity. He also shares his core belief in honest writing: “All you have to do is write one true sentence. Write the truest sentence that you know.”

He candidly reflects on hunger as a sharpening force for perception: “I learned to understand Cezanne much better and to see truly how he made landscapes when I was hungry.” The memoir avoids sentimentality, leaning into Hemingway’s signature spare, crisp prose. It does not romanticize hardship, but rather celebrates how scarcity, routine, and early passion forged his voice.

More than a travel memoir, it is a love letter to youth, artistic discipline, and the fleeting golden days of Parisian literary life—a reminder that the richest feasts in life are often memory, not material comfort.

All the Light We Cannot See

 Brief Book Review:

Anthony Doerr’s Pulitzer Prize‑winning All the Light We Cannot See is a quiet, lyrical WWII novel that prioritizes ordinary humanity over grand battle narratives. It intertwines the fates of Marie‑Laure, a blind French girl resisting the Nazi occupation from Saint‑Malo, and Werner, a gifted German orphan forced into military service as a radio technician hunting Allied resistance signals. Bound by invisible radio waves, their small acts of kindness defy the cruelty of war.

Doerr anchors the story in its central metaphor: “What do we call visible light? We call it color. But the electromagnetic spectrum runs to zero in one direction and infinity in the other, so really, children, mathematically, all of light is invisible.” This unseen light stands for both radio frequencies and the quiet empathy that survives hatred. Etienne, Marie‑Laure’s great‑uncle, echoes this core idea: “The most important light of all is the light we cannot see.”

The novel rejects simplistic moral binaries. As Marie‑Laure reflects on resilience: “When I lost my sight, people said I was brave. When my father left, people said I was brave. But it is not bravery; I have no choice. I wake up and live my life.” Werner, trapped in the Nazi system, ultimately chooses mercy over duty, proving that individual goodness can persist even when the world collapses.

Meditative and emotionally resonant, the book reminds readers that compassion often lives in the unobserved, uncelebrated moments—and that the light we cannot see is what truly sustains us through darkness.

Paterson

 Paterson (2016) Full Story Summary

Directed by Jim Jarmusch, the film unfolds over one ordinary week in Paterson, New Jersey — both the name of the small industrial city and the protagonist, a quiet bus driver played by Adam Driver.

Basic Daily Routine

Paterson wakes every morning at 6:15 a.m. beside his wife Laura. He works the 23 bus route, observing passengers’ casual conversations and jotting down poetry in a secret notebook during breaks, lunch by the Great Falls of the Passaic River, and quiet evenings at home.

After work, he walks their English bulldog Marvin, stops at the same local bar for one beer, then returns to Laura. Their personalities contrast gently: Paterson lives in steady routine, while Laura is full of restless, creative ideas — baking cupcakes, redecorating their home in black-and-white themes, learning guitar, dreaming of opening a dessert business. They love each other deeply; Laura is his only reader, always urging him to publish his poems.

Small Events Through the Week

Little quiet incidents punctuate his repetitive days:

• A rapper performs poetry on his bus route.

• At the bar, a troubled actor pulls a toy gun in a dramatic breakup scene, which Paterson calmly defuses.

• Laura succeeds at a farmers’ market selling her homemade cupcakes, and the couple goes out to celebrate with a movie night.

The Crisis

That Saturday night, when they return home, they discover Marvin has torn apart Paterson’s only notebook — every poem he has written is destroyed. He never made copies. Paterson is devastated, but he does not rage or cry; he sits in silent grief, adrift without his private creative world.

The Ending & Theme

Heartbroken, he sits alone by the waterfall. A Japanese tourist, also a poet and admirer of William Carlos Williams’ epic poem Paterson, strikes up a conversation with him. The stranger talks about creativity, routine, and how poetry lives inside a person, not just on paper. He gifts Paterson a blank new notebook.

Paterson opens it and begins writing again, quietly reclaiming his inner life. The film closes as his daily rhythm resumes, emphasizing that art and meaning survive routine, loss, and the quiet magic of ordinary life.

Core Idea

The movie is a love letter to everyday creativity: poetry does not belong to famous writers, but to anyone who pauses to notice beauty in small, mundane moments. Routine is not empty — it is the soil where art grows.

《The Correspondent》

 The Correspondent

Author: Virginia Evans

Genre: Epistolary literary fiction(書信體文學小說)

Book Review

Brief Synopsis

Sybil Van Antwerp is a seventy‑three‑year‑old retired lawyer. She lives a quiet life and keeps the old‑fashioned habit of writing letters. She writes to friends, strangers, authors, and also composes many letters she never actually sends.

Behind this gentle daily ritual lie long‑buried wounds: the early death of her son, fractured family bonds, professional mistakes shaped by grief, and unknown fragments of her own origin uncovered by a DNA test.

As disturbing letters from her past arrive, Sybil can no longer avoid what she has spent decades evading. In her later years, she has to face guilt, memory, loss of sight, and learn self‑forgiveness, not through grand drama, but slowly, word by word on paper.

Strengths

1. The epistolary form is its greatest merit. Letters reveal gaps between what people choose to write and what they hide. Sybil can express herself beautifully in writing, yet remain emotionally isolated — this quiet contradiction feels deeply real.

2. It writes about ageing without sentimentality. The story honestly portrays fading physical ability, fear of losing independence, and the reality that redemption is still possible late in life.

3. It reflects our digital age: instant messages are everywhere, yet genuine, thoughtful communication grows rare. Letter‑writing becomes an act of patience and inner reflection.

4. Grief is not resolved in one moment. Trauma ripples across decades, affecting family, career and every personal choice, and the novel captures this long‑term influence very well.

Weaknesses

• The plot unfolds slowly. Much information unfolds indirectly between lines, which demands patient reading.

• Some secondary characters stay rather distant, seen only through Sybil’s written perspective.

Personal Reflection

This book raises quiet, profound questions closely aligned with themes from The Art of Rest and Happy Ageing.

1. Communication does not equal connection. Sybil is skilled with words, but writing unsent letters becomes also a shelter. We may pour many thoughts outward, while still keeping others at arm’s length. True contact requires not only expression, but courage to be seen in our imperfection.

2. Old age is not only about decline. It can be a time for reckoning. Many imagine later life as peaceful retreat. Sybil’s story shows that the past does not simply disappear with time. Late in life we may finally have space to look back, to acknowledge regret and offer ourselves forgiveness we once withheld.

3. Memory is incomplete truth. What we remember is partial, filtered by sorrow and self‑defence. Healing often means accepting that we cannot rewrite history, yet we can change how we carry it forward.

4. Solitude is different from loneliness. Sybil spends much time alone. Her letter‑writing practice is both escape and salvation. Solitude can feed inner life, yet we also need the risk of real human encounter.

Core quote

“Truth is not a single photograph or a single sentence; it is the slow, painful accumulation of what people refuse to say until someone finally listens.”

A Casa de Hóspedes

A Casa de Hóspedes

Jalaluddin Rumi

O pensamento escuro, a vergonha, a malícia,

recebe‑os à porta sorrindo,

e convida‑os a entrar.

Sê grato por quem quer que chegue,

porque cada um foi enviado

como guia do Além.

The Guest House《

Poet: Jalaluddin Rumi

Full English text(Coleman Barks

The Guest House

This being human is a guest house.

Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,

some momentary awareness comes

as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!

Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,

who violently sweep your house

empty of its furniture,

still, treat each guest honorably.

He may be clearing you out

for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,

meet them at the door laughing,

and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,

because each has been sent

as a guide from beyond.

Core meaning
