Welcome to the Dragon Restaurant

Film Review: Once Upon a Time in the Middle East

Welcome to the Dragon Restaurant

Director: Wen Muye

Lead Actor: Shen Teng

Genre: War‑drama with touches of dark comedy

Runtime: 140 minutes

Summary

Xu Fu, a Chinese chef from Northeast China, travels to a war‑torn Middle‑Eastern country hoping to earn quick money to pay off heavy debts. He opens a Chinese eatery called Dragon Restaurant, expecting only to make a living. When war suddenly erupts, his small restaurant unexpectedly becomes a shelter for displaced civilians and refugees. Not a born hero, Xu Fu is ordinary, timid and self‑preserving at heart. Yet amid gunfire, hunger and chaos, he chooses to protect vulnerable people through simple hot meals. The film contrasts the warmth of cooking against the cruelty of war, exploring humanity, compassion and the preciousness of peace.

Strengths

This anti‑war story is told from the perspective of a common man, without grand, larger‑than‑life heroes. Shen Teng delivers a powerful, restrained performance, moving far beyond his familiar comic roles. Human warmth is embodied in food: in times of chaos, a hot meal becomes dignity itself. The cinematography balances gritty wartime realism with tender human moments. Instead of loud speeches, the film conveys its anti‑war message quietly through everyday survival and small acts of kindness.

Weaknesses

Trailers misleadingly highlight comic scenes. This is not a comedy; most of the narrative carries heavy, sombre tones. Some supporting characters lack deep development, and certain plot beats follow predictable commercial‑film patterns. Graphic depictions of conflict and suffering make it emotionally taxing viewing. It offers no easy answers for real‑world war and injustice.

Reflection

War can burn down buildings and take countless lives, but human goodness may survive in small, ordinary gestures. Peace is not something to be taken for granted. True wealth lies not in money, but in the simple chance to live safely and share warm food with other people.

Conclusion

Highly recommended for viewers who appreciate realistic human‑centred dramas and anti‑war themes. It is not suitable for audiences seeking light‑hearted entertainment.
