Walden; or, Life in the Woods

Ⅰ. Brief English Summary

Walden (Walden; or, Life in the Woods), published in 1854, is the seminal philosophical memoir by Henry David Thoreau, a leading Transcendentalist writer.

Thoreau constructed a modest cabin beside Walden Pond near Concord, Massachusetts, and resided there for two years, two months and two days as a deliberate living experiment. He subsisted by cultivating beans and other crops, recording minute observations of wildlife, seasonal shifts and the landscape, while meditating upon civilisation, materialism and human existence.

The work advances his core argument: most people are trapped within tedious, unexamined routines, consumed by superfluous possessions. By simplifying desires and returning to communion with nature, human beings may reclaim their time, awaken spiritually and live according to their inner truth rather than mainstream social conventions. Though framed as an account of woodland seclusion, it is a penetrating critique of industrial‑age society and a timeless manifesto for self‑reliance and mindful existence.

English Original

I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.

The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation.

《瓦爾登湖》(Walden; or, Life in the Woods)精讀綜述

The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation.

If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer.

I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.

Dancing forges friendships;

Socks weave our bonds.

Dance socks made specially for dancing.

Since I exhausted those beautiful handcrafted socks from Thailand years ago,

I have tried numerous substitutes, none of which proved satisfactory.

They would constantly rip and required frequent replacing.

My fellow dancers recommended large‑sized men’s socks

and selected an attractive pair with white stripes on a black background

to gift me.

They are aesthetically pleasing

and perform brilliantly.

Yet owing to my frequent dancing,

I have already worn through three pairs up to now,

until eventually they were all used up once more.

Yesterday my dance friends presented me with another three pairs.

I am deeply thankful.💕💕

Our story was written long before we met. Many people keep asking what comes next. I answer in Chinese: it is fate. I do not know what chapters are still to be written. But she planted seeds of hope. Those tiny saplings have grown into giant trees, more than fifty thousand of them.

And now our own story has also planted a seed of hope in the heart of every person listening today.

I say to every person who hears my voice and sees my face: plant just one tree. Only one.

Imagine if millions upon millions of people across our planet planted a single tree. From South Africa, from every corner of Africa, Europe, Asia — every continent, except Antarctica, that beautiful continent.

Imagine this: if every person could step outside their door, in their backyard, in a park, and plant one tree. How wonderful our world would become.

When I first visited the Mu Us Sandy Land, there was nothing but sand. Today it is lush and green. Those trees are like our children, waving to us in the forest.

Yuzhen and I speak different languages, we look different, yet we are like brother and sister, we understand one another. We are here to build a bridge across nations, for all of us to protect our shared home, this one Earth. This Earth does not belong only to China, nor only to the United States. It belongs to all humanity.

If we fail to protect Mother Earth, she cannot keep giving us our fruits, our flowers, the clean air we breathe.

The Stranger

The Stranger

Author: Albert Camus

Meursault is a French‑Algerian man who does not follow society’s emotional rules. He shows no grief at his mother’s funeral and feels indifferent towards love, marriage and career success.

During a beach clash, dazzled by harsh sunlight, he shoots and kills an Arab man. At his trial, the court focuses not on the crime itself, but on his cold, unfeeling personality. Because he refuses to pretend conventional sorrow, he is found guilty and sentenced to death.

Facing execution, Meursault accepts life’s absurdity — the universe has no built‑in meaning, and society punishes people who reject its social performances. This is a key work of absurdist fiction.

The Moon and Sixpence

Author: W. Somerset Maugham

Inspired by the life of painter Paul Gauguin, The Moon and Sixpence follows Charles Strickland, a middle‑aged London stockbroker who abandons his comfortable family life to pursue painting. Cold‑tempered and indifferent to social morals, he endures poverty in Paris before escaping to Tahiti, where he creates powerful art amid primitive simplicity. Stricken with leprosy and blinded, he orders his greatest murals burned upon his death.

The title symbolises the eternal conflict: the moon stands for lofty artistic ideals, while sixpence stands for mundane, practical everyday life. Maugham does not glorify Strickland. Though gifted, he is selfish and cruel to those around him. The novel provokes readers to reflect: how much are we willing to sacrifice for personal passion, and what price might our dreams impose on other people?

It is a sharp, thought‑provoking classic about ambition, duty and human nature.

(The Moon and Sixpence)

(W. Somerset Maugham)
