Wonderful Meal at " The Eight"

This is the menu of the meal I enjoyed very much.

It was in "The Eight" restaurant of New Hotel Lisboa, as this was a private banquet, we were served in the grand function room, where we can see the beautiful bridge view of the Nam Van area.

I also had a good eating experience in this restaurant the other day, except the price was fairly high, all were WONDERFUL !!

Minor and Significant

Today, read some figures and I can learn out that in our daily life, we consider somethings just have minor differnces, however, with a series of minor changes (e.g. in a few months or a few years; time), the end result is really very significant.

Song -

Song -

Song - I know I'll never love this way again

You looked inside my fantasies
And made each one come true
Something no one else
Had ever found a way to do-oo
I've kept the mem'ries one by one
Since you took me i-in
I know I'll never love this way agai-ain

I know I'll never love this way again
So I keep holdin' on
Before the good is gone
I know I'll never love this way again
Ho-old on, ho-old on
Ho-o-old on

A fool will lose tomorrow
Reaching out for yesterday
I won't turn my head in sorrow
If you should go away
I'll stand here and remember
Just how good it's bee-een
And I know I'll never love this way agai-ain

I know I'll never love this way again
So I keep holdin' on
Before the good is gone
I know I'll never love this way again
Ho-o-old on, ho-old on
Ho-old o-on...

I know I'll never love this way again
So I keep holdin' on
Before the good is gone
I know I'll never love this way again
Ho-old on, ho-old on

I know I'll never love this way again
So I keep holdin' on
Before the good is gone
I know I'll never love this way again
Ho-old on, ho-old o-o-o-on [fade]

My Easy and Quick Dishes

I usually work late in the office, therefore cooking quickly is the first priority for my dinner.

Here are the list of the cooking dishes ( to be updated whenever I remember some of them):

* Steamed soybean curd, with soy sauce and sesame oil (it can be a cold dish)
* Steamed soybean curd with fresh dace(ready made from market), with pepper and soy sauce
* Steamed eggs (with scallops, use chicken soup to replace water)
* Cook soybean curd with mushroom soup (as sauce)
* Cook rice with the canned Milestone soup ( use only a little bit water)

* Balsam pear with canned dace in dark beans

* Balsam pear scrambled eggs
* Tomato scrambled eggs
* Minced beef scrambled eggs

* Fried chicken with lemon juice sauce
* Fried chicken with tomato sauce
* Fried chicken with pineapples
* Slice chicken meat with potatoes and carrots

* Beef with potatoes and carrots
* Beef with pineapples
* Stirred fry beef with tomato sauce

* Corn soup with eggs

With more time, I can also cook more other dishes, such as making soup -
Vegetable meat soup
Some traditional Chinese soups

Thanksgiving

I started to learn the traniditon of Thanksgiving when I was in States.

This is a warm and important festival to them, they may take a long fly back home to celebrate the dinner with the family, to see all the family members.

There are plenty of my memories for this wonderful season.

I miss the Turkey with carnbeery sauce, I miss the wonderful dinner, more, I miss my college friends.

" Do It At Home" - The Japanese Way

This is the slogan in the poster which I saw on the underground railway station in Japan.

Guess what is the comic that goes with this slogan?

A woman wears her make-up.

Then, I tried to observe the people whenever I took the train.

For my whole trip, I can only find one young lady wore her make-up on the train, it was in the late afternoon.

I also find the Japanese very respective and educated, for they don't use voice mobile phone inside the cabin.

They keep the train clean, and even though during busy hour, the train is very crowded, the cabin is so quiet.

I also saw a lady reading her newspaper nicely and neatly, with her limited space, I really find that this is the Japanese way.

Whenever she turned her page, she folded the whole page vertically into half nicely and neatly,(for us, we usually fold the newspaper horizontally, to make the reading easily, but it takes space), thus she would not occupy the space, nor bother the people next to her.

How considerate of the Japanese!

Whenever I take the public transportation, I am really tired of the people using mobile phone - talk loudly and force me to know his/her conversation. I wish people can learn the Japanese way!!

My First Christmas Break In Berea

The kitchen is for the mother, therefore, I didn't have chance to cook when I was still young, I never entered into my mother's kitchen, all I know was to cook the rice with the rice-cooker.

When I studied abroad, I ate in the student restaurant - "food service", but for Sunday dinner, we had only cold sandwich bag, therefore, I started to cook instant noodles with vegetables and eggs, in order to have a hot meal.

I remember my first Christmas vacation in Berea - this was my real show time to cook - I stayed off campus, for the dorm was close, so did the restaurant.

I needed to buy food from supermarket (it was a long walk), and I cooked my own meals - two times a day, unforgettable Christmas in my life.

At the same time, I also earned some money by working in Boone Tavern during the break.

I was lucky for I helped to house-sit for a nun (church sister) who went for Christmas vacation. One thing was I needed to take a long walk back to the other part of the town to work - according to the work schedule, sometimes, breakfast with lunch shifts, sometimes lunch with dinner shifts.

The house was huge, there was a nice garden and big garage, I had my own room and bathroom. I was also allowed to use her kitchen. I didn't need to pay rent, but in return, I needed to help to feed her dogs and cats.

Snowing, freezing, peaceful, no Christmas presents, no Christmas lights in a quiet small town, I spent that Christmas in a spacious American house and experienced how the beautifully dressed Americans enjoyed their christmas dinners in the restaurant.

Two things I can remember for my first cooking - pork and vegetable soup - delicious, but for the rice - it was terrible, for I didn't know how to cook rice without rice-cooker, it was not well cooked, and I could only have the soup for my first meal in the house.

As time passes, I learned how to cook rice without rice-cooker, and now I can also manage to cook some simple and quick dishes.

I started to like the " Yan can cook" show, yes, if Yan can cook, I can cook too.

I think it is a matter of fresh ingredients and time, with ideas on making the dishes - mix and match, there can be many combinations.

Song - A Whole New World

(Aladdin)I can show you the world
Shining, shimmering, splendid
Tell me, princess, now when did
You last let your heart decide?

I can open your eyes
Take you wonder by wonder
Over, sideways and under
On a magic carpet ride

A whole new world
A new fantastic point of view
No one to tell us no
Or where to go
Or say we're only dreaming

(Jasmine)A whole new world
A dazzling place I never knew
But when I'm way up here
It's crystal clear
that now I'm in a whole new world with you

(Aladdin)Now I'm in a whole new world with you

(Jasmine)Unbelievable sights
Indescribable feeling
Soaring, tumbling, freewheeling
Through an endless diamond sky

(Jasmine)A whole new world
(Aladdin)Don't you dare close your eyes
(Jasmine)A hundred thousand things to see
(Aladdin)Hold your breath - it gets better
(Jasmine)I'm like a shooting star
I've come so far
I can't go back to where I used to be
(Aladdin)A whole new world
(Jasmine)Every turn a surprise
(Aladdin)With new horizons to pursue
(Jasmine)Every moment gets better
(Both)I'll chase them anywhere
There's time to spare
Let me share this whole new world with you

(Aladdin)A whole new world
(Jasmine)A whole new world
(Aladdin)That's where we'll be
(Jasmine)That's where we'll be
(Aladdin)A thrilling chase
(Jasmine)A wondrous place
(Both)For you and me

Alarm Clock

This story always stays on my mind.

It was the summer of 1989, E was about the time to leave for Texas.

We were excited to have a farewell dinner, and we stayed in his home to chat.

All the buddies were chatting happily, such as whether he brought enough clothes and books, he also opened his luggage for us to share (I remember he also brought our highschool buddies' group pictures and the picture we took in my first trip to the northern part of China)... clothes, books and also his alarm clock.

I also played with his interesting alarm-clock. Then, we finished the discussion, he packed the luggage again.

We continued our chatting back in the sitting-room, suddenly, there was a sound came out from his room, we didn't know what was happening.

Suddenly, I was embarrassed for I knew I might have accidentally pressed the button of the alarm clock. E needed to go back to his room to unpack his stuff, to turn off the alarm clock, then re-pack his luggage.

The moment was quite funny, but I was the trouble-maker.

From UPU 's training notes:

Regulatory Uncertainty

Postal markets exhibit the following disadvantages

Poorly defined regularly environments
Inadequate separation of roles and responsibilities
Arbitrary decisions and insufficient management autonomy and accountability
Weak corporate and governance structure
Insufficient management autonomy
Conflicting objectives and targets
Low political priority

- I fully agree

Consumer expections

Universal service
Introducton of a universal service price
Convenient access to counter network to collect mail and to transact payment services
Developemnt of door-to-door services
Ability complete government transactions and payments at postal counters
Ability to access international payment order systems as labour migration grows
Access to basic and micro-banking services
Opportunities to access kiosk-based services for Internet access and services

My Way

To get the peel off the chestnuts - after removing the shell, put them in the boiling water and cook for a while, then throw away the water, use the towel to remove the pill, it is easy and quick.

Use papaya to cook the beef stewed, it can save the time.

Use isoproyl alcohol (消毒火酒) to remove mold (霉 )on leather bags or shoes.

Saturday Dinner

Eating at home tonight.

Cooked an easy hot meal - a plate of oily fresh vegetable, a pot of white fungi, chestnuts, dates and pork meat soup (2 hours) and the lamb stewed (2 hours).

The preparation work took almost 2 hours (not including the shopping in the market) then I left the stoves to work for me.

I worked with my blog for the afternoon, at the end, I have my dinner ready.

Warm and delicious!!

Summer Jobs

Long time ago, I thought I was not lucky for I need to do summer jobs to earn my tuition fee.

But now, looking back, I think it is really a good experience.

In my high school years, I have started to work in the factories. Now, there are not many factories in Macau, for they have already relocated to China.

I have been working in the electronic factories - I know how the production line of the factory works and how to make a radio.

I have been working in a toy factory - I know how they make the toys, from the design to the final products.

I have been working in the garment factories - I know how the clothes and jeans are made, and how they are ironed and packed.

I have been working in an office for a bakery - I know how they order the ingredients, make the bread and how to deliver the products.

I have been working for a project company, I know how the Engineers/bosses need and want for the construction work.

In college, I also worked with my Americans friends, and I have learned how to be professional.

I have been working in the restaurant - I know how the industry works, and how to serve the customers.

I have been working as a Math. Teaching Associate, I know how to keep track of the students' progress and try to find out what they understand and what they don't.

I also worked as a weather observer, I know the procedures to measure and record the temperatures, humidity, winds, rains and snows for the previous 24 hours.

All these experiences are definitely preciousness, and they will stay with me forever!!

Letter / Christmas Card

I can't remember when did I receive a personal writing letter, and when did I send out a letter to my friend (not by e-mail).

I appreciate a lot E is still the one who keeps on sending us handwriting Christmas Card every year, for I always use the excuse - I can always send e-card or call (at the last minute), they are easy, fast, direct and I can save money (Post Office is hardly to get my money about that!)

I think the whole process of sending Christmas Card is long, from picking cards, to getting database, preparing the address and the content of the cards (he usually writes something inside, to make it more personal :)) therefore, I didn't do this process for many years, but still, I like to get his card, it is like a gift. Though we cannot celebrate our festival together, it is still very warm.

Yesterday, I read from newspaper, one post office starts to use e-card to reply to children writing Santa Clause.

If I were the child who wrote to Santa Clause, I would like to get a real one!!

Writing

I feel like falling in love with writing. I want to finish my journals for the China trip in 2005, but the trip was almost 3 weeks long, and there were a lot of details for each day, it takes me forever to finish.

Furthermore, whenever I am with the computer, it is more attractive to put my new thoughts on my blog.

I think it is good to record the meaningful activities, as I realise that for 2006's trip, I almost forget the details of the daily activities, but with my journals, I can keep my memories fresh.

In primary school, I regard daily journal is not for me, as I would like to keep everything as a secret.

In high school, it was a requirement to submit weekly journal. I didn't like that very much, for I didn't have much to write, life was simple to me - went to school, lunch and dinner, helped mother to do housework etc.

After high school, dreaming to be a part-time writer in sub-section of newspaper, I sent my articles/poems to the editor, and got 2 or 3 times published. I was very excited to get the money at that time, and I gave myself a special name on the newspaper. However, I didn't have the record of my writing, for it was long time ago.

As time passed, lazy to write, I didn't like to sit on the desk and put my thoughts on paper, it is not as simple as using the computer.

Later, going back to school again. For my first year in college, we need to write a lot of journals, our own choice of topics. I started to enjoy it very much, and I can also write a lot. Dr. S also like to read my journals and gave me good grade. She encouraged me to write.

During the four years of education, we had to write a lot, all kinds of research papers for different subjects, it was fun, for the brain need to work a lot, how to get materials, how to structure it, how to present it..... a lot of thinking for that.

After that, I still keep a simple habit, I wrote little remarks for special occasion, but I didn't keep the practice long.

Now, I discover that writing is so simple, I can keep all my thinking in my own blog, it is so personal, but at the same time, I can share with my buddies.

Food

We live to eat or we eat to live??

Eating is an important daily activity to human being.

As quality of life improves, people would like to eat healthily and therefore buy expensive and nutritious food.

Yesterday, heard from TV that there are many farm lands which are under cultivated in Africa, that means the supply is going to be behind of our demand.

It seems to me, China may have this problem as many country people would like to go to the cities to work, in order to get a better life.

Do we realise of this? The supply of food is decreasing.

I have experience seeing people spending thousands of dollars for a luxury business banquet in restaurant in Beijing, and wasted a lot of food on the table.

I do know some people are hungry and lack of sufficient nutritious in the remote and under developing area in mainland China.

I always feel bad when people waste food, as I know there are many people they do not have the chance to eat, while we have the food, we should precious them.

When I was working in the restaurant in college, I learned that many Americans would bring their left over with them, I think it is a good habit.

For the Chinese, it is another story, we usually think that it is not good looking. We should change our mind-set.

I also realise that for the large restaurants, food service, food provider (for airlines, hospitals, schools, factories), they usually waste a lot of food, for they need to have a good control of the supply, to make sure enough food be given to the clients.

I think their management should find a solution, to minimise the waste and also make the operations more economically.

"Being" - Karo

TV is showing the documentary film "Being", the natural scenery is so beautiful in Africa, it also introduces the village Karo, the villagers mainly farm and get their own food. I think Karo is rare in the world for more places have been developed.

I remember the articles I read from Echo (三毛), her stories in Sahara. I wish one day I can make a similar trip to Africa. Somehow places there have been developing, but not so developed.

I like Echo's articles, for they are so real, and it seems that I were living in the place of her stories.

It is a good experience to live in different places, to eat and to live like the local people.

To learn the language and to familiar with the culture, it is different with sightseeing and shopping, we can see more by living ourselves in the community.

Going to Africa will be a good experience to learn how they make the living, to get closer of our beautiful nature, there is no more office work, no more poliitics, the life may be very simple, but still there are a lot of wisdom in it.

No more McDonald, no more Starbucks........farming, fishing and hunting are still their main activities. Money to them is another story. Their life is so simple and unique.

In certain areas of the continent, there are still a lot of uncultivated areas, people there can still enjoy their beautiful forests, lakes, mountains, rivers, no pollution, no factories, no cars, just like in paradise, and there are plenty of animals that we miss in our city life, in the natural world.

Their lives are simple but they have beautiful smiling in their faces.

Hair

Recently I have plenty of grey hair.

As my hair is getting thinner and thinner, I am struggling whether I should dye my hair, to make me look better.

But I am afraid that once I dye my hair, I need to do it regularly.

It seems to me it is not good looking to have some grey hair on top ( newly grow) and some black for the whole.

I like natural, and I hate to put chemical stuff on my head, that 's why every time I go to the hair dresser, I always be persuaded to have a change, to perm and dye the hair.

I think I am a scarce animal, since dying hair is very common and fashionable nowadays, it makes people look younger.

I am aging for my hair has told me so.

One solution, I wish all my hair turns into grey - all in grey, so beautiful, one day, who will know!

By the way, I remember one of my college buddies - people call her "red-head" - I like her beautiful natural red hair.

I can't thank you enough!

Read an article from today 's newspaper, I copy the phrases and put them at the bottom of this article, and I would like to take this opportunity to say a few words -

To all my family members and dearest friends:

I can't thank you enough, but I would say deeply from the bottom of my heart, I appreciate a lot of your support and help, thanks for everything you do for me.

You're a gem.」

You're a gem與You are one in a million意義相近,都有極少、珍貴、獨一無二的含意。

" Home" 家

Went to a restaurant named " Home" in China.

There are several shops for this restaurant in different locations in the region.

It sells 湖南菜 ( dishes from a province in the southern part of the lack in mainland China), very hot and spicy, mainly meat, and it emphasizes that the food are like mother 's cooking.

First of all, the environment is very good, for there are many tables, but with the design and the arrangement, it is very comfortable, and makes you feel relax to enjoy the food.

Since I don't like greasy food very much, I only taste some of the food in order to prevent upsetting my stomach, but still I think it is a good place for buddy gathering, to eat and to talk, once in a blue moon.

Chestnut - Largo de Senado

In the cold Friday evening, walk out of my office and head to the food market.

It is very seldom, there is a long line ( over 15 people ) waiting nicely in front of the chestnut hawker. I think there should be some visitors (Grand Prix week), for usually, there are only few customers waiting. We don't need to have such a long and NEAT line. ( One comment - nowadays, I think most Macaneses are observing the rule of line-up, such as in the bank or waiting for free newspapers, but I am still looking forward for the people line-up for the transportation.)

I remember I saw this hawker since I was small, it is located besides of Turismo Office, facing the fountain and the Post office in Central.

The stand is small, two persons work over there, to fry the sweet chestnuts. Long time ago, they manually fried the chestnuts, but now I can see they use the machines, but it still needs time to get them ready.

It only opens during winter time, but I think the business is good, for it is almost monopoly, due to the licence and the good location.

Furthermore, it is like part of our tradition, cold weather with hot sweet chestnut, so warm !! Most of our old Macaneses know this warm street snack.

Macau Grand Prix

It is Grand Prix again, every year the traffic is kind of a mess.

With accumulated experience, there should be improvement, however, I can't see any major arrangement, especially to improve the traffic. May be the people in charge consider the inconvenience is only for few days.

Besides, I am very sensitive of the crowded " San Ma Lou", for there are so many visitors on the pavement, especially during the busy hours - it wastes my time to walk home or office.

As time passes, the citizens are forced to be familiar of the inconvenience for the Grand Prix.

I remember when I was in my primary school, our lessons were also be affected during the week of Grand Prix, as the cars made a lot of noises. However, we were so excited to see the different kinds of cars passed the street when we were out of school (It should be fun for kids - especially for the boys).

I know some friends who are also living in the racing area, and some enjoy watching the race for free while some feel the special arrangement is very annoying.

Anyway, this is a great event for Macau !

TVB 42nd Anniversary Show

Tonight, there is a big show on TV for TVB's 42 birthday.

This is kind of tradition, whenever I am in Macau, I usually stay in front of TV to catch up the show. I think many people do this too!!

Yes, we have grown up with TVB, all the dramas and a lot of familiar songs are our old buddies.

In ths show, we can usually see many of the artists - big or small, young or old, especially for the female artists, they dress beautifully and wear a lot of jewelleries, to attract the eyes of the audiences.

Kind of missing Fei Fei - she has left for the heaven, she used to be the symbol of the show, for many years.

Yes, this is true, the show must go on!! This is real life.

SEN. BARACK OBAMA'S IOWA VICTORY SPEECH

"We beat back the policies of fear and doubts and cynicism."

By Deborah White, About.com Guide

Sen. Barack Obama delivered this eloquent, soaring speech to thunderous ovation and public accolade after he won the Iowa Democratic caucus on January 3, 2008, which was the first vote in the 2008 presidential primary race. (See Obama Soars to Iowa Victory for more details.
His words in Iowa were strongly reminiscent of Barack Obama's Inspiring 2004 Democratic Convention Speech.

His 2004 convention speech first brought Barack Obama to national attention. Obama-supporter Oprah Winfrey said that as she watched Obama deliver his famed 2004 speech, she thought, "This is something above and beyond politics."

SEN. BARACK OBAMA'S IOWA VICTORY SPEECH

You know, they said this day would never come.

They said our sights were set too high. They said this country was too divided, too disillusioned to ever come together around a common purpose.

But on this January night, at this defining moment in history, you have done what the cynics said we couldn't do.

You have done what the state of New Hampshire can do in five days. You have done what America can do in this new year, 2008.

Our Time for Change Has Come

In lines that stretched around schools and churches, in small towns and in big cities, you came together as Democrats, Republicans and independents, to stand up and say that we are one nation. We are one people. And our time for change has come.

You said the time has come to move beyond the bitterness and pettiness and anger that's consumed Washington.

To end the political strategy that's been all about division, and instead make it about addition. To build a coalition for change that stretches through red states and blue states.

Because that's how we'll win in November, and that's how we'll finally meet the challenges that we face as a nation.

We're Choosing Hope over Fear

We are choosing hope over fear.

We're choosing unity over division, and sending a powerful message that change is coming to America.

You said the time has come to tell the lobbyists who think their money and their influence speak louder than our voices that they don't own this government -- we do. And we are here to take it back.

The time has come for a president who will be honest about the choices and the challenges we face, who will listen to you and learn from you, even when we disagree, who won't just tell you what you want to hear, but what you need to know.

And in New Hampshire, if you give me the same chance that Iowa did tonight, I will be that president for America.

Affordable Health Care for Every American

•I'll be a president who finally makes health care affordable and available to every single American, the same way I expanded health care in Illinois by bringing Democrats and Republicans together to get the job done.

•I'll be a president who ends the tax breaks for companies that ship our jobs overseas and put a middle-class tax cut into the pockets of working Americans who deserve it.

•I'll be a president who harnesses the ingenuity of farmers and scientists and entrepreneurs to free this nation from the tyranny of oil once and for all.

•And I'll be a president who ends this war in Iraq and finally brings our troops home...

•... who restores our moral standing...

•... who understands that 9/11 is not a way to scare up votes but a challenge that should unite America and the world against the common threats of the 21st century.
Common threats of terrorism and nuclear weapons, climate change and poverty, genocide and disease.
Tonight, we are one step closer to that vision of America because of what you did here in Iowa.

And so I'd especially like to thank the organizers and the precinct captains, the volunteers and the staff who made this all possible.

And while I'm at it on thank yous, I think it makes sense for me to thank the love of my life, the rock of the Obama family, the closer on the campaign trail. Give it up for Michelle Obama.

I know you didn't do this for me. You did this -- you did this because you believed so deeply in the most American of ideas -- that in the face of impossible odds, people who love this country can change it.

I know this. I know this because while I may be standing here tonight, I'll never forget that my journey began on the streets of Chicago doing what so many of you have done for this campaign and all the campaigns here in Iowa, organizing and working and fighting to make people's lives just a little bit better.

I know how hard it is. It comes with little sleep, little pay and a lot of sacrifice. There are days of disappointment.

A Nation Less Divided, More United

But sometimes, just sometimes, there are nights like this; a night that, years from now, when we've made the changes we believe in, when more families can afford to see a doctor, when our children -- when Malia and Sasha and your children inherit a planet that's a little cleaner and safer, when the world sees America differently, and America sees itself as a nation less divided and more united, you'll be able to look back with pride and say that this was the moment when it all began.

This was the moment when the improbable beat what Washington always said was inevitable.

This was the moment when we tore down barriers that have divided us for too long; when we rallied people of all parties and ages to a common cause; when we finally gave Americans who have never participated in politics a reason to stand up and to do so.

We Beat Back the Policies of Fear and Cynicism

This was the moment when we finally beat back the policies of fear and doubts and cynicism, the politics where we tear each other down instead of lifting this country up. This was the moment.

Years from now, you'll look back and you'll say that this was the moment, this was the place where America remembered what it means to hope.

For many months, we've been teased, even derided for talking about hope. But we always knew that hope is not blind optimism. It's not ignoring the enormity of the tasks ahead or the roadblocks that stand in our path.

It's not sitting on the sidelines or shirking from a fight. Hope is that thing inside us that insists, despite all the evidence to the contrary, that something better awaits us if we have the courage to reach for it and to work for it and to fight for it.

Hope: Bedrock of the United States

•Hope is what I saw in the eyes of the young woman in Cedar Rapids who works the night shift after a full day of college and still can't afford health care for a sister who's ill. A young woman who still believes that this country will give her the chance to live out her dreams.

•Hope is what I heard in the voice of the New Hampshire woman who told me that she hasn't been able to breathe since her nephew left for Iraq. Who still goes to bed each night praying for his safe return.

•Hope is what led a band of colonists to rise up against an empire. What led the greatest of generations to free a continent and heal a nation. What led young women and young men to sit at lunch counters and brave fire hoses and march through Selma and Montgomery for freedom's cause.

•Hope -- hope is what led me here today. With a father from Kenya, a mother from Kansas and a story that could only happen in the United States of America.

•Hope is the bedrock of this nation. The belief that our destiny will not be written for us, but by us, by all those men and women who are not content to settle for the world as it is, who have the courage to remake the world as it should be.
That is what we started here in Iowa and that is the message we can now carry to New Hampshire and beyond.
The same message we had when we were up and when we were down; the one that can save this country, brick by brick, block by block, (inaudible) that together, ordinary people can do extraordinary things.

Because we are not a collection of red states and blue states. We are the United States of America. And in this moment, in this election, we are ready to believe again.

Thank you, Iowa.

President Obama's First Inaugural Address

Jan 20 2009

My fellow citizens: I stand here today humbled by the task before us, grateful for the trust you have bestowed, mindful of the sacrifices borne by our ancestors.

I thank President Bush for his service to our nation as well as the generosity and cooperation he has shown throughout this transition.

Forty-four Americans have now taken the presidential oath.

The words have been spoken during rising tides of prosperity and the still waters of peace. Yet, every so often the oath is taken amidst gathering clouds and raging storms. At these moments, America has carried on not simply because of the skill or vision of those in high office, but because We the People have remained faithful to the ideals of our forbearers, and true to our founding documents.

So it has been. So it must be with this generation of Americans.

That we are in the midst of crisis is now well understood. Our nation is at war against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred. Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age.

Homes have been lost, jobs shed, businesses shuttered. Our health care is too costly, our schools fail too many, and each day brings further evidence that the ways we use energy strengthen our adversaries and threaten our planet.

These are the indicators of crisis, subject to data and statistics. Less measurable, but no less profound, is a sapping of confidence across our land; a nagging fear that America's decline is inevitable, that the next generation must lower its sights.

Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real, they are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this America: They will be met.

On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord.

On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn-out dogmas that for far too long have strangled our politics.

We remain a young nation, but in the words of Scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things. The time has come to reaffirm our enduring spirit; to choose our better history; to carry forward that precious gift, that noble idea, passed on from generation to generation: the God-given promise that all are equal, all are free, and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness.

In reaffirming the greatness of our nation, we understand that greatness is never a given. It must be earned. Our journey has never been one of shortcuts or settling for less.

It has not been the path for the faint-hearted, for those who prefer leisure over work, or seek only the pleasures of riches and fame.

Rather, it has been the risk-takers, the doers, the makers of things -- some celebrated, but more often men and women obscure in their labor -- who have carried us up the long, rugged path towards prosperity and freedom.

For us, they packed up their few worldly possessions and traveled across oceans in search of a new life. For us, they toiled in sweatshops and settled the West, endured the lash of the whip and plowed the hard earth.

For us, they fought and died in places Concord and Gettysburg; Normandy and Khe Sahn.

Time and again these men and women struggled and sacrificed and worked till their hands were raw so that we might live a better life. They saw America as bigger than the sum of our individual ambitions; greater than all the differences of birth or wealth or faction.

This is the journey we continue today. We remain the most prosperous, powerful nation on Earth. Our workers are no less productive than when this crisis began. Our minds are no less inventive, our goods and services no less needed than they were last week or last month or last year. Our capacity remains undiminished. But our time of standing pat, of protecting narrow interests and putting off unpleasant decisions -- that time has surely passed.

Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America.

For everywhere we look, there is work to be done.

The state of our economy calls for action: bold and swift. And we will act not only to create new jobs but to lay a new foundation for growth.

We will build the roads and bridges, the electric grids and digital lines that feed our commerce and bind us together.

We will restore science to its rightful place and wield technology's wonders to raise health care's quality and lower its costs.

We will harness the sun and the winds and the soil to fuel our cars and run our factories. And we will transform our schools and colleges and universities to meet the demands of a new age.

All this we can do. All this we will do.

Now, there are some who question the scale of our ambitions, who suggest that our system cannot tolerate too many big plans. Their memories are short, for they have forgotten what this country has already done, what free men and women can achieve when imagination is joined to common purpose and necessity to courage.

What the cynics fail to understand is that the ground has shifted beneath them, that the stale political arguments that have consumed us for so long, no longer apply.

The question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works, whether it helps families find jobs at a decent wage, care they can afford, a retirement that is dignified.

Where the answer is yes, we intend to move forward. Where the answer is no, programs will end.

And those of us who manage the public's knowledge will be held to account, to spend wisely, reform bad habits, and do our business in the light of day, because only then can we restore the vital trust between a people and their government.

Nor is the question before us whether the market is a force for good or ill. Its power to generate wealth and expand freedom is unmatched.

But this crisis has reminded us that without a watchful eye, the market can spin out of control. The nation cannot prosper long when it favors only the prosperous.

The success of our economy has always depended not just on the size of our gross domestic product, but on the reach of our prosperity; on the ability to extend opportunity to every willing heart -- not out of charity, but because it is the surest route to our common good.

As for our common defense, we reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals.

Our founding fathers faced with perils that we can scarcely imagine, drafted a charter to assure the rule of law and the rights of man, a charter expanded by the blood of generations.

Those ideals still light the world, and we will not give them up for expedience's sake.

And so, to all other peoples and governments who are watching today, from the grandest capitals to the small village where my father was born: know that America is a friend of each nation and every man, woman and child who seeks a future of peace and dignity, and we are ready to lead once more.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with the sturdy alliances and enduring convictions.

They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use. Our security emanates from the justness of our cause; the force of our example; the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

We are the keepers of this legacy, guided by these principles once more, we can meet those new threats that demand even greater effort, even greater cooperation and understanding between nations. We'll begin to responsibly leave Iraq to its people and forge a hard- earned peace in Afghanistan.

With old friends and former foes, we'll work tirelessly to lessen the nuclear threat and roll back the specter of a warming planet.

We will not apologize for our way of life nor will we waver in its defense.

And for those who seek to advance their aims by inducing terror and slaughtering innocents, we say to you now that, "Our spirit is stronger and cannot be broken. You cannot outlast us, and we will defeat you."

For we know that our patchwork heritage is a strength, not a weakness.

We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus, and nonbelievers. We are shaped by every language and culture, drawn from every end of this Earth.

And because we have tasted the bitter swill of civil war and segregation and emerged from that dark chapter stronger and more united, we cannot help but believe that the old hatreds shall someday pass; that the lines of tribe shall soon dissolve; that as the world grows smaller, our common humanity shall reveal itself; and that America must play its role in ushering in a new era of peace.

To the Muslim world, we seek a new way forward, based on mutual interest and mutual respect.

To those leaders around the globe who seek to sow conflict or blame their society's ills on the West, know that your people will judge you on what you can build, not what you destroy.

To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history, but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist.
To the people of poor nations, we pledge to work alongside you to make your farms flourish and let clean waters flow; to nourish starved bodies and feed hungry minds.

And to those nations like ours that enjoy relative plenty, we say we can no longer afford indifference to the suffering outside our borders, nor can we consume the world's resources without regard to effect. For the world has changed, and we must change with it.

As we consider the road that unfolds before us, we remember with humble gratitude those brave Americans who, at this very hour, patrol far-off deserts and distant mountains. They have something to tell us, just as the fallen heroes who lie in Arlington whisper through the ages.

We honor them not only because they are guardians of our liberty, but because they embody the spirit of service: a willingness to find meaning in something greater than themselves.

And yet, at this moment, a moment that will define a generation, it is precisely this spirit that must inhabit us all.

For as much as government can do and must do, it is ultimately the faith and determination of the American people upon which this nation relies.

It is the kindness to take in a stranger when the levees break; the selflessness of workers who would rather cut their hours than see a friend lose their job which sees us through our darkest hours.

It is the firefighter's courage to storm a stairway filled with smoke, but also a parent's willingness to nurture a child, that finally decides our fate.

Our challenges may be new, the instruments with which we meet them may be new, but those values upon which our success depends, honesty and hard work, courage and fair play, tolerance and curiosity, loyalty and patriotism -- these things are old.

These things are true. They have been the quiet force of progress throughout our history.

What is demanded then is a return to these truths. What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility -- a recognition, on the part of every American, that we have duties to ourselves, our nation and the world, duties that we do not grudgingly accept but rather seize gladly, firm in the knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, so defining of our character than giving our all to a difficult task.

This is the price and the promise of citizenship.

This is the source of our confidence: the knowledge that God calls on us to shape an uncertain destiny.

This is the meaning of our liberty and our creed, why men and women and children of every race and every faith can join in celebration across this magnificent mall. And why a man whose father less than 60 years ago might not have been served at a local restaurant can now stand before you to take a most sacred oath.

So let us mark this day in remembrance of who we are and how far we have traveled.

In the year of America's birth, in the coldest of months, a small band of patriots huddled by nine campfires on the shores of an icy river.

The capital was abandoned. The enemy was advancing. The snow was stained with blood.

At a moment when the outcome of our revolution was most in doubt, the father of our nation ordered these words be read to the people:

"Let it be told to the future world that in the depth of winter, when nothing but hope and virtue could survive, that the city and the country, alarmed at one common danger, came forth to meet it."

America, in the face of our common dangers, in this winter of our hardship, let us remember these timeless words; with hope and virtue, let us brave once more the icy currents, and endure what storms may come; let it be said by our children's children that when we were tested we refused to let this journey end, that we did not turn back nor did we falter; and with eyes fixed on the horizon and God's grace upon us, we carried forth that great gift of freedom and delivered it safely to future generations.

Thank you. God bless you.

Barack Obama's Uplifting Election Night Speech

Remarks by President-Elect Barack Obama
November 4, 2008, Election Night
Chicago, Illinois

If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time, who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer.

All Things Are Possible in America

It's the answer told by lines that stretched around schools and churches in numbers this nation has never seen, by people who waited three hours and four hours, many for the first time in their lives, because they believed that this time must be different, that their voices could be that difference.

It's the answer spoken by young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and Republican, black, white, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, gay, straight, disabled and not disabled.

Americans who sent a message to the world that we have never been just a collection of individuals or a collection of red states and blue states.

We are, and always will be, the United States of America.

America's Moment of Change

It's the answer that led those who've been told for so long by so many to be cynical and fearful and doubtful about what we can achieve to put their hands on the arc of history and bend it once more toward the hope of a better day.

It's been a long time coming, but tonight, because of what we did on this date in this election at this defining moment change has come to America.

Congratulating Sen. McCain

A little bit earlier this evening, I received an extraordinarily gracious call from Senator McCain.

Senator McCain fought long and hard in this campaign. And he's fought even longer and harder for the country that he loves. He has endured sacrifices for America that most of us cannot begin to imagine. We are better off for the service rendered by this brave and selfless leader.

I congratulate him; I congratulate Governor Palin for all that they've achieved. And I look forward to working with them to renew this nation's promise in the months ahead.

I want to thank my partner in this journey, a man who campaigned from his heart, and spoke for the men and women he grew up with on the streets of Scranton and rode with on the train home to Delaware, the vice president-elect of the United States, Joe Biden.

Michelle, Sasha and Malia Obama

And I would not be standing here tonight without the unyielding support of my best friend for the last 16 years the rock of our family, the love of my life, the nation's next first lady, Michelle Obama.

Sasha and Malia, I love you both more than you can imagine. And you have earned the new puppy that's coming with us to the new White House.

And while she's no longer with us, I know my grandmother's watching, along with the family that made me who I am. I miss them tonight. I know that my debt to them is beyond measure.

To my sister Maya, my sister Alma, all my other brothers and sisters, thank you so much for all the support that you've given me. I am grateful to them.

The Best Campaign Team Ever Assembled

And to my campaign manager, David Plouffe, the unsung hero of this campaign, who built the best -- the best political campaign, I think, in the history of the United States of America.

To my chief strategist David Axelrod who's been a partner with me every step of the way.

To the best campaign team ever assembled in the history of politics... you made this happen, and I am forever grateful for what you've sacrificed to get it done.

United States Victory speech by US President Bush

WASHINGTON - Following is text of the speech by President George W Bush after his re-election.

"The voters turned out (出來投票) in record (破紀錄的) numbers and delivered an historic victory.

"Earlier today, Senator Kerry called with his congratulations. We had a really good phone call. He was very gracious Senator Kerry waged (開展) a spirited (充滿活力) campaign, and he and his supporters can be proud of their efforts.

"Laura and I wish Senator Kerry and Teresa and their whole family all our best wishes.

"America has spoken, and I'm humbled (使謙恭) by the trust and the confidence of my fellow citizens. With that trust comes a duty to serve all Americans. And I will do my best to fulfill that duty every day as your president.

"There are many people to thank and my family comes first. Laura is the love of my life. I'm glad you love her too. I want to thank our daughters who joined their dad for his last campaign. I appreciate the hard work of my sister and brothers.

"I especially want to thank my parents for their loving support. I'm grateful (感激的) to the vice president and Lynne and their daughters, who have worked so hard and been such a vital (重要的) part of our team.

"The vice president serves America with wisdom and honour and I'm proud to serve beside him.

"I want to thank my superb (一流的) campaign team. I want to thank you all for your hard work. I was impressed every day by how hard and how skillful (熟練的) our team was.

"I want to thank the thousands of our supporters across our country. I want to thank you for your hugs (擁抱) on the rope lines1. I want to thank you for your prayers on the rope lines. I want to thank you for your kind words on the rope lines.

"I want to thank you for everything you did to make the calls and to put up (張貼) the signs, to talk to your neighbours and to get out2 the vote. And because you did the incredible (了不起的) work, we are celebrating today.

"There is an old saying (諺語), `Do not pray for tasks equal to your powers (能力); pray for powers equal to your tasks.'

"In four historic years, America has been given great tasks and faced them with strength and courage. Our people have restored the vigour (活力) of this economy and shown resolve (決心) and patience in a new kind of war.

"Our military has brought justice to the enemy and honour to America. Our nation has defended itself and served the freedom of all mankind.

"I'm proud to lead such an amazing country, and I'm proud to lead it forward. Because we have done the hard work, we are entering a season (時期) of hope.

"We will continue our economic progress. We'll reform (改革) our outdated (過時的) tax code (稅法). We'll strengthen the Social Security for the next generation. We'll make public schools all they can be3. And we will uphold (堅守) our deepest values of family and faith.

"We'll help the emerging democracies of Iraq and Afghanistan ... so they can grow in strength and defend their freedom.

"And then our service men and women (男女軍人) will come home with the honour they have earned.

"With good allies at our side, we will fight this war on terror with every resource of our national power so our children can live in freedom and in peace.

"Reaching these goals will require the broad (廣泛的) support of Americans. So today I want to speak to every person who voted for my opponent (對手).

"To make this nation stronger and better, I will need your support and I will work to earn ((通過努力)取得) it. I will do all I can do to deserve your trust.

"A new term (任期) is a new opportunity to reach out to the whole nation. We have one country, one Constitution, and one future that binds (使關係密切) us.

"And when we come together and work together, there is no limit to the greatness of America.

"Let me close with a word (說話) for the people of the state of Texas. We have known each other the longest, and you started me on this journey. On the open plains (平原) of Texas, I first learned the character of our country: sturdy (剛毅的) and honest, and as hopeful as the break of day (破曉). I will always be grateful to the good people of my state. And whatever the road that lies ahead, that road will take me home.

"The campaign has ended, and the United States of America goes forward with confidence and faith. I see a great day coming for our country and I am eager for the work ahead.

"God bless you and may God bless America."

From a friend:

Work

I am kind of workaholic, even though on holidays, I still miss my office work.

As I think I am the one who is responsible of the job, so, I still need to pick up the work after I finish my vacation - I am not an optismistic person - I sometimes consider the glass of water is only half full.

Therefore, I enjoy Friday more than Sunday.

This should be the "expectaion" effect. When I studied Economics, Professor said that expectation effect matters a lot in our life.

That is why in Macau, by the time June and November comes, the firms target to the civil servants, for they have the extra bonus to spend.

As time passes, I am accustomed to the "work" expecation, and I put work as my priority, even though higher than family.

I studied some management courses, I think not only office, I need to have my own life management.

Cold Weather in November

It is very strange, we are only in mid-November, but we got 7-8 C, freezing.... I miss the heater, even though inside the house, I still feel cold.

Is the earth sick? We get all kinds of strange weather, extraordinary cold, extraordinary hot. I kind of don't know what are four seasons?

>
