In youth I knew not sorrow’s true essence,

and delighted to climb the tower’s height.

I climbed the tower’s height time and again,

only to feign melancholy for the sake of poetic lines.

Now I have tasted sorrow to the full depth of life,

yet would speak, then hold my peace.

I would speak, then hold my peace,

and merely sigh: what a crisp and splendid autumn day.
