名人教英文﹕《聖經》故事

【明報專訊】最近，我在本欄介紹了多個源自古希羅神話的典故。其實，除了古希臘 和羅馬文化之外，基督教文化對歐美也產生了很深遠的影響，不少英文用語均源自《聖經 》。
舊約《聖經》中，摩西帶領以色列 人過紅海、出埃及 的故事，相信大家耳熟能詳。《出埃及記》英文為Exodus，可以用來比喻「大逃亡」，例如：
• The sharp increase in corporate taxes in Bermuda led to an exodus of companies from the tax haven.
（百慕達大幅提高企業稅，導致大批公司離開這個避稅港。）
• The public medical system is facing collapse because of an exodus of doctors to private hospitals.
（大量醫生流失到私家醫院，令公共醫療制度面臨崩潰。）

《出埃及記》記述，上帝向以色列人許下承諾，會帶領他們到一片豐饒的樂土—— a land flowing with milk and honey（流奶與蜜之地），這就是以色列人的Promised Land（應許之地）。英文有慣用語the land of milk and honey，意即一切無缺的理想國度，如：Many immigrants to the United States thought of the country as the land of milk and honey.（許多移民到美國 的人視那裏為遍地黃金的理想國。）Promised land亦成為「樂土」的代名詞，如：Sunny California is the promised land of beach lovers. （陽光燦爛的加州是海灘愛好者的樂土。）

不過，以色列人離開埃及後，還流落荒野40年，才得以進入神所應許的迦南美地。《聖經》舊約和新約都時常提到「荒野」（the wilderness），耶穌受洗後，也到了荒野，受魔鬼試探。因此，the wilderness象徵試煉（trials and tribulations），例如：After he stepped down from his position as the mayor, he learnt many lessons from the political wilderness.（他辭任市長後，經歷種種政治試煉，得到不少教訓。）

源自《聖經》的英文用語還有很多，下次續談。
