Plot Summary
Set in the 1850s, Scottish immigrants Robert and Jennie settle in Eureka, a small town in Wisconsin. Robert builds a boat workshop and the couple raise six children, living a peaceful, happy rural life.
Tragedy strikes when their eldest son Robbie is only twelve. Robert contracts an illness and passes away suddenly. Jennie struggles to support six young children alone, until exhaustion leads her to a fatal illness years later.
On her deathbed, Jennie tells Robbie her last wish: he must find kind local families to adopt each of his younger siblings. The title All Mine to Give refers to Jennie’s greatest gift to her children—safe, loving homes, rather than money or property.
Twelve-year-old Robbie takes on an adult’s heavy burden. He visits every caring household in town one by one and sends his brothers and sisters to new families. He hides his grief each time he parts with a sibling and bears loneliness silently.
By the end, all his brothers and sisters have found warm new families. Left alone on a snowy Christmas night, Robbie stands in the snow, gazing at the glowing windows of every house that shelters his family. He realises his mother’s ultimate act of love has given all her children a place to belong.
