The town is sharply split into two rival teenage gangs divided by social class:

1. Greasers: Poor working-class teens from the east side, including 14-year-old sensitive narrator Ponyboy Curtis, his two elder brothers Darry and Sodapop, quiet best friend Johnny, reckless tough guy Dally, and their gang mates. Their parents died in a car crash, so Darry raises his two younger brothers alone.

2. Socs (Socials): Wealthy privileged teens from the west side, who drive nice cars and often attack Greasers for fun.

1. Ponyboy meets Cherry, a kind Soc girl, at a drive-in cinema. They connect deeply; Cherry admits rich teens also suffer loneliness and emptiness behind their fancy lives.

3. Terrified, the two boys seek help from Dally, who sends them to hide in an abandoned rural church. They spend days reading poetry and dreaming of a world without gang hatred.

4. When they return to town to turn themselves in, they find the church on fire with young children trapped inside. Ponyboy and Johnny rush in to rescue the kids. Johnny is severely burned and injured.

5. A massive gang brawl (rumble) breaks out between Greasers and Socs; Greasers win the fight, but Johnny dies from his wounds soon after. His last words to Ponyboy are “Stay gold”—a plea to hold onto innocence and beauty amid cruelty.

6. Heartbroken over Johnny’s death, Dally loses control, robs a shop and gets shot dead by police.

7. In the end, Ponyboy writes down all their painful, tender experiences as a school essay, turning his grief into a story to preserve Johnny’s spirit.
