Plot Summary

Set in the hills of Kamakura, Japan. The protagonist, Hatoko Amamiya, runs the Camellia Stationery Shop, working as a professional letter writer for local residents. After years of raising her children and stepping away from her trade, she reopens the shop once her kids start school.

She receives a steady stream of requests from people unable to voice their feelings openly through phone calls or messages:

• A daughter-in-law hopes to gently remind her mother-in-law about stray hair in home cooking without damaging their family bond.

• An office worker who has faced unfair treatment asks for a resignation letter.

Hatoko does not merely copy down words. She selects suitable paper, adjusts her handwriting and tone, and crafts messages that deliver genuine intentions without hurting the recipient.

Alongside these commissions, Hatoko sorts through belongings left by her grandmother, the original owner of the stationery shop. She discovers a collection of unsent love letters hidden away for decades, recording a forbidden romance from her grandmother’s youth. In the end, Hatoko chooses to burn these letters, letting all regrets and emotions fade away quietly.

Meanwhile, she navigates the complicated relationship with her teenage stepdaughter QP, balancing her family life and her work at the stationery shop.
