Time flies.

Grandmothers

My grandfather passed away when I was in primary school, but I remember him well for he was a very straight man but kind to the ladies, he always dressed nicely- not only ironed all the clothing but also  shining the shoes neatly all the time, and I knew I had three grandmothers.
According to my father, the one who gave birth of him was a lady with surname Ho. My father never got the chance to see his mother as she passed away when my father was a baby - so sad!

I believe this should be the elder grandmother.

The second grandmother was the one who took care of my father when he was a kid - she had a family name of Chan, she didn't have her own child and she spoiled my father a lot and she did every simple thing for my father.

When my grandfather passed away, grandmother Chan chose to settle down in HK. She came to visit us once in a while, however she didn't have good relationship with my mom.

Sometimes she sent us food and cloths by the assistant who worked in the HK-Macau Ferry. I still remember that man, as whenever he arrived our home that meant I had gifts from grandmother Chan.

When I finished my high school study, I liked to visit grandmother Chan because I could spend the weekends there, browsing around and staying in her house in Causeway Bay.

Didn't know when, I reduced my time to visit her as I occupied with the studies and social life.

By the time I knew she moved to the elderly home in Kowloon, I went to visit her few times, but she would always treated me like kids and told me be careful and no need to spend time to visit. At that time, I was very sorry that for an old woman to be alone in an elderly home, the place was crowded and not very nice.

Later on, she moved in an elderly home in Cheung Chau where the air and the environment is nicer, but my traffic time to there was longer, I went there 2-3 times before she died.

Now her cemetery is still in HK (while my grandfather's is in Taipa, I am thinking should they be reunited?), and my father always asks me to take him to pay a respect once in a while.

The third grandmother (Leung) was a lady whom my mother liked to visit her very often. However, even though she lived in Macau, I didn't know exactly where she lived as she moved very often.

According to my mom, she smoked a lot (not only cigarettes, but also.....I didn't know what) and gambled. She had a beautiful daughter with my grandfather, but she made her young daughter to marry an old business man as a incumbent in HK, in return, this grandmother could secure her future life - my grandfather had no objection on this! - I always think that my aunt should have a better husband, but later on, I know that grandmother was intelligent, she was correct, my aunt had a very luxury life as she successfully gave birth 2 sons and 2 daughters.

I didn't have a strong feeling to this grandmother, but it seemed to me the two grandmothers never been together! I can tell that both women were very pretty when they were young, for they wore make-up and dressed elegantly.  They should be attractive women !

They were pretty, skinny, and humble to be the women of my grandfather!

仲好似senior(長輩)咁嘅口脗同佢口地講口野?

1)將自發麵粉450g,1茶匙粗鹽和2茶匙小蘇打(baking powder),在大鋼碗裡混和;
2)牛油4安士切成小丁,放在麵粉裡,用保鮮紙包好放入雪櫃;
3)200g車打芝士磨碎,及;

Forget her full name and I have missed her for many years, since she left Macau and went back to Japan.

Tried many methods to locate her, but failed. Recently 's earthquake event made me miss her even more.

She was an exchange student to UM the year when I came back Macau after my college study.

As I wanted to learn Mandarin, I registered an evening course in an institute where I met this young and elegant lady - she was really hard working - in addition to the normal study, she took the evening course in learning Mandarin, she didn't speak very fluent English, nor her Chinese was minimum, but she could recognize the characters.

She sat next to me, we communicated in our poor Mandarin, as both of us were beginner in the Chinese Mandarin, I had great respect to her as I knew, for a Japanese lady, she faced big challenges to go out of campus to attend this Chinese course, our foundation were different, this was not the course for foreigners!

She studied very hard and she got good praises from our teacher, and our teacher was very kind to help her.

After the class, on weekends, I introduced her to my friends, took her out to experience the Chinese cultures, (as I had been experienced the loneliness in a foreign country), in exchange, she also introduced her Japanese friends to me - that's the way I met Takemei San and Eric San, and a few guys form a big Japan Corporation. We play tennis, we ate out, we cooked at home....it was really wonderful cultural exchange!

Later on, after she left Macau, we kept on our own mailing address, we exchanged mails - I planned to visit her, but didn't make the trip workable, however my friend F got to visit her and was really impressed by her kind treat, F also enjoyed the treat of 德子's parents. Nevertheless, we also admitted that her career path back home was not as great as we were in here, being a female in Japan.

I was kind of jealous of F's travel to Japan. - Later on, F and I realised that 德子 has moved and we lost her contact.

I wish I could find her out and communicate with her, I wish her everything is all right!

Sunday Trip to HK

Went to HK for a one-day trip with my father on Sunday.
Besides went to  Ching Chung Sian Yuan -青松仙苑 in New Territories to pay a respect to my grand-mom's urn space ( took bus 960 from the bus station opposite to Weng On Store direct to Rainbow Bridge and walked several minutes, and later realised that I could avoid walking by taking 58M or 58X direct to the destination, been there few times, but every time I have trouble on identify the location), went to do shopping in Tuen Mun Plaza and  Monk Kok area, and ate in the 添好運 Dim Sum Shop (spending one hour to wait for the table for this famous excellent Dim Sum Shop - still it was worth it).

Did some shopping and experienced the "wonderful" Hong Kong customer service -

Lesson 1:

I bought a jacket in a big department store, I  asked for the medium size.

At first, the assistant gave me the small size and she said that I could wear it. In addition, she gave me the color I didn't like...... and after spending the time, I eventually got my favorable color and size.  By the time I paid, she said that the small size fits me, but the medium size is OK too.  All it depends on whether I wear some clothing inside or not ! - What a good conclusion from her, the saleslady is always right !

Lesson 2:

I bought a coat in a boutique where it offered big sales - there were many customers in the shop including a western traveller.

This customer put on one coat, and it seemed that it was a little bit too tight, and she asked for the bigger size - the lady in the shop, I didn't know whether she is the owner or not, could speak simple English. She told this western customer that it was OK, and didn't allow her to try the other size.  By the time I was checking my item, I talked with the western lady, tried to tell her that the shop assistant was not happy with her, occupyinga lot of time of making busying decision - on size, then color etc.

Then, that shop assistant  asked me not to communicate with the western lady, as it would wasting the time and influencing the shop to do business, she would let her to leave.

I had no words, paid the money and said good-bye to the western lady - I think it is a bad impression to experience this kind of customer service - even though the price/ profit is not high, they should not treat the customers like this.

Lesson 3:

On browsing the lady street, bought some shifty umbrellas because they are so handy and in reasonable price- plus I always lose/break the umbrellas easily - when I checked the umbrellas - I discovered there was one obvious dirty spot in the umbrella, and indicated this to the owner - it was obvious that she noticed that, but she tried to quickly closed the umbrella and didn't allow me to check carefully.

In addition, she said that this spot was not important at all.

At last, I didn't buy this one from her, she was not happy, but I didn't think this is the correct way to do business - if I were her, I would indicate to customers and let them decide !

Death Dowry

Watched this touching movie, and I am really moved by the story.

http://www.cp1897.com.hk/product_info.php?BookId=9789881906465

Salary increase and Pension fund

When we chatted with B about the salary increase and pension fund issue ( hot topics for the civil servants everywhere),  he teased us that it would be easier for him to find a new job in Macau rather than expecting to get salary increase in Portugal.

In addition, same as well, long way for him to wait, as he needs to work until 67 years old.

Macau and Portugal  - two different world !

Love Stories

Last night, went to the concert - "Musical Journey" and dined in Clube Militar with my colleagues.

The concert was very nice, I liked the violin and the piano music played by two young artists -Albert  Cheang and Sharon Siu.

The food was excellent and the atmosphere was wonderful. As B came back from Portugal, we shared stories and updates from each other.

He shared to us his new life as well as his love life - we didn't realise the other hard decision for him when he decided to return to Portugal last year- he actually separated with his girl-friend, and now when he came back this time, his girl-friend had another man.

He committed that this was hard, but life has to go on. He admitted that he is not the kind of person to make commitment easily, and one of us teased on him that he is a bird without leg - fly high all the time, he needs to settle down.

At the same time, I feel the joyful and happiness of one of my colleagues who is going to get marry in May, he is busy on preparing his wedding and whenever I see his wife, they are full of appreciation and luck - they respect each other, care for each other and dedicate to each other - they said that they are a unit !

What a wonderful life!

Repeat*

Repeat*

http://www.minghui-school.org/school/article/2007/2/6/62104.html

Singer Han Hong urges concern about children China. Public figure×Child issue

【明報專訊】Han Hong (韓紅), a well-known singer who sits on the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (全國政協), has submitted a proposal about helping homeless children on the mainland.

Han, who spent her childhood in Tibet (西藏 ), said she fully empathised with poor children's hardships. She wrote on her microblog, "Because I was a poor child, my real roots are ordinary people (因為我是窮孩子出身,老百姓才是我真正的根)."

Han arrived at the venue ten minutes before the session began. In a full set of air force uniform, Han showed journalists what she had jotted down in her notebook. Its cover said "2008". Han explained notebooks were handed out every year at the conference, but, to save on resources, she had used the same one for years.

■Did you know...

China has taken steps to crack down on woman and child kidnapping and trafficking. It is said that those illegal activities have not been deterred at all. Nevertheless, efforts against human trafficking have produced results. Since September 2009, the authorities have cracked 184 cases of child trafficking and 122 cases of woman trafficking and uncovered 72 criminal groups.

Talk

Heard this conversation today:

A man told his friend that he would like to visit a European country, however, he was afraid that he could not talk, as he didn't know the language.

His friend commented that he could talk, definitely, but the local people could not understand him!!

http://book.douban.com/subject/1023045/

I have previewed 杨绛先生 's writing before, and I would love to check out her book "我们仨", by the time I was browsing the books in the library, I got this book.

Good reading and can have a knowledge of her life, though I think her writings are better choice.

Song - Another Day in Paradise

This is the  name of Tham's new blog.

http://thosedaysontheroad.blogspot.com/p/blog-page.html

I have been a long time follower of her previous blog, when she was travelling around the world with her backpack.

She mentioned that she likes this song.

Now here is the lyrics.

Another Day In Paradise lyrics
Songwriters: Collins, Phil;

She calls out to the man on the street
"Sir, can you help me?
It's cold and I've nowhere to sleep
Is there somewhere you can tell me?"

He walks on, doesn't look back
He pretends he can't hear her
He starts to whistle as he crosses the street
She's embarrassed to be there

Oh, think twice, it's just another day for
For you and me in paradise
Oh, think twice, it's just another day
For you, you and me in paradise
Just think about it

She calls out to the man on the street
He can see she's been cryin'
She's got blisters on the soles of her feet
She can't walk but she's tryin'

Oh, just think twice, it's just another day
For you and me in paradise
Oh, yes think twice, it's just another day
For you, you and me in paradise
Just think about it, just think about it

Oh Lord, is there nothing more anybody can do?
Oh Lord, there must be something you can say

You can tell by the lines on her face
You can see that she's been there
Probably been moved on from every place
'Cause she didn't fit in there

Oh, yes think twice, it's just another day
For you and me in paradise
Oh, yes think twice, it's just another day
For you, you and me in paradise
Just think about it, just think about it

It's just another day
For you and me in paradise
It's just another day
For you and me in paradise

It's just another day
For you and me in paradise
It's just another day
For you and me in paradise

It's just another day
For you and me
It's another day
For you and me

It's another day
For you and me in paradise
In paradise

Tale of 2 cities﹕Ballet Dancer from South Africa

Johannesburg is a friendly city. Come and experience the people and the culture and you'll understand. ” — Izak David Claase, a coryphée of the Hong Kong Ballet

When Izak David Claase first set foot in Hong Kong ten years ago, he was greatly shocked by its huge population and its fast pace. "Every place in Hong Kong is packed, especially in public transport. In South Africa, even when you get stuck in a traffic jam, you enjoy some personal space in your own vehicle." Despite being shocked by Hong Kong's crowdedness, David did not find it hard to adapt himself to Hong Kong's lifestyle. "Perhaps I was quite young at that time!"

David's family used to live on the edge of a valley in Johannesburg. A sports-lover and once a rugby player, he hanged around a lot with his younger sisters and other children in his neighbourhood. He says his childhood was full of fun. "We spent time playing in the stream and mud, catching frogs and building tree houses."

David says South Africa is full of spirit and rich in history. It is also a mixture of rich culture, which is demonstrated by the variety of languages it has. According to David, more than ten languages are used in the country. He has learnt five, but has forgotten a lot because he hardly has any chance to use them now. The language most commonly used in South Africa is Afrikaans, which is a mixture of Dutch and English.

South Africans dance in festivals and celebrations. David's interest in ballet was ignited when he watched his elder cousin's first performance. After the show, he was certain he aspired to become a ballet dancer. "I told my parents, 'I know I want to do that (ballet)', not, 'I think I want to.'" David then joined the National Ballet School. He graduated five years later. A Christian, David says he is indebted to God for his talent. He is also thankful for his family's support. "Ballet costs a lot of money. If you want to be good, you need the best teacher. My family gave me the biggest support, both financial and emotional." David recalls being teased and called names by his peers when he began learning ballet. After all, ballet is considered feminine.

Asked what motivated him to come here, David says it is a long story. After he had graduated from the National Ballet School, he was admitted to a company. He danced as a member of it for two years until it disbanded. He was just nineteen then. He then went to the UK, where he did several auditions. That was the first time he had travelled abroad. He did quite well at those auditions and was given several offers, of which one was from the Hong Kong Ballet. "At that time, I thought I should go to Hong Kong instead of staying in the UK because I wanted to explore more of this world."

Before coming to Hong Kong, David spent some time reading about the city. When he finally saw it, he was surprised he did not see the old architecture he had expected to see. When he is free, David usually walks his dog and eats at home. "Practising (ballet) is sometimes so tiring, I just want to stay at home or meet my friends." David says he sometimes does Chinese dishes, "My favourite Chinese dish is sweet and sour pork, but making it is ho ma fan (very troublesome)!"

Surprisingly, David understands and speaks Cantonese. "I once took my family to Ladies Market, and they were shocked by my skill of bargaining in Cantonese." David thinks Cantonese is a very expressive dialect. He can even speak it the way Hong Kong people do. Does it mean he is now a complete Hongkonger? "I consider Hong Kong my home now. I think I'm going to stay here after I've retired."

Raleigh provides expeditions and volunteer projects abroad for people taking a gap year, career break, retirement or time out from education, employment or training. School expeditions, corporate expeditions and expeditions for youth organisations can be tailor-made to suit specific requirements.

Looking for a different daily grind?
Voluntary work abroad is no longer just for gap year students wanting time out. Perhaps you're taking a career break, considering new career opportunities, have retired or the kids have flown the nest. Whatever the reason more of us want to volunteer overseas, challenge ourselves in a new way and give something back. But be warned our volunteer expeditions are no holiday. We like to think of a career break as a very different daily grind!

Galaxy Macau to open on May 15

From: Macau Business

Galaxy Entertainment Group announced yesterday that Galaxy Macau will open on May 15.

Lui Che Woo, the group’s founder and chairman, said that “from the beginning, our vision has been to develop and operate a resort that delivers both international-caliber standards but also captures the heartfelt service culture and unique flavor of Asia – something we call ‘World Class, Asian Heart’.

“This is especially critical for success in a market where Asian travelers are so dominant.”

Analysts heard by Reuters said the opening was unlikely to hurt other gaming operators in Macau.

“I think for the first three or four months, first-timers will want to get in there and try it out. I think that is where the major impact is going to be,” said RBS analyst Philip Tulk in Hong Kong.

N 's back for vacation

After a year,my ex-colleague, N is back from Portugal for 3 weeks' vacation.

Really excited to see him, and glad to know that he enjoys his new life there, and he gets pretty good shape as he does exercise everyday in the gymnastic.

He stopped by our office before we almost left the office, as usual, we chatted for long time, and it was really funny that that he told us that he spent 1.5 hours to walk from Macao Square to Largo Senado during lunch hour - as he met many friends in "San Ma Lou" and he kept on talking with his old friends.

One more thing is - I quite agree with him, most of the people ask the same questions to him, as people are interested to know his life there.

I joked with him that he should record the answers and whenever people ask the questions, let the machine works for him.

We are going to have 2 dinners with him during his stay - let 's have great conversation and good food!

Earthquake and Tsunami in Japan 2011.03.11

http://thelede.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/03/11/video-of-the-earthquake-and-tsunami-in-japan/?no_interstitial#television-networks-show-images-of-destruction

Before 2:30PM checked the latest news and realised that there was an earthquake 7.7 in Japan, told my colleague about that, then, he checked with the Internet, the update was 8.8 magnitude with tsunami, and from the video, we could see the massive destruction from the tsunami.

As time passed, in the late evening, there were a lot of news about that.

We never know what a disaster is until we confirm with the loss of life and the destruction of our normal daily life!

Sakura Japanese Restaurant

Many years ago, went to this restaurant for a buffet dinner, very nice.

As the restaurant is near Ha Sa Beach, inside the Westin Hotel, the traffic time is also a consider factor, I didn't go there for long time.

Last week, M told me that there is a promotion in this restaurant -Japanese food, Sushi/Sashimi, unlimited order with fixed price at MOP260 - very attractive !!

. Hac- Sa Road, No. 1918, The Basement Of The Hotel The Westin Resort Macau; Coloane Island; Tel:853-8899 2304; Fax:853-2887 0011 ...

Like many other students or alumni, March 19 is a special date to us as it is the anniversary of our school. I can't forget this date as when I was in high school, I was very excited to have all kinds of activities other than the normal school lessons.

This year's anniversary is a very special one as it is going to celebrate its 80th anniversary.

High school eduction meant a lot to me, as it could definitely change my whole life, I have lots of memories and made many good friends in the school days. I was also very lucky to have good teachers and now I can still keep in touch with, they are really my life time teachers !

A recommended this restaurant to me, for the buffet is in reasonable price.  I tried the buffet before its renovation. On last Sunday, went there and tried, and I was quite happy with the food and the price, except the traffic was not convenient.

I could see many people in the restaurnt, especially the family gathering, all of them ate happily.

Thanks for the casinos and the big hotels, there are relly many choices for buffet dinner. Comparing with the recent eating in Four Seasons / Grand Lisboa, I think the pricing of Grand Waldo is very attractive - with only 198 patacas, and during this time, they offers 25%, so only 150 patacas, one can enjoy the seafood buffet, there are a lot of varieties of food - nice dinner !!

Writing advice﹕Focus on details

There are several steps to follow when writing a descriptive poem.

Firstly, you need to decide what you want to describe. Often the most interesting poems describe something really specific. Try looking at a photo for a while and focussing on the details, like the way the light falls on your t-shirt and changes its colour. Jot down a few notes while you think.

Once you have a few notes on something specific you would like to describe, think about the structure of your poem. Does your topic lend itself to an organised, repetitive structure or would a non-rhyming poem with varying structure better capture your feelings towards the topic?

At this stage, think about who will read your poem. How can you draw the reader into your description? What do you want the reader to feel when he/she reads your poem? How can you evoke this feeling through words and structure?

Now start writing your poem. Remember to focus on one thing only; describing too many things at the same time will distract the reader.

Sometimes it is a good idea to wait a few days before editing your first draft so you have a fresh perspective.

HK Streets

Streets named after governors:

Almost every governor of Hong Kong had a street named after him. Many streets in Hong Kong were named after its British governors.

■Bonham Road
Bonham Road was named after Sir Samuel George Bonham, Hong Kong's third governor. Bonham Strand and Bonham Strand West were similarly named after him. Originally a shallow swamp, Bonham Strand was reclaimed into land during his term of office. The Strand was thus named after him.

■Pottinger Street
Sir Henry Pottinger was Hong Kong's first governor. He represented Britain at the signing of the Nanjing Treaty (《南京條約》). He took office on 26 June 1843 and served in that capacity until May 1844. Pottinger Street is commonly known as "flagstone street" (石板街) because it is constructed of flagstones.

■Davis Street
Davis Street, like Mount Davis Path (摩星嶺徑) and Mount Davis Road, was named after Sir John Francis Davis, who took over from Pottinger as Hong Kong's second governor. John Francis Davis was responsible for many laws of Hong Kong, such as the Police Law. His governorship saw Hong Kong's first census.

■Robinson Road
There were two "Robinsons" among Hong Kong's governors. However, Robinson Road came into being shortly after Sir Hercules Robinson left office in 1859. It was therefore named after him. The other Robinson, Sir William Robinson, became governor in 1891. In 1861, Hercules Robinson took over the Kowloon Peninsula at Boundary Street (界限街) on behalf of the British crown. The street to the south of Boundary Street was then called Robinson Road. When another Robinson Road was built on Hong Kong Island, the original Robinson Road was renamed Nathan Road (彌敦道).

Streets named after members of the royal family:

Queen Victoria Street
Like Queen's Road, Queen Victoria Street was named after Queen Victoria. There is a road in London with the same name. The Chinese translation of the street is not altogether correct because huanghou (皇后) means an emperor's consort, but Queen Victoria was the sovereign. Nevertheless, it is still in use.

■Prince Edward Road
太子道
Prince Edward Road lies between three districts — Yau Tsim Mong, Kowloon City and Kwun Tong. In the 1920's, the government began developing Mongkok. A road connecting it with nearby Kowloon City was constructed. It was called Edward Avenue (宜華徑). In April 1922, Prince Edward, Crown Prince of Britain, went to the site during his stay in the territory. To commemorate this event, the government renamed it Prince Edward Road.

■King's Road
King's Road was part of the Shaukiwan Road in the 1840s. To cope with increasing traffic, the government began to renovate it in 1934. The project was completed in June 1935. That year the UK celebrated the Silver Jubilee (25th anniversary) of King George V's accession. To commemorate the event, the government named the road after him. Part of the MTR Island Line runs underneath it.

■Queen's Road
Queen's Road, named after Queen Victoria of the Great Britain, is the first road built along the harbour in Hong Kong. It opened in February 1841, following the completion of Hong Kong's first reclamation project. It was then only 4 km long.

It was subsequently extended both eastwards and westwards and divided into three parts — Queen's Road East, Queen's Road Central and Queen's Road West.
