From Macau to Berea

When I got the acceptance letter, I went to reserve the plane ticket from HK (Kai Tak airport) to Berea, so that I could inform the college my arrival time. I had limited information for I knew no one in Berea nor any information I could get from the library.

I knew Berea only by chance. I knew it should be the one I wanted to go, thus I wrote and apply.

I knew it was a small town, a small college, and it was about 140 acres. The college told me that the nearest airport was Lexington, KY.

At that time, we didn't have Internet, and I had difficulties to image where and how was Berea. Now, it is totally different, one can get plenty of information over Internet.

Go back to my story, in that spring, I applied for my FI student visa, and went to the travel agency for the plane ticket, I told them my expected date to Lexington, they searched over their system, and told me that I needed to take several connecting flights and different airlines - something like that.

I was not smart enough at that time, as I booked a single trip ticket, thinking that I would not come back, only after I finished my four years study (single ticket is relatively expensive than a return ticket, I learned it later, I can use the return ticket in one year time or so).

My first time to Berea was really adventures - I had two big pieces of luggage, two friends and my brother helped me to take the luggage to the Macau Ferry Terminal, than S accompanied me to the HK airport, it was a night trip, as my flight was 8 in the morning.

During the night, the airport was quite slow, it was the last day of August.

My first stop was Tokyo, however due to some reasons, it was delayed. I got some hints from a HK lady who sat next to me in the cabin from HK to Tokyo, for my college study, as we were both heading to US for further education, though our final destinations were different.

I lined up to the counter in Tokyo and looked for assistance, but the staff was busy, and her English was terrible - that 's why my first impression to Japan was not good.

As the flight was delayed, I needed to get my lunch in Tokyo airport - it was very expensive, for a poor student !!

After long waiting, I successfully got my way to the flight to US, then I was told that I needed to get all my luggage to pass the custom and went to the gate with the luggage for the fly - I was a little bit scared, I was late, I might not catch the original flight, because I wasted the time in Tokyo.

Still, I need to try, otherwise, I couldn't image what my first night in a strange city, and I didn't know whether the college staff would locate and wait for me!!

Back to the cabin, other than my expectation, it was not full, later, I knew that most of the college students went back in earlier time, not until the end of the vacation time.

I was lucky, I had one couple sat next to me, they talked to me a little bit, and told me later that they could got their seats upgraded, thus I could use their space and sleep - it was really a good experience - sleep like business class by occupying three seats for my first lonely long trip flight !!

Time passed, I eventually arrived Chicago airport.

Follow the crowds, I checked my luggage, unfortunately, I lost one, and the airport staff told me that they would send me once they located it.

No choice, I carried my only piece of luggage, and lined up in the custom.

It was a long line, I explained to the people in front, telling them I had a flight waiting for me. Very nice people, they let me go before them, and therefore, I could go straight to the immigrant officer.

The officer checked my passport, the F1 Visa as well as my I20 document, he asked me questions, and I answered, he wished me good luck for my study.

Then, I tried to locate the place and the gate for the flight to Lexington.

On my way, I tried to ask the airport staff for assistance, and they did help me to reach there.

The plane was a small plane, around 30-40 passengers ( in later year, I also got the chance to fly with a plane with only 8-12 seats in US).

I was the last one to enter the plane, only few seconds, the plane left for Lexington immediately.

I was kind of exhausted by my first stop to US - taking care of this and that. Lost one piece of luggage, but finally, I could make-up the time.

Though some unexpected things happened, I could still overcome.

It was really like a small challenge.

At that time, I knew that the road in front may not be easy, but I need to solve all kinds of problems, by MYSELF, this was my choice!!!

Placement Test

I didn't know what was that when I first arrived Berea.

For all the international students in Bera, we need to take the placement test to evaluate our standards in order to register for the different level of courses - in Math, English and the Physical Education.

As all the graduates in Berea should know how to swim, freshman should take the swimming test first; if one fails, he/she should take the basic swimming course any time in the college years.

I know how to swim, but I could not pass the test to swim 100 metres within certain time.

Therefore I was required to register the swimming course for my first semester. However, in my first lesson, the instructor told me to drop the course and register other one, as she said she only taught people knew nothing to swim.

I didn't do well for all the placement test ( I didn't prepare at all before leaving for States), even though for the Math.

That was why the first semester, I registered a math course which I found out quite easy. ( In my second year, I personally applied for the waiving test, in order to save my time to earn the requirements to register for higher level courses!!!)

Looking back, it was good for me to take an easy Math course in my first semester, as I could spend the time on other difficult subjects.

Host Family

That year, when I got the acceptance letter from Berea, I was so excited. The letter also informed that I may have a host family to help me out in states.

I was waiting and waiting, and at last I heard nothing.

As a result, I didn't have any host to pick me up in the airport, but two international students. They drove me back to the dorm, then, I need to get the way to survive.

For me, I need a very good adjustment for my first few days in States - my first dinner was cold drink with crackers from the vending machine, as I arrived on late afternoon.

Later years in Berea and now, I really know what are the differences for international students having host family, e.g.

Someone to pick you up when you arrive;
Someone help you to survive on the first few days of arrival;
Someone to give up rides for shopping;
Sometime to have meals together, especially thanksgiving, Christmas;
And most of all, to have cultural exchange!!

Dress Down and Dress Up

I do not have any sense in fashion, therefore, dressing to me is like part of my job, I dress for my work!! - Occassionally, I got this kind of similar compliments from my friends :(

When I was in college, I can dress casually all the time.

During summer, my dress code was T-shirts with shorts. In winters, I had sweaters, a very warm fur overcoat (a gift by air-mail from my high-school buddies) and jeans. They were pretty good enough as we had heater in the buildings.

In the American culture, most of time, I dressed down myself, I remember I only dressed up for few times, for the class presentation and on my graduation day.

To my roommate, she always dressed nicely, sometimes she dressed pretty skirt with high heel shoes and she wore make-up every day. Most of all, every Sunday morning, even thought it was snowing, she dressed up herself to go to church.

When she went out to church, though I was lying on my bed, I sometimes had a thought that it should be good to dress oneself properly, to enjoy the beautiful Sunday with wonderful people, on the early morning of the first day of the week, it was a good start.

It is the power of dress, it gives confidence and make oneself feel good.

For me, fashion is like a magazine, I can read but I can't understand.

I would look for clean, comfortable and warm clothing, for my leisure time.

Nevertheless, I think dress properly is very important, it is the way we match with the others - "When in Rome, do as the Romans do!"

And, sometimes, it is good to dress up, to make myself nicer, and have a enjoyable and wonderful dinner, with wonderful people.

Feel GOOD!

One Mouth, Two Ears

Thanks for the reminder - yes, I have two ears!!

One more thing:

Sight is more to be trusted than hearing.

Say "Hello"

Rua Farmosa

In Macau, under the influence of Portuguese cultures, we have plenty of beautiful street names, in Portuguese and Chinese.

"Rua Farmosa" is one of them, it means beautiful street, it is located near the central area, but not a main street nor busy street.

By reading the name, I would have a feeling of making myself prettier!!

Actually, for the past few years, a certain number of beauty shops like hair saloon, facial shops, boutiques have moved in, thus, making a street for the ladies to have a one-stop to beautify themselves!!!

It is always good to stay in the " Beautiful Street" , and also to have a beautiful mind!

Old Town Berea KY, US

When I was in Berea, in spring time, at the end of the day, I would like to walk around the campus, it was a simple and good exercie (Not in the winter, as the temperture was only 20-30F, and we had the indoor swimming pool and gym).

Sometimes, when I was free of projects, I also liked to walk down the hill, to the old town Berea, where there were some gift shops for the visitors.

I acted myself as visitor, to browse around the beautiful crafts, they were good for gifts!!

I also enjoyed the dogwood trees along the chestnut street, which is a long and main street on campus. Their white flowers are so beautiful.

However, it was very strange, I never saw any chestnut in this street, even though it is named chestnut, they planted the short dogwood trees.

Still, I remember my roommate once picked up some chestnuts somewhere in the campus for me, but I never did!!

Few pictures of the town:

Hollywood Movies

When I was in States, almost every Friday, no matter whether it was raining or snowing, I always went out to watch movies. Sometimes I stayed out late until midnight as there were double features.

Most of the movies were made in Hollywood, they were American movies.

This was one of the ways for me to pick up the American cultures, I could learn more in the movies, of their daily life and activities. I could not say all of them were good movies, as some of them may be mass production. But still, I enjoyed everything in the movies, the actors, their acting, the decoration, the design, the plot.....

Movie is an art, I should learn how to appreciate it, sometimes I discussed the plot with my friends. In addition of learning, I can relieve myself from the daily hectic studies.

Following are some of the movies which I can still remember their names :

Sleepless in Seattle
When Sally met Harry
Dances with Wolves
Bodyguard
Pretty Woman
The Silence of the Lambs
Unforgiven

I learned the method of appreciation.

As time passes, I also enjoy more of the international films, it is kind of culture appreciation.

Movie - Dances with Wolves

Try to get the list of my favorite movies, this is one of them, I remember that Kelven Costner was very handsome in this film ( by the time, he was young)!!

Plot Summary for

Dances with Wolves (1990)

John Dunbar is dubbed a hero after he accidentally leads Union troops to a victory during the Civil War. He requests a position on the western frontier, but finds it deserted. He soon finds out he is not alone, but meets a wolf he dubs "Two-socks" and a curious Indian tribe. Dunbar quickly makes friends with the tribe, and discovers a white woman who was raised by the Indians. He gradually earns the respect of these native people, and sheds his white-man's ways. Written by Greg Bole {bole@life.bio.sunysb.edu}

Having been sent to a remote outpost in the wilderness of the Dakota territory during the American Civil War, Lieutenant John Dunbar encounters, and is eventually accepted into, the local Sioux tribe. He is known as "Dances with Wolves" to them and as time passes he becomes enamoured by the beautiful "Stands With a Fist". Not soon after, the frontier becomes the frontier no more, and as the army advances on the plains, John must make a decision that will not only affect him, but also the lives of the natives he now calls his people. Movie - Children of Heaven 小鞋子

This is one of the good movies I watched before, I watched twice!! Story is pretty simple, but it tells something ! Synopsis (from Wiki) Ali takes his little sister Zahra's shoes to the shoemaker to be repaired, but loses them on the way home. The siblings decide to keep the predicament a secret from their parents, knowing that there is no money to buy a replacement pair and fearing that they will be punished. They devise a scheme to share Ali's sneakers: Zahra will wear them to school in the morning and hand them off to Ali at midday so he can attend afternoon classes. This uncomfortable arrangement leads to one adventure after another as they attempt to hide the plan from their parents and teachers, attend to their schoolwork and errands, and acquire a new pair of shoes for Zahra. Zahra sees the lost shoes on a schoolmate's feet, and follows her home, but the two soon become friends. Ali enters a high-profile children's footrace in the hope of receiving the third prize of a new pair of sneakers. He accidentally places first and wins another prize instead. The film ends with Zahra finding out that she will not get a new pair of shoes, but there is a quick shot of their father's bicycle at the end of the movie that shows what appears to be the red shoes Zahra had been focusing on earlier and another pair of white sneakers, presumably for Ali, whose old sneakers were torn from so much use. The film ends with the final shot showing blisters on Ali's feet. Some versions include an epilogue revealing that Ali eventually achieves the larger-scale success of having a racing career. Background and critical response The film was shot in Tehran. It was attempted to keep the filming secret in order to capture a more realistic image of the city. The production costs have been estimated at US$ 180,000. Children of Heaven premiered in February 1997 at the Teheran Fajr Film Festival and was awarded several national film awards. It started in the US on 22 January 1999, with a total US box office result of $930,000. After the film had become well-known worldwide due to the Oscar nomination, it was shown in several European, South American, and Asian countries between 1999 and 2001. Critical response to the film was very positive. Some critics compared it to Vittorio de Sica's 1948 Bicycle Thieves. The few negative voices found fault in a too simplistic storyline and unanswered questions in the movie. Roger Ebert's review in the Chicago Sun-Times called it "very nearly a perfect movie for children" that "lacks the cynicism and smart-mouth attitudes of so much American entertainment for kids and glows with a kind of good-hearted purity".[1] Awards In 1998, the film was the first Iranian film to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, but lost to the Italian film Life Is Beautiful by Roberto Benigni. It was successfully shown on numerous film festivals and won awards at the Fajr Film Festival, the World Film Festival, the Newport International Film Festival, the Warsaw International Film Festival, and the Singapore International Film Festival. It was nominated for the Jury's Grand Prize at the American Film Institute's festival.

Song - Up Where We belong

Who knows what tomorrow brings
In a world where few hearts survive
All I know is the way I feel
When its real I leep it alive
The road is long there are mountains in the way

Love lift us up where we belong
Where the eagles fly on a mountan high
Love lift us up where we belong
Far from the world below
Where the clear winds blow

Some hang on to usued to be
Live there life looking behind
All we have is here and now
All our lives out there to find
The road is long and there are mountains in my way
But we climb the stairs everyday

Chorus

Time goes by no time to cry
Just you and I alone

Chorus

Song - Diana

I'm so young and you're so old
This, my darling, I've been told
I don't care just what they say
'Cause forever I will pray
You and I will be as free
As the birds up in the trees
Oh, please stay by me, Diana

Thrills I get when you hold me close
Oh, my darling, you're the most
I love you but do you love me
Oh, Diana, can't you see
I love you with all my heart
And I hope we will never part
Oh, please stay with me, Diana

Oh, my darlin', oh, my lover
Tell me that there is no other
I love you with my heart
Oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh
Only you can take my heart
Only you can tear it apart
When you hold me in your loving arms
I can feel you giving all your charms
Hold me, darling, ho-ho hold me tight
Squeeze me baby with-a all your might
Oh, please stay with me, Diana
Oh, please, Diana
Oh, please, Diana
Oh, please, Diana

Song -

Song -

Song -

Song -

These few days, I can hear a familiar ad song - the Sunshine Lemon Tea,in TV after dinner time.

The melody of the song is very nice, though it is short, it brings a lot of good memories.

Even though the brand is old, but its spirit and the slogan are always fresh - everywhere there is sun shine !!

We should bear in mind all the time, this is our hope!!

Song - Someone's Watching Over Me

"Someone's Watching Over Me"

Found myself today
Oh I found myself and ran away
Something pulled me back
The voice of reason I forgot I had
All I know is you're not here to say
What you always used to say
But it's written in the sky tonight

So I won't give up
No I won't break down
Sooner than it seems life turns around
And I will be strong
Even if it all goes wrong
When I'm standing in the dark I'll still believe
Someone's watching over me

Seen that ray of light
And it's shining on my destiny
Shining all the time
And I wont be afraid
To follow everywhere it's taking me
All I know is yesterday is gone
And right now I belong
To this moment to my dreams

So I won't give up
No I won't break down
Sooner than it seems life turns around
And I will be strong
Even if it all goes wrong
When I'm standing in the dark I'll still believe
Someone's watching over me

It doesn't matter what people say
And it doesn't matter how long it takes
Believe in yourself and you'll fly high
And it only matters how true you are
Be true to yourself and follow your heart

So I won't give up
No I won't break down
Sooner than it seems life turns around
And I will be strong
Even if it all goes wrong
When I'm standing in the dark I'll still believe
That I won't give up
No I won't break down
Sooner than it seems life turns around
And I will be strong
Even when it all goes wrong
When I'm standing in the dark I'll still believe
That someone's watching over
Someone's watching over
Someone's watching over me

Someone's watching over me

Song - No Matter What

Boyzone Andrew Lloyd Webber (music)/Jim Steinman(lyrics)

No matter what they tell us
No matter what they do
No matter what they teach us
What we believe is true

No matter what they call us
However they attack
No matter where they take us
We'll find our own way back

I can't deny what I believe
I can't be what I'm not
I know I'll love forever
I know, no matter what

If only tears were laughter
If only night was day
If only prayers were answered
Then we would hear God say

No matter what they tell you
No matter what they do
No matter what they teach you
What you believe is true

And I will keep you safe and strong
And sheltered from the storm
No matter where it's barren
A dream is being born

No matter who they follow
No matter where they lead
No matter how they judge us
I'll be everyone you need

No matter if the sun don't shine
Or if the skies are blue
No matter what the end is
My life began with you

I can't deny what I believe
I can't be what I'm not
I know, I know
I know this love's forever
That's all that matters now
No matter what

Song - Never Had a Dream Come True

Ooh...

Everybody's got something they had to leave behind
One regret from yesterday that just seems to grow with time
There's no use looking back or wondering (or wondering)
How it could be now or neither been (or neither been)
All this I know but still I can't find ways to let you go

Chorus
I never had a dream come true
Till that day that I found you
Even though I pretend that I've moved on
You'll always be my baby
I never found the words to say
You're the one I think about each day
And I know no matter where love takes me to
A part of me will always be with you

Somewhere in my memory I lost all sense of time
Amd tomorrow can never be
'Cause yesterday is all that fills my mind
There's no use looking back or wondering
How it should be now or neither been (or neither been)
Oh this I know but still I can't find ways to let you go

Chorus

You'll always be the dream that fills my head
(Yes you will, say you will, you know you will, baby)
You'll always be the one I know (I'll never forget)
There's no use looking back or wondering (or wondering)
Because love is a strange and funny thing
No matter how I try and try
I just can't say goodbye
No no no no

Chorus

A part of me will always be with you...

Song - I Will Survive

Gloria Gaynor
I Will Survive Lyrics

First I was afraid
I was petrified
Kept thinking I could never live
without you by my side
But I spent so many nights
thinking how you did me wrong
I grew strong
I learned how to carry on
and so you're back
from outer space
I just walked in to find you here
with that sad look upon your face
I should have changed my stupid lock
I should have made you leave your key
If I had known for just one second
you'd be back to bother me

Go on now go walk out the door
just turn around now
'cause you're not welcome anymore
weren't you the one who tried to hurt me with goodbye
you think I'd crumble
you think I'd lay down and die
Oh no, not I
I will survive
as long as i know how to love
I know I will stay alive
I've got all my life to live
I've got all my love to give
and I'll survive
I will survive

It took all the strength I had
not to fall apart
kept trying hard to mend
the pieces of my broken heart
and I spent oh so many nights
just feeling sorry for myself
I used to cry
Now I hold my head up high
and you see me
somebody new
I'm not that chained up little person
still in love with you
and so you felt like dropping in
and just expect me to be free
now I'm saving all my loving
for someone who's loving me

Song - Heaven

Bryan Adams - Heaven lyrics

Oh - thinkin' about all our younger years
There was only you and me
We were young and wild and free

Now nothin' can take you away from me
We bin down that road before
But that's over now
You keep me comin' back for more

Baby you're all that I want
When you're lyin' here in my arms
I'm findin' it hard to believe
We're in heaven
And love is all that I need
And I found it there in your heart
It isn't too hard to see
We're in heaven

Oh - once in your life you find someone
Who will turn your world around
Bring you up when you're feelin' down

Ya - nothin' could change what you mean to me
Oh there's lots that I could say
But just hold me now
Cause our love will light the way

N' baby you're all that I want
When you're lyin' here in my arms
I'm findin' it hard to believe
We're in heaven
And love is all that I need
And I found it there in your heart
It isn't too hard to see
We're in heaven

I've bin waitin' for so long
For something to arrive
For love to come along

Now our dreams are comin' true
Through the good times and the bad
Ya - I'll be standin' there by you

Song - Here I Am

Bryan Adams - Here I Am lyrics

Here I am - this is me
There's no where else on earth I'd rather be
Here I am - it's just me and you
And tonight we make our dreams come true

It's a new world - it's a new start
It's alive with the beating of young hearts
It's a new day - it's a new plan
I've been waiting for you
Here I am

Here we are - we've just begun
And after all this time - our time has come
Ya here we are - still goin' strong
Right here in the place where we belong

Chorus X1

Here I am - this is me
There's no where else on earth I'd rather be
Here I am - it's just me and you
And tonight we make our dreams come true

Chorus X2

Here I am - next to you
And suddenly the world is all brand new
Here I am - where I'm gonna stay
Now there's nothin standin in our way
Here I am - this is me

Song - Born to Fly

I've been telling my dreams to the scarecrow
About the places that I'd like to see
I say, "friend do you think I'll ever get there?"
Oh, but he just stands there smilin' back at me
So I confessed my sins to the preacher
About the love I've been prayin' to find
Is there a brown-eyed boy in my future, yeah
And he says, "girl, you've got nothin' but time."

But how do you wait for heaven?
And who has that much time?
And how do you keep your feet on the ground
When you know that you were born,
You were born to fly

My daddy he is grounded like the oak tree
My momma she is steady as the sun
Oh, you know I love my folks
But I keep starin' down the road
Just lookin' for my one chance to run
Hey, cause I will soar away like a blackbird
I will blow in the wind like a seed
I will plant my heart in the garden of my dreams
And I will grow up where I wander wild and free

Oh, How do you wait for heaven?
And who has that much time?
And how do you keep your feet on the ground
When you know, that you were born?
You were born, yeah, you were born to fly

So how do you wait for heaven?
And who has that much time?
And how do you keep your feet on the ground
When you know, that you were born
You were born to fly, yeah

You were born to fly, fly, fly, fly, hey
Oh, oh

Song - Breakaway

Songwriters: Gerrard, Matthew; Benenate, Bridget; Lavigne, Avril Ramona

Grew up in a small town
And when the rain would fall down
I'd just stare out my window
Dreaming of what could be
And if I'd end up happy
I would pray (I would pray)

Trying hard to reach out
But when I tried to speak out
Felt like no one could hear me
Wanted to belong here
But something felt so wrong here
So I'd pray I could break away

I'll spread my wings and I'll learn how to fly
I'll do what it takes till I touch the sky
And I'll make a wish
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway
Out of the darkness and into the sun
But I won't forget all the ones that I love
I'll take a risk
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway

Wanna feel the warm breeze
Sleep under a palm tree
Feel the rush of the ocean
Get on board a fast train
Travel on a jet plane, far away (I will)
And breakaway

I'll spread my wings and I'll learn how to fly
I'll do what it takes till I touch the sky,
And I'll make a wish
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway
Out of the darkness and into the sun
I won't forget all the ones that I love
I gotta take a risk
Take a chance
Make a change
and breakaway

Buildings with a hundred floors
Swinging 'round revolving doors
Maybe I don't know where they'll take me, but
Gotta keep moving on, moving on
Fly away, breakaway

I'll spread my wings
And I'll learn how to fly
Though it's not easy to tell you goodbye
I gotta take a risk
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway
Out of the darkness and into the sun
But I won't forget the place I come from
I gotta take a risk
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway, breakaway, breakaway

Song - It's My Life

This ain't a song for the broken-hearted
No silent prayer for the faith-departed
I ain't gonna be just a face in the crowd
You're gonna hear my voice
When I shout it out loud

It's my life
It's now or never
I ain't gonna live forever
I just want to live while I'm alive
It's my life
My heart is like an open highway
Like Frankie said
I did it my way
I just wanna live while I'm alive
It's my life

This is for the ones who stood their ground
For Tommy and Gina who never backed down
Tomorrow's getting harder make no mistake
Luck ain't even lucky
Got to make your own brakes

It's my life
And it's now or never
I ain't gonna live forever
I just want to live while I'm alive
It's my life
My heart is like an open highway
Like Frankie said
I did it my way
I just want to live while I'm alive
'Cause it's my life

Better stand tall when they're calling you out
Don't bend, don't break, baby, don't back down

It's my life
And it's now or never
'Cause I ain't gonna live forever
I just want to live while I'm alive
It's my life
My heart is like an open highway
Like Frankie said
I did it my way
I just want to live while I'm alive

It's my life
And it's now or never
'Cause I ain't gonna live forever
I just want to live while I'm alive
It's my life
My heart is like an open highway
Like Frankie said
I did it my way
I just want to live while I'm alive
'Cause it's my life!

Song - Killing Me Softly

Artist : Frank Sinatra Song : Killing Me Softly

Frank Sinatra- Killing Me Softly

I heard she sang a good song,
I heard she had a style.
And so I came to see her and listen for a while.
And there she was this young girl,
a stranger to my eyes.
Strumming my pain with her fingers,
singing my life with her words,
killing me softly with her song,
killing me softly with her song,
telling my whole life with her words,
killing me softly with her song
I felt all flushed with fever,
embarrassed by the crowd,
I felt she found my letters and read each one out loud.
I prayed that she would finish but she just kept right on.
Strumming my pain with her fingers,
singing my life with her words,
killing me softly with her song,
killing me softly with her song,
telling my whole life with her words,
killing me softly with her song
She sang as if he knew me in all my dark despair and then she looked right
through me as if I wasn't there.
But she just came to singing,
singing clear and strong.
Strumming my pain with her fingers,
singing my life with her words,
killing me softly with her song,
killing me softly with her song,
telling my whole life with her words,
killing me softly with her song

Song - Time After Time

Artist : Frank Sinatra Song : Time After Time Writer(s): cahn/styne

What good are words I say to you?
They can’t convey to you what’s in my heart
If you could hear instead
The things I’ve left unsaid

Time after time
I tell myself that i’m
So lucky to be loving you

So lucky to be
The one you run to see
In the evening, when the day is through

I only know what I know
The passing years will show
You’ve kept my love so young, so new

And time after time
You’ll hear me say that i’m
So lucky to be loving you

Song - High Hopes

Next time your found, with your chin on the
ground
There a lot to be learned, so look around

Just what makes that little old ant
Think he’ll move that rubber tree plant
Anyone knows an ant, can’t
Move a rubber tree plant

But he’s got high hopes, he’s got high hopes
He’s got high apple pie, in the sky hopes

So any time your gettin’ low
’stead of lettin’ go
Just remember that ant
Oops there goes another rubber tree plant

When troubles call, and your back’s to the wall
There a lot to be learned, that wall could fall

Once there was a silly old ram
Thought he’d punch a hole in a dam
No one could make that ram, scram
He kept buttin’ that dam

’cause he had high hopes, he had high hopes
He had high apple pie, in the sky hopes

So any time your feelin’ bad
’stead of feelin’ sad
Just remember that ram
Oops there goes a billion kilowatt dam

All problems just a toy balloon
They’ll be bursted soon
They’re just bound to go pop
Oops there goes another problem kerplop

Song - Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now

Looking in your eyes I see a paradise
This world that I found is too good to be true
Standing here beside you, want so much to give you
This love in my heart that I'm feeling for you

Let 'em say we're crazy, don't care 'bout that
Put your hand in my hand baby, don't ever look back
Let the world around us just fall apart
Baby, we can make it if we're heart to heart

And we can build this dream together, standing strong forever
Nothing's gonna stop us now
And if this world runs out of lovers, we'll still have each other
Nothing's gonna stop us, nothing's gonna stop us now
Woh woh oh

I'm so glad I found you, I'm not gonna lose you
Whatever it takes, I will stay here with you
Take it to the good times, see it through the bad times
Whatever it takes is what I'm gonna do

Let 'em say we're crazy, what do they know
Put your arms around me baby, don't ever let go
Let the world around us just fall apart
Baby, we can make it if we're heart to heart

And we can build this dream together, standing strong forever
Nothing's gonna stop us now
And if this world runs out of lovers, we'll still have each other
Nothing's gonna stop us, nothing's gonna stop us

Ooh, all that I need is you
All that I ever need
And all that I want to do
Is hold you forever, forever and ever

And we can build this dream together, standing strong forever
Nothing's gonna stop us now
And if this world runs out of lovers, we'll still have each other
Nothing's gonna stop us, nothing's gonna stop us
Woh oh oh-oh-oh
Nothing's gonna stop us, nothing's gonna stop us now
Hey baby

And we can build this dream together, standing strong forever
Nothing's gonna stop us now
And if this world runs out of lovers, we'll still have each other
Nothing's gonna stop us, nothing's gonna stop us now

Song - Sailing

Christopher Cross - Sailing lyrics

It's not far down to paradise
At least it's not for me
And if the wind is right you can sail away
And find tranquility
The canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe me

It's not far to never never land
No reason to pretend
And if the wind is right you can find the joy
Of innocence again
The canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe me

Sailing
Takes me away
To where I've always heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
And soon I will be free

Fantasy
It gets the best of me
When I'm sailing
All caught up in the reverie
Every word is a symphony
Won't you believe me

It's not far back to sanity
At least it's not for me
And when the wind is right you can sail away
And find serenity
The canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe me

Song - I Believe I Can Fly

"I Believe I Can Fly"

I used to think that I could not go on
And life was nothing but an awful song
But now I know the meaning of true love
I'm leaning on the everlasting arms

If I can see it, then I can do it
If I just believe it, there's nothing to it

[1]
I believe I can fly
I believe I can touch the sky
I think about it every night and day
Spread my wings and fly away
I believe I can soar
I see me running through that open door
I believe I can fly
I believe I can fly
I believe I can fly

See I was on the verge of breaking down
Sometimes silence can seem so loud
There are miracles in life I must achieve
But first I know it starts inside of me, oh

If I can see it, then I can do it
If I just believe it, there's nothing to it

[Repeat 1]

Hey, cause I believe in me, oh

If I can see it, then I can do it
If I just believe it, there's nothing to it

[Repeat 1]

Hey, if I just spread my wings
I can fly
I can fly
I can fly, hey
If I just spread my wings
I can fly
Fly-eye-eye

Song - When You Believe

Mariah Carey

"When You Believe"

Many nights we've prayed
With no proof anyone could hear
In our hearts a hopefull song
We barely understood

Now we are not afraid
Although we know there's much to fear
We were moving mountains long
Before we knew we could

There can be miracles, when you believe
Though hope is frail, it's hard to kill
Who knows what miracles you can achieve
When you believe, somehow you will
You will when you believe

In this time of fear
When prayers so often prove(s) in vain
Hope seems like the summer birds
Too swiftly flown away

Yet now I'm standing here
My heart's so full I can't explain
Seeking faith and speaking words
I never thought I'd say

There can be miracles, when you believe
Though hope is frail, it's hard to kill
Who knows what miracles you can achieve
When you believe, somehow you will
You will when you believe

They don't (always happen) when you ask
(Oh)
And it's easy to give in to your fears
(Oh...Ohhhh)
But when you're blinded by your pain
Can't see your way straight throught the rain
(A small but )still resilient voice
Says (hope is very near)
(Ohhh)

There can be miracles
(Miracles)
When you believe
(Lord, when you believe)
Though hope is frail
(Though hope is frail)
It's hard to kill
(Hard to kill, Ohhh)
Who knows what miracles, you can achieve
When you believe, somehow you will(somehow, somehow, somehow)
somehow you will
You will when you believe

You will when you
You will when you believe
Just believe...in your heart
Just believe
You will when you believe~

Song - Dream On

Every time that I look in the mirror
All these lines on my face getting clearer
The past is gone
It went by, like dusk to dawn
Isn't that the way
Everybody's got their dues in life to pay

Yeah, I know nobody knows
Where it comes and where it goes
I know it's everybody's sin
You got to lose to know how to win

Half my life
Is in books' written pages
Lived and learned from fools and
From sages
You know it's true
All the things come back to you

Sing with me, sing for the year
Sing for the laugh, sing for the tears
Sing with me, if it's just for today
Maybe tomorrow, the good lord will take you away, yeah

Yeah, sing with me, sing for the year
Sing for the laugh, sing for the tear
Sing with me, if it's just for today
Maybe tomorrow, the good Lord will take you away

Dream On Dream On Dream On
Dream until the dream come true
Dream On Dream On Dream On
Dream until your dream comes true
Dream On Dream On Dream On
Dream On Dream On
Dream On Dream On

Sing with me, sing for the year
Sing for the laugh, sing for the tear
Sing with me, if it's just for today
Maybe tomorrow, the good Lord will take you away
Sing with me, sing for the year
Sing for the laugh, sing for the tear
Sing with me, if it's just for today
Maybe tomorrow, the good Lord will take you away...

Song -

What did they say?

I always listen some of the following sayings. For me, they tell nothing and they are meanlingless:

For the fruit hawkers : Today, all the oranges are very fresh and good => which day they sell the unfresh food?

For the property agents, they just tell you the good things, but hide the bad things, e.g.

The building is good located => the house may be very old, dark or it is too small, or it is in the busy district, noisy and dusty all the time.

The apartment has good views =>it is bad located or it is too small, also, one is not going to enjoy the views, but utilise and live inside the apartment.

The flat is very big => but it is not well utilized the space

The environemnt is quite => yes, but it may not be safe for going out at nights?

My Observation in Gongbei ( Zhuhai of China)

In China, I can always discover new things and learn a lot.

For example, last week I went to Gongbei, I saw the ATM machines in the street were surrounded by an iron gate. Inside the tiny space, there was a lock for the customer to lock himself/herself in.

This arrangement obviously was to solve the problem of unsafety withdrawl money from the street's ATM. However I think if the customer is identified as target people to rob, he will be followed by the thiefs anyway.

The lesson to be learned is: don't use the ATM in Gongbei area.

The other lesson I learned is also in Gongbei, sometimes one can gain by just follow the crowds.
I didn't go to China very often, but I remember that with the basement mall, most of time people use the subway to cross the streets in the area of Gongbei.

But lately, I could see most of the people use the street cross-roads instead. With my observation, I realise that the custom made the entrance down to the far end of the big square, that is, if people go up from the basement mall, one has to walk a long way to enter the queue in order to get in the custom hall.

Therefore, by follow the walking direction of the crowds, one can save the time and avoid doing unnecessary exercise!!!

McDonald's Restaurant

Every morning, on my way to office, I always pass by the McDonald's of Largo de Senado.

Actually, the restaurant does not attract to me very much. As I mentioned before, I don't like the burger in the McDonald, but only the egg sausage muffin.

However, the logo of golden arches always reminds me the kind of American culture I experienced in States.

One of my deepest impressions was on a cold winter early morning, we had been driving for the whole night in the highway, we saw the golden arch far away, and we were so excited to stop by the restaurant to have an early warm breakfast!!!

For the restaurants, all customers can expect the standard menus, kind of fresh and quality (they claimed)food, standard prices, the cleanliness, the politeness, comfortable sitting environment, drive-through take away counter service all over the States. For kids, some of the restaurants even provide children playground for their activities.

My American friends always said that one could rely on the food in McDonald, for they have standard procedures to handle the food, but one could not expect great surprise except feeding the stomach full. Some even said that the meat was too dry and it didn't have much meat juice. I quite agreed with that long long time ago.

After leaving US, no matter how many countries I have been visited, and the cities I travelled, I can always see the McDonald's restaurants. But I seldom visit McDonald in other countries, for I think I would like to enjoy different places' cultures by eating in the typical restaurants locally.

I am kind of holding my view on globalisation, even though I agree that people in the world can enjoy the comparative advantages, by doing all kinds of trade and investment, for the cultural aspect, I think we need to have differentiation.

McDonald's, it is only for the Americans!!

Marjorie Yang Mun-tak

Marjorie Yang

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Marjorie Yang Mun-tak (Traditional Chinese: 楊敏德; born 1952, Hong Kong) is a non-official member of the Executive Council of Hong Kong.[1]

She is Chairwoman of the Esquel Group, the world's biggest cotton shirt-maker, which was founded by her father in 1978, as well as independent non-executive director of HSBC, Swire Pacific and Novartis AG.[2] She is a Hong Kong Member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. Marjorie Yang is vice-chairman of the Asia Business Council.

Biography
Yang earned a B.Sc. degree in Mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an M.B.A. degree from Harvard Business School.[3] Her first career, after graduation, was in investment banking at First Boston.[2] In 1995, after her father, Yang Yuan-loong, was diagnosed with cancer, she returned to take the helm of Esquel.

Marriage
She was once married to Dickson Poon, the chairman of Dickson Concepts.[4]

HONG KONG'S MARJORIE YANG (int'l edition)
Don't tell Marjorie Yang that garment manufacturing is a sunset industry. She doesn't buy it. As chairman of the Esquel Group of Companies, a privately held, $400 million Hong Kong textile company started by her father in 1978, the 45-year-old Yang offers top-notch clothing to designer-label retailers. But rather than simple garment contracting, her company provides everything from design work to production to packaging ideas, working with customers from beginning to end to give them exactly what they want. To survive in the global economy, more Asian companies must adopt Yang's blend of production and services.

Yang has a long list of world-class clients to back up her claims. Tommy Hilfiger, Abercrombie & Fitch, Nordstrom, Marks & Spencer, and others are regular buyers of Esquel's cotton apparel. Yang owns plants in China, Jamaica, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka, and she recently spent $50 million for a cotton farm and 30,000 spindles in western China's Xinjiang province. Yang's company even makes its own accessories.

By owning the entire process, Yang believes she can guarantee a superior product that customers will pay a premium for. For dress shirts, for instance, Ralph Lauren wanted a pearl-type button that wouldn't crack. Yang's company devised one made partly of plastic that kept the sheen of a pearl. ''We're a one-stop shop,'' Yang says at her cluttered headquarters, where sales staff and designers buzz in and out of fabric libraries and showrooms.

As a young woman, Yang had no intention of going into the family business. She wanted to be an investment banker when she enrolled at Massachusetts Institute of Technology to study math in 1970. Then she went for an MBA at Harvard business school, where men outnumbered women 8 to 1. ''I never felt bullied,'' she says, referring to recent reports of sexual harassment there. After graduation, she worked for an investment bank in New York, where she felt like ''master of the universe.'' A year later, in 1995, her father got cancer, so Yang returned to Hong Kong to help out--and has never looked back.

''OVERBOOKED.'' Yang credits her father, Y.L. Yang, who has a degree in textile chemistry and still works part-time, with making Esquel the success it is today. But she is the one who brought in modern management and the latest technology. ''I spend a lot of time cultivating people, recruiting them, and doing career development,'' she says. That hasn't been easy in Hong Kong, where graduates preferred to go into the highly speculative--but once lucrative--property and finance markets rather than industry. In recent years, she has been recruiting in China. She'll pay for talent, but she'll also ''sack people who don't live up to the standard.''

The Asian crisis, Yang says, hasn't hurt the company. With about 85% of her goods going to the robust U.S. market, orders are stronger than ever. ''We're overbooked for the upcoming season,'' she says. She also believes that the downturn spells opportunity. Asians who once craved Italian designer labels may now opt for lower-priced, quality goods made in other countries. Her team has developed a men's all-cotton dress shirt for Marks & Spencer in Hong Kong that's far less costly than the polyester-and-cotton one the company was making in Europe. And Nike, which has been under fire for worker abuses in Asia, has now turned to the reputable Esquel for some of its men's fashion.

At the office, Yang is no fashion plate. She prefers to wear jeans and no make-up. But she can look glamorous as well. Photos of Yang, who was once married to upscale retailer Dickson Poon, can often be seen in the society column.

Will Yang take the company public? Probably not. She wants to continue investing in Esquel's growth rather than worry about quarterly returns. ''Shareholders would have thought I was crazy going into farming in Xinjiang,'' she says. With dreams of expanding more aggressively into women's clothing and doing printing on fabrics, Yang's full-service company shows how textiles are hardly an industry of the past.

(2000.10.21)

http://www.people.com.cn/BIG5/paper53/1734/280130.html

Song - Endless Love

My love,
There's only you in my life
The only thing that's right

My first love, (yeah)
You're every breath that I take
You're every step I make

And I
(And I-I-I)
I want to share
All my love with you
No one else will do...
(uuuuuh uuuh)

And your eyes
Your eyes, your eyes
They tell me how much you care
Ooh yes, you will always be
My endless love

Two hearts,
Two hearts that beat as one
Our lives have just begun

And Forever
(Forever)
I'll hold you close in my arms
I can't resist your charms
(no no no no noooo)

And love
and, love
I'll be a fool
For you,
(noney) I'm sure
You know I don't mind
Oh, you know I don't mind

'Cause baby you,
(baby baby baby baby)
You mean the world to me
Oh
I know
I've found in you
My endless love

yeee ee eeeee
Oooh-woow
do do do do do
do do do do do
do do doo doo

Oooh, and love
Oh, love
I'll be that fool
For you,
I'm sure
That You know I don't mind
Oh you know-
I don't mind

And, YES
You'll be the only one
'Cause no one no one can deny
This love I have inside
And I'll give it all to you
My love
My love, my love
My endless love

Movie - Endless Love

This is my first American romantic drama I watched in cinema. I still remembered in that cinema (no longer existed now), K took our high school buddies to enjoy this movie, he was so nice to us:).

At that time, I also got the chance to watch a lot of movies in this cinema - Endless love, ET...... I need to get my memories back !! But this movie is easy to remember, for the song is good listening, the actress was beautiful, and I still remembered their names in the movie - Jade and David.

From wiki.

Endless Love is a 1981 American romantic drama film directed by Franco Zeffirelli, starring Brooke Shields and Martin Hewitt. The screenplay by Judith Rascoe was adapted from the novel by Scott Spencer. The original music score was composed by Jonathan Tunick.

It was the third highest publicity film of Brooke Shields after Pretty Baby and The Blue Lagoon. Given the somewhat high critical opinion of Franco Zeffirelli and the source novel, the film was considered especially disappointing, although there was advance feeling that the sensibilities of Zeffirelli were a poor match for this book.

Plot summary
In suburban Chicago, Jade Butterfield and David Axelrod, both teenagers, fall in love. Their consuming, passionate love becomes dangerously obsessive, especially for David. Jade's family is known in their community for a bohemian lifestyle; they allow the two to make love in Jade's bedroom. In contrast to the openness of her family, David's home life is dull; his parents are radical political activists who ignore him. One night, Jade's mother, Ann sneaks downstairs and, upon seeing Jade and David make love in her living room, she starts living vicariously. Jade's father, Hugh, watches the couple with increasing unease. Eventually, he catches her in the act of trying to steal a sleeping pill so that she can get some sleep and realises that her regular sexual encounters with David are depriving her of sleep and badly affecting her grades at school. Subsequently, he firmly tries to persuade David to stop seeing Jade until the start of the school holidays in a month's time. Although David is heavily opposed to this idea, Ann gently coaxes him into agreeing, telling him not to let her husband "do something he'll regret". Not long later, David accidentally burns down the Butterfields' house. For this, he is sent to a mental hospital for the next two years and is forbidden to contact Jade ever again.

When David is released on parole, he goes to look for Jade and remains obsessed with her. In Manhattan, Jade's mother tries to seduce David, but he refuses and tells her that he can make love only with Jade. In a chance meeting, Jade's father is hit and killed by a car after running into the street to chase after David. Later, Jade goes to see David to bid her goodbyes but David doesn't let her go and Jade admits that she still loves him. The two rejoin their love together. When Keith tells David and Jade to come downstairs, he tells Jade that David is at fault for their father's death. Jade refuses to believe this, and talks to David for the truth. David tries to explain to Jade that this was an accident, but when his first words come out, Jade is so shocked that she won't listen and doesn't get a chance to hear the truth. Keith pulls David over and fights with him through the motel, and David is arrested by the police. Sent to prison, David seems doomed never to see his beloved again. Jade, though, comes to realize that no one will ever love her like David does and goes to him.

Movie - The Joy Luck Club

When I was in States, S recommended me to read this novel or watched the movie, but I could not get the chance.

Until I came back, I saw this movie for few times, and I really like it very much, as I also found out my difficulties on the relationship with my mother.

No matter what, this is past tense now, for she is no longer in the world!!

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Joy Luck Club is a 1993 American film about the relationships between Chinese-American women and their Chinese mothers. It is based on the 1989 novel of the same name by Amy Tan, who co-wrote the screenplay with Ronald Bass. The film was produced by Oliver Stone and directed by Wayne Wang. The cast is notable for consisting primarily of Asian American women.

Plot
Four older women, all Chinese immigrants living in San Francisco, meet regularly to play mah-jong, eat, and tell stories. Each of these women has an adult Chinese-American daughter. The film reveals the hidden pasts of the older women and explores cultural conflict and the relationships between mothers and daughters. The film is structured as a series of vignettes told from the perspectives of the different women.

Movie - Green Card

This movie was belonged to 90', I watched it on a cold Friday night when I was a college student - I didn't have a green card, but I was in a cosmopolitan environment, I had a deep feeling of people obtaining the Green Card.

It was really a good and romantic movie.

I searched the summary of the movie over Internet as follows:

George Faure is a Frenchman who has been offered a job in the U.S. But in order to get the job he must obtain a work permit - green card, and the easiest way is to marry an American. Bronte Parrish is a New Yorker who is a keen horticulturist and just found the perfect flat with its own greenhouse. Unfortunately the flat is for married couples only. A marriage of convenience seems the ideal solution to both problems. To convince the immigration officers they are married for love, they must move in with each other. As the mismatched couple attempt to cope with life together, they start to fall in love.

Little Kid to go to School

My youngest niece, who has celebrated her 3 years old birthday two weeks ago, excited told me over the phone that she started to go to school.

Though I can't see her face, I can really share her joy!!

She is extremely happy to start the school life, hope that she can find a lot of wonderful moment during her study!

Fish Soup Pasta

The little eating shop is in the Areia Preta Area. Many students and the workers like to have their famous noodles for breakfast, lunch and tea. It is always crowded there.

For me, I like to eat two bowls of different kinds of pasta/noodles for lunch, but I seldom go to that area.

I just miss the noodles in this shop.

The soup is really hot and delicious, with a lot of fresh ingredients, I consider this place is the best one of this kind - I like their way to prepare the soup, with a lot of fishes, beans, onions, and a rich favour of taste. I can't compare this with the other shop!!

I also like the noodles with the chicken in coconut juice - I am really miss the food!!
