18 Memory Tricks You Need to Know.

by Reader's Digest Magazine, on Thu Jun 17, 2010 7:13am »By Patricia Curtis

Can't remember where you put your glasses? Blanked on your new colleague's name? "Forgetting these types of things is a sign of how busy we are," says Zaldy S. Tan, MD, director of the Memory Disorders Clinic at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. "When we're not paying good attention, the memories we form aren't very robust, and we have a problem retrieving the information later."

The key, says Harry Lorayne, author of Ageless Memory: Simple Secrets for Keeping Your Brain Young, is to get your brain in shape. "We exercise our bodies, but what good is that great body if you don't have the mental capabilities to go with it?" Sure, you could write everything down, keep organized lists and leave electronic notes on your BlackBerry, cell phone or PDA. But when you don't have access to those aids, or if you want to strengthen your brain, try these expert-recommended strategies to help you remember.

Brain Freeze: "What the heck is his name?"

1. Pay attention. When you're introduced to someone, really listen to the person's name. Then, to get a better grasp, picture the spelling. Ask, "Is that Kathy with a K or a C?" Make a remark about the name to help lock it in ("Oh, Carpenter -- that was my childhood best friend's last name"), and use the name a few times during the conversation and when you say goodbye.

2. Visualize the name. For hard-to-remember monikers (Bentavegna, Wobbekind), make the name meaningful. For Bentavegna, maybe you think of a bent weather vane. Picture it. Then look at the person, choose an outstanding feature (bushy eyebrows, green eyes) and tie the name to the face. If Mr. Bentavegna has a big nose, picture a bent weather vane instead of his nose. The sillier the image, the better.

3. Create memorable associations. Picture Joe Everett standing atop Mount Everest. If you want to remember that Erin Curtis is the CEO of an architectural firm, imagine her curtsying in front of a large building, suggests Gini Graham Scott, PhD, author of 30 Days to a More Powerful Memory.

4. Cheat a little. Supplement these tips with some more concrete actions. When you get a business card, after the meeting, jot down a few notes on the back of the card ("red glasses, lives in Springfield, went to my alma mater") to help you out when you need a reminder.

Brain Freeze: "Where in the world did I leave my glasses?"

5. Give a play-by-play. Pay attention to what you're doing as you place your glasses on the end table. Remind yourself, "I'm putting my keys in my coat pocket," so you have a clear memory of doing it, says Scott.

7. Make it a habit. Put a small basket on a side table. Train yourself to put your keys, glasses, cell phone or any other object you frequently use (or misplace) in the basket -- every time.

Brain Freeze: "What else was I supposed to do today?"

8. Start a ritual. To remind yourself of a chore (write a thank-you note, go to the dry cleaner), give yourself an unusual physical reminder. You expect to see your bills on your desk, so leaving them there won't necessarily remind you to pay them. But place a shoe or a piece of fruit on the stack of bills, and later, when you spot the out-of-place object, you'll remember to take care of them, says Carol Vorderman, author of Super Brain: 101 Easy Ways to a More Agile Mind.

9. Sing it. To remember a small group of items (a grocery list, phone number, list of names, to-do list), adapt it to a well-known song, says Vorderman. Try "peanut butter, milk and eggs" to the tune of "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star," "Happy Birthday" or even nursery rhymes.

10. Try mnemonic devices. Many of us learned "ROY G BIV" to remember the colors of the rainbow, or "Every Good Boy Deserves Favors" to learn musical notes. Make up your own device to memorize names (Suzanne's kids are Adam, Patrick and Elizabeth, or "APE"), lists (milk, eggs, tomatoes, soda, or "METS") or computer commands (to shut down your PC, hit Control+Alt+Delete, or "CAD").

11. Use your body. When you have no pen or paper and are making a mental grocery or to-do list, remember it according to major body parts, says Scott. Start at your feet and work your way up. So if you have to buy glue, cat food, broccoli, chicken, grapes and toothpaste, you might picture your foot stuck in glue, a cat on your knee looking for food, a stalk of broccoli sticking out of your pants pocket, a chicken pecking at your belly button, a bunch of grapes hanging from your chest and a toothbrush in your mouth.

Enhance your IQ with our new Word Power game!

12. Go Roman. With the Roman room technique, you associate your grocery, to-do or party-invite list with the rooms of your house or the layout of your office, garden or route to work. Again, the zanier the association, the more likely you'll remember it, says Scott. Imagine apples hanging from the chandelier in your foyer, spilled cereal all over the living room couch, shampoo bubbles overflowing in the kitchen sink and cheese on your bedspread.

Brain Freeze: "What's my password for this website?"

13. Shape your numbers. Assign a shape to each number: 0 looks like a ball or ring; 1 is a pen; 2 is a swan; 3 looks like handcuffs; 4 is a sailboat; 5, a pregnant woman; 6, a pipe; 7, a boomerang; 8, a snowman; and 9, a tennis racket. To remember your ATM PIN (4298, say), imagine yourself on a sailboat (4), when a swan (2) tries to attack you. You hit it with a tennis racket (9), and it turns into a snowman (8). Try forgetting that image!

14. Rhyme it. Think of words that rhyme with the numbers 1 through 9 (knee for 3, wine for 9, etc.). Then create a story using the rhyming words: A nun (1) in heaven (7) banged her knee (3), and it became sore (4).

Brain Freeze: "The word is on the tip of my tongue."

15. Practice your ABCs. Say you just can't remember the name of that movie. Recite the alphabet (aloud or in your head). When you get to the letter R, it should trigger the name that's escaping you: Ratatouille. This trick works when taking tests too.

Brain Freeze: "I just can't memorize anything anymore!"

16. Read it, type it, say it, hear it. To memorize a speech, toast or test material, read your notes, then type them into the computer. Next, read them aloud and tape-record them. Listen to the recording several times. As you work on memorizing, remember to turn off the TV, unplug your iPod and shut down your computer; you'll retain more.

17. Use color. Give your notes some color with bolded headings and bulleted sections (it's easier to remember a red bullet than running text).

18. Make a map. Imagine an intersection and mentally place a word, fact or number on each street corner.

Christine de Pisan (1365-1430)

Christine de Pisan (circa 1365 - circa 1430) was a French poet and arguably the first female author in Europe to make a living from being a writer.

When she was 24 her husband, Étienne du Castel, died which led to Pisan becoming a writer in order to support her three children. In her works, she attacked the then popular view that women were second class citizens.

Medical Mission Trip to China

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PzlYKPA5giI

I enjoyed the trip very much as I could meet many nice people and I was moved by their kind hearts and their professional skills ( I wish I also worked in the medical field so that I could do more). Nevertheless, all of us came with the same objective, used our time to help the people in needs.

There were altogether 31 persons in the team, four came from the States - Kristen, John, Georgia and Kathryn.

We had Doctors, surgical doctor, general family doctors, dentist, physical therapy, nurses, professional translator....

We visited the local hospitals and clinic center, as well as the schools in towns.

Our work divided into three groups - one was medical team (the doctors helped to see the patients and exchange knowledge with the doctors of local hosptal), the second one was educational team (to give lessons about hygienics, correct postures, sexual knowledge etc) - to educate and prevent illness, and the last one was the body check-up team (checking the primary schoolkids' eye-sight, teeth, weight and height, color blindness, backbones, heart, lung etc) - to identify the condition and needs of the kids.

We worked four full days, the last day the weather was not good and it rained heavily.

Though we were not come from the same work place, most of us cooperated very well and we met the planned schedule.

Thanks for the team members, at night time, they also worked very hard to input the data of the result of the check-up during the day.

Some findings -

1. No running water for the kids' toilets (to wash hands) in the village school.
2. The kids are very skinny and most of them are under weighted P.4 kids are similar to the P.1 kids in the cities.
3. Few kids are fat.
4. Most of the under weighted kids are from the poor families.
5. Many of them have eye-sight and dental problems, as their parents would not take them to have regular check up ( they may not afford it).
6. The people in the village side are very simple and obedient.
7. there are always smiling faces from the kids, I firmly believe that I could not find from the schools in the cities.
8. Always there is the problem of allocation of scarce resources.
9. There are always angels around in our mission group!!

During the trip, we stayed in the Seniors' house, which is a big mansion in front of the mountain, far from the town area (it used to be a school), we ate in the dining room and we had our own private rooms - with lots of mosquitoes; the water was not hot enough and some of the members had cold shower all the time.

Dr Ao also made the time to cook the food for us - delicious food - and last night of the trip, we had barbecue under the cold and rainy night.

I also made the time to ride a bicycle which I had not done for long time. The air was really fresh !!

This is the blog of Yokie who wrote about this trip:

Be a few hours' tourist

Mandarin House
S. Lourenço Church
Fountain Square
S.Paul's Ruins
Mountain Forte
Shopping Chinese Bakeries and Candies

Just came back from the trip, as F is still in town, called her to check her schedule to meet.

She told me her mother-in-law and D would like to spend some more time in HK, thus they are leaving to HK tomorrow ( they are flying back to Canada on Friday).

Therefore, we made the time to see today, and she also tried to finish her program of sightseeing and shopping at the same time.

She said that the whole week rained a lot in Macau, except Friday. Fortunately, today is a fine day, a little bit chilly ( and windy when we were in the Mountain Forte), I can also see the light blue sky, with a little bit of sunshine, which I longed for long time.

As today is Saturday, the streets ( in certain down town area) are full of tourists, as usual.

We first stopped by the Mandarine House. They went to the place the other day, but it is closed during Wednesday and Thursday, thus she wanted to come back to see the house inside.

It is my first time to go in, I am quite amazed that it is a beautiful, spacious and quiet place (one thing I think it is a little bit weird is that it broadcasts soft western classical music, which I think they should find some nice chinese music instead ).

Actually, there were not many visitors, most of them were foreigners, and people from HK. It is quite a big contrast with th S. Paul's Ruins area.

Interesting enough, F met her old friend over there, he is a Macau citizen but would like to take some nice pictures there - sometimes Macau is small, it is easy to meet people in certain places.

As we were in hurry, we could not afford the time to listen to the guide tour, I would definitely go back again, and I believe the whole renovation has not been finished yet. It is worth to spend some time to know this place.

After that, F wanted to buy a coke for D, and the little shop opposite the tourist spot asked for 8 pataces ( the owner didn't put the price and asked the customers to have self-service, only the last minute the customers know the actual price). We concluded that it over-charged a lot, as most of the places charges 5, while supermarket sells only 3.5 - This should not be the way of doing business for this little shop, we were a little bit disappointed.

Along the road to the other places, everywhere is full of people, we were not quite used to it.

F understood why I told her I would like to stay home on weekends, because the streets are for the visitors.

At the end of afternoon, they needed to buy some cookies and candies back to Canada, we stopped by two shops - the most famous two, while they are always situated nearby or opposite the street.

Personally, I can't distinguish any great difference of the food from these two shops, but one shop has made a lot of advertising, and it successfully attracted many tourists to buy.

As one observes what kind of things the tourists carry in the down town area, it is easy to conclude which bakery shop is more famous.

It ended up that F bought in the crowded shop and D bought in another shop, which is less crowded and it accepts credit card!!

Song -《

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTF6mmN_a4o&feature=channel

Song -【足印】

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mozxy81BYg
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mozxy81BYg&feature=related

憶當天的那段舊夢,祂仿似與我夜裡共行;
沙灘中的每段道路,編出你與我兩雙足印;
漫漫路無論多少崎嶇,都有基督緊握我手;

祂當天親身的應許,祂必會與我伴結前行;
一生中的每段道路,都必會帶領我經過;

每次我心中多悲傷,祂怎卻遠去剩我獨行;
每次我感到是寂寞,祂怎卻遠去剩我孤單;
默默地在我身邊的主,跟我低聲輕輕說出;

Lyrics - "Footprints In The Sand"

You walked with me
Footprints in the sand
And helped me understand
Where I’m going
You walked with me
When I was all alone
With so much I no along the way
Then I heard you say

I promise you
I’m always there
When your heart is filled with sorrow and despair
I’ll carry you
When you need a friend
You’ll find my footprints in the sand

I see my life
Flash across the sky
So many times have I
Been so afraid ooh
And just when I
Have thought I’ve lost my way

You give me strength to carry on
That’s when I heard you say

I promise you
I’m always there
When your heart is filled with sorrow and despair
I’ll carry you
When you need a friend
You’ll find my footprints in the sand

When I’m weary
Well I no you’ll be there
And I can feel you
When you say

I promise you
I’m always there
When your heart is full of sadness and despair
I’ll carry you
When you need a friend
You’ll find my footprints in the sand x 2

Song - Unreserved Love

http://www.esnips.com/doc/8c9b9811-8d07-4fd7-9c7e-1bce0057195a/Unreserved--Love
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7POUv0w7-U&feature=related

I've always been told love won't survive,
Promises will turn into lies,
The world just thinks love comes and passes through,
It never lasts pure and true.

But I still believe love can last,
It's your unfailing love that gives me rest,
You were there when I needed you most,
I'll never walk all alone.

On the cross you died and took away my curse/sin,
Love so wondrous no one ever could deserve,
Your bleeding hands proved your love unreserved,
You're my greatest joy and treasure on the earth.

Make my life a fragrant offering I pray,
Help me Lord to serve you truly every day,
Through tears and joy I'll give you all my praise,
Let the whole world know your love and grace.

Song -

Movie - The Proposal

Watched this movie of Sandra last year, funny and romance movie!

When high-powered book editor Margaret faces deportation to her native Canada, the quick-thinking exec declares that she's actually engaged to her unsuspecting put-upon assistant Andrew, who she's tormented for years. He agrees to participate in the charade, but with a few conditions of his own. The unlikely couple heads to Alaska to meet his quirky family and the always-in-control city girl finds herself in one comedic fish-out-of-water situation after another. With an impromptu wedding in the works and an immigration official on their tails, Margaret and Andrew reluctantly vow to stick to the plan despite the precarious consequences.

Old Streets

By the time we were browsing around in the down town area, there were plenty of tourists everywhere, it was really difficult to get the way to walk.

We walked up to the S. Paul 's Ruins, and decided to get away of the crowds, then we chose the quite lane to walk down to the direction of Rua de Cinco de Outubro.

F and D immediately discovered the difference of the crowded place and the old streets of Macau.

It is quite true, it is the lively neighbourhood of the shops in the fountain area attracts the people - the eating places, the cosmetic shops, the sport wear boutiques, the watch shops, drug stores, the traditional Chinese bakery shops, the banks, the money exchanges, the shoes shops, boutiques etc.

For the old streets, the shops only sell the traditional Chinese tea, dry sea-food, coconuts, peanuts, old fashion clothing, china ware.... it is totally different segmentations. I believe that the rent for these two regions differ a lot too!!!

However, like some of the other tourists, we also discovered that the consturction of the two floors tea shop ( in Rua de Cinco de Outubro) attracts few tourists' attention - it is really quite unique and tourists would like to take the pictures of the shop too.

Though Macau is changing, we should also pay attention of some of the old buildings around, as there are still some buildings worth to conserve, otherwise, all of them, including our memories will gone!!!

Lou Kau Mansion

Passed by the mansion many times, and also visited it for few times. But I never got the chance to listen for the general introduction provided by the tour guide.

This afternoon by the time we were in the mansion, F wanted to listen for the explanation, thus we waited about 15 minutes for the next session started.

There were a lot of history in the house, it was built in about 121 years ago, the design of the mansion combined the western and the oriental styles, as well as there were a lot of craft work and the application of physics theories.

F also told me that when she was small, she went to see her doctor who lived in this mansion too. That was her memory.

Over all, the lady Mr. Chau explained very well, and I think I learned more than the previous time. Interesting details of the mansion, she suggested to visit the Mandarin House too, and I think I will, I am just need to take some time to.

Lou Kau Mansion
Address
No.7, Travessa da Se
Opening Hours
09:00 to 17:00 Closed on Monday
Price
Free admission

Built in 1889, during the Qing dynasty, Lou Kau Mansion in Travessa da Se No.7, an alley off Senado Square was the former residence of the Lou Kau family until 1910. The grey two-storey brick house is one of the very few xinguan-style mansions still standing in Macau, and a prime example of the mixed Chinese and Western architectural styles unique to Macau. The oyster shell windows, hanging scrolls, plaster molding and brick carvings are commonly found in the central Guangdong Province. But false ceilings, stained glass Manzhou windows and cast iron railings are Western characteristics.

On the ground floor, there are two courtyards separating three main halls on the ground level, the Entrance Hall, Tea Hall and Senior Hall which is reserved for more senior members of the family. Despite the fact a lot of time and money was spent on workmanship, the Lou Kau Mansion actually fell into disrepair in the 1970s with up to 20 families living in it at one point in time. In July 2002, the Cultural Institute of the Macao SAR restored Lou Kau Mansion to its original glory and it is now open to the public with regular exhibitions of Chinese arts and free guided tours.

Lou Ka, a businessman made a fortune through his money exchange business Bou Hong Bank, was heavily involved in philanthropy, launching schools, rebuilding ancestral temples and selling rice to the public at a low prices. He was knighted by the King of Portugal in 1890 and also has a street in Macau – Lou Kau Street – named after him.

Tea - San Lei Cafe

F came back for vacation, this is the first time she took her husband and mother-in-law to her homeland.

They finished the family visit in China last week, and are in town for the coming few days before going to HK.

We met this afternoon, browsing around in the down town area, and definitely eating around of the delicious food - D falls in love with the Portuguese egg tart of Margaret Bakery, he has tried it the day before.

As we were in the nearby, we had tea in San Lei Cafe, exactly next to Margaret Bakery. We had the beef noodle and the fired fish crispy, D bought 4 pieces of egg tarts - he needed to queue up to wait for the tarts, while we almost finished our noodles.

He was a little bit surprised that F and I could finished the noodles as well as his egg-tarts, and F explained that we two are big eater!!!

It has been long time to eat with my buddy - F - we used to hanging around when we were teenagers, then she ended up to settle down in Victoria.

She insisted to treat me, and I can't resist, but I really feel that I should be the host, I hope I can treat her well by the time I finish my trip from China.

The business of the shop was quite good, it was full of customers. After the tea, we visited the Lou Kou Mansion.

The Fall of the Pagoda(《雷峰塔》)正式全球發行。

Song -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYFVfchIlek&feature=related

Amazing Grace How Sweet The Sound
That Saved A Wretch Like Me

Howard Schultz

n A Lei Básica

My favourite magnets

http://hk.news.yahoo.com/article/100414/4/hi92.html

1. If you love something, set it free. If it comes back to you, it is yours. If it does not, it was never meant to be.

2. Find time to smell the roses.

3. Friends are the family we choose for ourselves.

4. By chance we are sisters, by choice we are friends.

5. Money isn't everything, but it keeps you in touch with the kids.
