有所思，乃在大海南。

何用問遺君？雙珠瑱，用玉紹繚之。

聞君有他心，拉雜摧燒之。

摧燒之，當風揚其灰。

從今以往，勿復相思！

相思與君絕。

雞鳴狗吠，兄嫂當知之。

妃呼豨！

秋風肅肅晨風颸，東方須臾高知之。

English literary translation

My beloved dwells far south across the sea.

What gift shall I send to honour thee?

Ear studs with paired pearls, bound with jade threads fine.

When I learn your heart is no longer mine,

I smash and burn this gift with furious hand.

Burn it, and scatter ashes to the wind.

From this day on, no longing shall remain.

Our tender love and yearning end in vain.

When dogs bark and roosters crow,

My kin shall know our tale of woe.

Alas!

Autumn winds sigh, morning breezes race.

Soon dawn shall rise, and all the truth find place.
