Wisdom from a Fruit Vendor

Went to the wet market to buy food this morning.

Saw one of the vendors tried to identify the less quality oranges and separated them from the same box. Obviously, she tried to distinguish the oranges into two types.

For me, all the oranges are in same price, as they came from the same wholesale and in the same box.

This vendor tried to charge higher price for the good quality oranges, the premium may be a compensation to cover the other oranges which turned bad before going to the customers.

Suddenly, I remember the practice of other fruit vendor, I used to buy from him in the early morning.

I realise that he has his wisdom in doing his business.

Early in the morning, at around 8AM, there are plenty of oranges, at this time, the price is the most expensive during the day. Many people would choose and buy the best ones.

By doing so, the vendor needs not to divide the oranges into categories. The customers have already done so!

As time passes, at 10 or 11 AM, he starts to lower the price a little bit, e.g., instead of MOP10 for 4 pieces, he would change the price to MOP11 for 5 pieces.

For sure, after the selection of the previous customers, the oranges in the boxes may be smaller or the outlook may not be as good as the sold ones.

Until noon, he would group the oranges - no matter how they are in bad shape or less attractive, each group may be MOP10 for 5 pieces.

He would sometimes said that I only got the cost, as I earned from the early morning.

Every hour, he is trying to monitor his products, by adjusting the prices, he can finish his work by noon time. He needs not to worry about the stock over night, and he can guarantee the freshness fruit every morning.

As he has been selling for long time, he has plenty of customers, and all the customers know well that his price is fixed in certain hour, no negotiation at all, but one can choose the time to buy, according to the quality of the fruit and the price!!
