English Education

Today is the International Children Day, after breakfast, we go to the primary school to audit classes. First one we have Math class for fourth grade, the subject is finding unknown number, the basic for algebra. The kids are very active to participate for the exercises that the teacher gives in class. It makes me remember my math class on 5th grade, the teacher was very fierce, and she called for kids to go out to do math problem on the board, the pressure was very high, and I was scared of her a lot.

The second class is Chinese Literature and the lesson talks about playing chess.

From the two lessons, we can see how the teachers in villages teach. Then, the headmaster tells us that we can have experimental classes to teach English to the kids, as they don’t have English teachers, and the kids did not have the chance to learn. From the class schedule, we can learn that children only have two subjects to learn : Math and Chinese Literature.

As a result, in the afternoon, we start to give lessons to the kids. We have two classes, which I teach the primary 6 students, I start from teaching them some basic vocabularies, and I find out that they have forgotten some words that they should have learned before, and also, it is very difficult to teach for a big class.

After the class, before our dinner, we pay a home visit to one of the students. Her family is poor, but she likes to study, however, she has been very sick , and suspended to go to school for one year. She is now 13 years, and in fourth grade.

I didn’t know her much, but it turned out that she was one of my students later.

After dinner, one team member gives computer lessons to the farmers, obviously it is quite different to teach adults, especially they are farmers, for IT classes. As a result, I was thinking that if we can let the kids or the teenagers to learn, the result may be better, they can also use Internet.

During the time, I talk with VP, who is a university student in China, he also came from a village family, and he said that he is quite familiar with the life in village, but his parents do not expect him to go back to village, after the university education. We talk about the differences on different regions’ villages, and his expectation after graduation, he said that he hopes to get a civil servant job, and in order to have a stable and good pay salary.

About the difference between the villages and his home village, VP said that the land in NMJ is not very fertilized, as one acre can only grow 300 catty wheal, while in Shangton, in general, one acre can get 1000 catty. As a result, Shangton villages in general, they have TV, telephone, and the gap between rich and poor is not very obvious. On the other hand, it is very obvious that in NMJ, majority are very poor. We are quite happy that we can have hot shower in the house of our village head, and also the toilet!

In the afternoon, while we are very busy on checking the books, the kids are very interested to come over to borrow books, it is very obvious that there are not many public facilities for the villagers, the kids are very curious to learn, they want to read books very much. It was told that the whole village, there are altogether 35 people received university education, however, all of them chose to live in city.
